Experience the Wonders of the Universe at the Dakota Nights Astronomy Festival!

Theodore Roosevelt National Park welcomes the return of the Dakota Nights Astronomy Festival on August 14 and 15, offering two days of celestial exploration and hands-on science for all ages. This annual event invites visitors to discover the mysteries of the cosmos through interactive activities, expert-led presentations, and unforgettable stargazing sessions.

Festivities begin at 2 p.m. each day at the South Unit Visitor Center lawn. As darkness falls, volunteers will guide visitors in observing some of the night sky’s most breathtaking sights through telescopes at Peaceful Valley Ranch. Stargazing sessions run from 8:45 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. both nights. To preserve night vision, white-light flashlights are prohibited.

“The Dakota Nights Astronomy Festival presents an opportunity to experience and learn about Theodore Roosevelt National Park in a different light, after dark,” said Acting Chief of Interpretation Kenny Points.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park is fee free July 3 through 5 in celebration of America turning 250! Come drive the South Unit scenic loop and view bison, prairie dogs, and wild horses. Several special events are taking a place throughout the park Including the Second day of Badlands and Bridles at Peaceful Valley Ranch from 9:00am to 4:00pm. As a part of their yearlong travel, The Bureau of Land Management Wild Horse and Burro 250th Anniversary Ambassador Team, Freedom and Liberty, will be in attendance and ready to meet the public.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park has reopened the areas surrounding the Painted Canyon Overlook. This includes the Painted Canyon Visitor Center, parking area, comfort station, Painted Canyon Trail, and Painted Canyon Nature Trail. Regular interpretive programing out of that area has resumed. This includes the park lands starting at the intersection of Pacific Ave and East River Road, Medora and continuing on East River Road until it crosses Highway 94. Park areas surrounding the entrance to the South Unit, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, will be closed to the public from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday July 1, 2026. The closure will include park lands starting at the intersection of Pacific Ave and East River Road, Medora and continue on East River Road until it crosses Highway 94. The closure will include the South Unit Visitor Center and Parking Lot, and all park lands to the east and west of East River Road until the highway crossing. Celebrate America’s 250th in the cradle of conservation! This week at Theodore Roosevelt National Park you can take a hike along the rim of Painted Canyon, get a guided tour of the Visitor Center Museum, or view the foundation of Theodore Roosevelt’s cabin in the Elkhorn Ranch Unit of the park. Theodore Roosevelt National Park will host Badlands & Bridles: Public Lands Horse Use and Management on July 2–3, 2026, a two-day public program highlighting the history, science, management of horses on America’s public lands. The event will take place at Peaceful Valley Ranch from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days and will feature a full schedule of presentations, live demonstrations, and educational activities for visitors of all ages.
