For Julien Hosmalin’s short film “Girls”, part of the preparation focused entirely on rebuilding the location in 3D before the shoot.

Unable to attend the technical scout, I reconstructed a section of the neighborhood using Google Maps references, modeled the environment in SketchUp, then imported it into Capture for previs. This digital workflow allowed us to explore angles, volumes and light positioning within a precise virtual version of the set.

The 3D visualization became more than a technical tool. It helped the whole team project themselves into the mood of the scene and align on the visual direction early in the process. It also proved extremely practical for organizing and distributing tasks clearly once on location.

This is a great example of a morning sunrise timelapse effect that gaffer @theofernandez.l shared with us.

For the sunrise they used an Arri M40 with ¼ CTO, bounced into a 12ft Blue/Beige Bluffbounce and a 4ft mirror with Full CTO.

For the interior night scene segment they used a Skypanel X21 bounced into 6ft Ultrabounce + 1 Astera Pluto with Projection Lens & Gobo as the key and 1 Skypanel bounced into the ceiling for fill. Behind the camera they had 12ft solid for negative fill.

“No cherry picker allowed.” Fine. So how do you light a tiny bedroom when there’s no room for a light in it? Key with a Godox F800R flex mat pinned flat to the wall. Everything else from outside - Nanlux Evoke 5000B with Parallel Beam reflector punching into a CLRS C100 rigged at 6.3m on a Longjohn with extension, bouncing back through the window. Gaffer @theofernandez.l shares his experience with the Godox KNOWLED F800R – from the IP54 weather protection to the inflatable softbox he’s hooked on.

"I’ve used it on several commercials, in studio, on location, and outdoors. The IP54 rating makes it reliable even in Belgian winter conditions

The inflatable softbox is honestly one of my favorite features. It’s faster to set up than a traditional softbox, which really helps when moving quickly. When I need more punch, I still switch to a classic softbox, so having both options depending on the scene is ideal."

Gaffer @theofernandez.l takes us behind the scenes of several commercial shoots—whether in the studio, on location, or outdoors. The F800R proves reliable across a wide range of conditions.

"I’ve always loved using a 4x4’ diffusion frame with a grid for medium and close-up shots, mainly to shape a soft fill or round off a key. The F800R gives me a very similar result, but all on a single stand, which is a big win on set.

It’s also become my go-to toplight, for both products and talent. Big enough to stay soft, without needing heavy rigging.

The dimming from 0 to 1% is very smooth, which allows for clean and controlled light fades in my DMX cue-based workflow.

Night exterior, gas station. Lighting breakdown by gaffer @theofernandez.l

For Julien Hosmalin’s short film “Girls”, one sequence required transforming a remote, abandoned gas station into a dark, stylized night universe.

With no practical street lighting and no possibility of working from height, the approach relied entirely on ground-based units integrated into the environment itself, shaping a controlled and cinematic atmosphere.

Astera Titan, Hyperion, Helios, AX9, AX10 and Creamsource Vortex8 fixtures became part of the set design, programmed across two DMX universes and controlled via Blackout Console.

⚡️Recent work from gaffer @theofernandez.l and cinematographer @vincentgroen_ ⚡️

BTS from an interior scene, first floor setup ☀️🎬

For the window, I used an @nanlux_official Evoke 600C with the Parallel Beam accessory bounced into a mirror to shape a clean, punchy sunlight ray. Two Skypanel X21s were added to build a cooler ambient outside.

Inside, a soft booklight setup with Skypanel X21 into an Ultrabounce Floppy, full diffusion and Snapgrid, giving a very smooth and controlled wrap on talent.

I also used an Evoke 150C with a Projection Attachment to create a precise floor bounce and lift the scene subtly from below.

For contrast and shape, solid black on the ceiling plus two floppies to keep the light tight and sculpted. by @theofernandez.l
