Doing things a bit backwards. Made my boss show me how he 'trims' and 'fixes' a coat. So initially making sure there is enough lining and fabric before cutting out the different components ready for an eager maker. Should have really learned this a bit earlier in my quest for knowledge. Realised that I was spending too much time doing the usual things that I already know because of the busy period we went through. Now that things have slowed down I intend to learn a new feature or technique a week. This week is the Turn Back Cuff. I love this detail on a coat. It's been a funny old day. Was being my usual careful self with a job but somehow managed to nick the forepart quite close to pocket. Renders it unsalvageable. I was distraught. Velvet has hands down been my nemesis fabric. Hard to manipulate, stretch shrink or machine sew as it moves a lot. One trick (courtesy of one of the old guys) is sewing velvet with newspaper underneath and then ripping the paper off after. Doubted it initially but it worked. Boss had cataract surgery on his left eye today and came straight to the shop afterwards. Madness. He was under strict orders, from yours truly, not do any work. But just before leaving he gave me some instructions on how to make a kidney piece for a coat. Just had to have the last word didn't he? Been given a bundle for a Naval uniform coat. Very much new territory for me so also looking at a sample (on right) and cross checking with the different piece I have to mark stitch. Preparing a fitting is going to be interesting. Doubt i'll get to work on the finish but will be interesting to watch :). #savilerow #bespoketailoring #menswear #apprentice by @theoldapprentice
