A quick and not very good shot taken before sunrise but important for today’s newsletter.

I was in a friend’s wedding and while giving back borrowed jewelry, a sterling silver feather, one of the bridesmaids said, “This is yours. It symbolizes hope.” It stuck with me. On the way to the hospital a few weeks ago, this is what I saw in the sky, something that looked remarkably like hope. by @theone_chiv

MIDDAY MARAUDERS
Spent the day with a gorgeous human bopping around the city. It’s been a while since I just wandered with someone, walking arm and arm, snapping photos of signs, people, artwork, and food. Was great to have you back for this city jaunt, @blairbrienza .

Saw a great show on Saturday with new and old friends. It’s a compelling story with singers whose voices physically resonated in my body with their power. Theater always reminds me that art is essential in any circumstance, especially in uncertain times. We need to connect with our humanity, with stories, be moved by music, and have a bit of hope.

60th book of the year completed!! 🎉🎉🎉

It’s the most I’ve ever read in my life and I’m so proud of myself. Audiobooks are a huge help but I’ve built stamina with paperbacks. I used to fall asleep 10 pages in. Looking forward to finishing the rest of the books in the Easy Rawlins novels and my growing TBR list. by @theone_chiv

Might get back into photography for the new year. More looking outward, less rumination on the inside.

Went to see the powerhouse Mohini Dey at National Sawdust last Saturday. I don’t think anyone plays like her, she’s is versatile to a level that you have to see live to believe. My baby just picked up the bass and now has a role model for discipline and commitment to an instrument.

The next day, inspired by Mohini’s artistry, I committed to mine by doing some story edits. Still have to record the audio but I completed one step. We live in a mad world and all we can do is support and create art, support and create some beautiful space amidst emotional wreckage.

More to come. We #outandabout this summer.

Went to see Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal in Othello on Broadway. It confirms to me once again that Shakespeare is meant to be seen performed, not read in a stale classroom. Jake was phenomenal. Denzel is and always will be a legend. Each cast member wore their role like a glove. The crowd gasped at points in the play even though we knew what would happen. It’s was that good. I was that engrossed. Wish I could go back.

I was only able to see Emilia, played by Kimber Elayne Sprawl up close. She shone toward the latter part of the play and I got her autograph.

I rounded out with dinner at Oscar Wilde, then power walked to make the train home. What a day.

The saga continues with my #outandabout summer. 😘 taken in New York City by @theone_chiv

First time at the #rootspicnic2025 and the reports you heard from the first day were true. It was a mass. A downpour flooded the venue and made it unsafe. Lots of people gave up and left. By the time I got in, the day was a wash. 🥁

But the second day was much better. I saw Clipse, Total, The Roots, Total, CeeLo Green, Lenny Kravitz, and Kaytranada. There were a ton of great food trucks, folks were friendly and courteous, performances were great, and I left satisfied. I going to leave out the complaints and just say I had fun. taken in Highmark Mann Center for the Performing Arts by @theone_chiv
