Released on April 18, 2025, “WRK” is a single by American rapper JID that serves as the lead track and worldbuilding start for his fourth studio album, God Does Like Ugly.

The song functions as a deep double entendre: on the surface, it masquerades with a bouncy, high-energy rhythm, while lyrically acting as a gritty mission statement about the relentless hustle, personal sacrifices, and emotional toll required to chase artistic greatness. Through intricate wordplay—such as weaving driving and automotive metaphors with historical nods to the Civil Rights Movement and Interstate 85—JID reflects on the dark mental spaces following his acclaimed album The Forever Story. He uses a subtle, hidden 1948 prison work song sample (“Early in the Morning”) to tie his personal ambition to generational themes of forced labor, survival, and creating beauty out of hardship.

JID, born Destin Choice Route on October 31, 1989, is a critically acclaimed American rapper, singer, and songwriter from East Atlanta, Georgia. Initially pursuing a career in football at Hampton University, he shifted his focus full-time to music, co-founding the musical collective Spillage Village in 2010 and later forming the Zoink Gang. His rapid-fire delivery, versatile vocal dexterity, and intricate wordplay caught the attention of J. Cole, who signed him to his Dreamville Records imprint in 2017. Since his major-label signing, JID has solidified his status as a prominent figure in modern hip-hop through highly praised studio albums like The Never Story (2017), DiCaprio 2 (2018), and The Forever Story (2022), alongside commercial crossover hits like “Enemy” with Imagine Dragons
