Shinin’ times with the @greenriverboys at the first gathering of the new season. The group focused on Firestarting and Cooking Over the Fire, dusting off those flint and steel skills and learning about cooking out of our packs with boilers and small pans. Waugh!

Like many of you, I am a backpack connoisseur.

I have owned many backpacks that were “the pack” only to be usurped by the next pack. Sometimes you finally get something just the way you want only to have it replaced by something else.

In this instance, I had the fantastic @thehiddenwoodsmen EDC Rucksack in a configuration I really liked. Like other backpacks that have come and gone, this one didn’t last long as my primary EDC pack….

This post is an homage to the final setup of that pack before it too left my hands.

My youngest needed a new backpack for the school year, and since his big brother already uses a @thehiddenwoodsmen backpack - I had to pass this one along, too.

There’s always the next bag….

I woke up late on September 11, 2001.

I was still in my first few years of real job life as a web developer in Austin and was rarely on time.

Ironically, it was my mom that called and told me about the first plane hitting the Twin Towers in New York.

I turned on the TV and was glued to the images that I saw.

I grew up in the 80s when Red Dawn was considered a possible reality, so my first thoughts were naturally that this was the start of an invasion.

I grabbed my bugout bag - a Lowe Alpine Kangal Himal pack I had used as a backpacking guide in college - as well as my rifle - a post-ban Olympic Arms AR-15, and staged them both by the door.

I am not sure where I thought I would go, but at the time I was still hunting on a friend of my dad‘s ranch near Three Rivers, Texas so I think that was probably where I planned on heading.

When the second tower was hit, I saw it live on TV.

I never did bug out that day.

Around 2 PM I realized that I had forgotten to call into work and let them know where I was. I don’t think they cared.

I don’t think anybody was thinking about work that day.

Having seen, lived in, and grown-up in the world before 9-11, it’s impossible to explain gigantic culture shift that took place in the United States that day…. taken in New York City by @theorionfoundation
