For decades, Americans were told that fat was the dietary villain behind heart disease. But the history of that advice is more complicated than it looks.

In the 1950s and 1960s, scientists were already debating whether sugar, saturated fat, cholesterol, or some combination of dietary factors contributed to coronary heart disease. One prominent researcher, John Yudkin, had been arguing since the late 1950s that sugar deserved much more attention.

Then, in 1965, the Sugar Research Foundation, a trade organization representing the sugar industry, approved a project to review the evidence on sugar, fat and heart disease. The project was conducted by researchers at Harvard's School of Public Health.

The researchers were paid by the Sugar Research Foundation. Internal documents later showed that the organization helped set the project's objectives, supplied scientific papers to the researchers and received drafts of the review before publication. Yet the industry's funding and involvement were not disclosed in the published paper.

The resulting review was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1967. It concluded that there was no doubt that the dietary intervention needed to prevent coronary heart disease was to reduce cholesterol and replace saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat. Evidence implicating sucrose was treated much more skeptically.

Nearly five decades later, researcher Cristin Kearns discovered correspondence and other industry documents that revealed how the project had been funded and managed. In 2016, Kearns and colleagues published their analysis in JAMA Internal Medicine after examining hundreds of pages of historical records. by @theoryorb

A woman says she spotted a whole family of Loch Ness Monsters on Google Earth 👀

Julie Fraser was planning a trip to Inverness and just messing around on the map when she noticed three strange waves in the water. She posted them to The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register, and now everyone's talking.

Her take is that they don't look like boats. Moving ships leave a V shape in the water, and she doesn't see one here. She says they look more like whales with an arc to their backs.

Could it be a little Nessie family? Honestly, I want it to be 🐉

Have you ever heard of a weapon called the “Voice of God”?
It's a military technology designed to make you hear voices inside your head.
It was apparently used in Iraq to create confusion and chaos among enemy forces.
The idea was to use electromagnetic energy to send sounds directly toward a person, potentially making them hear something that isn’t actually there.
And here’s the creepy part…
There’s actually a patent for technology involving this concept, Patent No. 4,877,027.
But what I actually want to know is who have they tested it on? by @theoryorb
