Chilly turns 8 today, so naturally his morning consisted of making his rounds around Nyack and collecting birthday treats.

He started the morning visiting friends at Deli on the Hudson for his 🥓 and 🍳, hit the Nyack Farmers Market, to check out his buddies at Rosina Winery’s @rosinas_winery booth, checked in at The Local @thelocalnyack, got his lottery tickets at @koblins_pharmacy_nyack and somehow managed to get a treat pretty much everywhere he went.

And if you know Chilly, you know he didn’t exactly rush through any of it.

He is perfectly happy taking his time, saying hello to everyone and waiting patiently until someone realizes that the birthday boy probably needs another snack.

Eight years of this little guy being one of the coolest, sweetest and most laid back dogs around.

Twenty-five years later, I still find it hard to put this day into words.

On September 11th, I lost six people I grew up with. Friends who were part of my life long before that morning, who shared a piece of my childhood and knew me back then.

I wish they were still here. I wish we had another twenty-five years of memories together.

Until one month before the attacks, I had been working down there for a dot com company. Through that work, I became friends with another twenty + data center engineers whose companies were in the two towers.

Over the next eight years, I went to wakes, memorials and tributes, saying goodbye and remembering friends I never imagined losing.

That grief also includes others who spent days, weeks and months taking part in the rescue and then recovery efforts. People who gave so much of themselves in the aftermath. They are part of who I remember, too.

When I look at these names, I see people I grew up with and friendships I made along the way. It is still hard to comprehend how many people I knew and cared about were taken that day, and how far the loss reached in the years that followed.

I’m sharing every name because every person on this list meant something to someone.

My friends are among them, and I know so many of you have someone here, too.

To my friends, I miss you. I wish we had more time.
