It’s approaching Te Araroa trail season so I thought I’d share this #tbt video of @ali_wandering and I walking above Lake Hawea in New Zealand 🇳🇿 We took sabbaticals from work and walked the 1300km South Island part of the trail between Jan-March 2018.

If you’re looking for a challenge and a stunningly beautiful thru-hike, I’d absolutely recommend the Te Araroa trail!

The whole route is 3000km long from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island.
It takes about 4-5months to complete the whole thing or 2-3 months to do the South Island.

You camp or stay in backcountry huts along the way and pass through some of New Zealand’s most remote and wild areas.

@teararoanztrail has lots more photos of the trail for inspiration!

I know @adventurer.nic and @jamesmichaelforrest are going to be tackling it soon - let me know if you’re thinking about it too!

Happy to pass on my packing list or any other info that helped me plan my trip and answer any questions about the trail 😀 🥾⛰ .

A very surreal, lovely day at my publishers @vertebrate_publishing signing pre-order copies of my book The Outdoors Fix which is out on 9 March!📚

It was so lovely to meet some of the brilliant Vertebrate Publishing team at their office and I brought cake - so hopefully I passed the test!🤞🏻

Thank you to every single person who has bought a copy so far for themselves or as a gift for a friend. Your support means such a lot! 💚

There’s still time to pre-order a book and be in with a chance of winning some fantastic outdoors shoes kindly gifted by @merrelleu - the link is in my bio.

The whole aim of the stories and tips in the book is to try and get more people outside and feeling the power of the outdoors - so here’s to all your future outdoor adventures! 🌳🥾☀️

You don’t have to be “outdoorsy” to belong outdoors 🏔️

A few of my favourite quotes from my conversation with Francesca Donovan @francescaoutdoors for The Outdoors Fix podcast 🎧

Francesca grew up in an “indoorsy” family and spent her early 20s at gigs. She didn’t think she belonged in the outdoors world. Now she’s the online editor of The Great Outdoors magazine @tgomagazine !

I walked with her to Windgather Rocks in the Peak District to talk about discovering the hills in her mid-20s, what the outdoors has (and hasn’t) done for her self-esteem, and what it’s like behind the scenes at the magazine.

In this week’s Substack post, you can:

🌿 Follow our walking route to Windgather Rocks
🌿 Read Francesca’s tips for pitching your own outdoors story
🌿 Get the full tidied transcript of our conversation

Hope you enjoy it!

Sunday walking club with friends ❤️ 7 miles around the whole of Hampstead Heath 🍂🥾☀️☔️ Cup filled up. by @theoutdoorsfix

Some of my favourite quotes from Tree Hunting author Paul Wood @thestreettree on our walk through Richmond Park for an episode of The Outdoors Fix.

Paul spent four years finding a thousand remarkable trees in Britain and Ireland’s towns and cities, and he’ll make you look up the next time you’re out!

In this week’s field guide post on The Outdoors Fix Substack, you can:

🌳 Discover our walking route to the 700—800-year-old Royal Oak in Richmond Park
🌳 Read Paul’s tips for finding and identifying trees near you
🌳 Get the full transcript of our conversation

Little moments that have lifted me this Autumn 🍂

None of them fixed anything, but each one gave me a bit of breathing space.

If you’re finding things hard at the moment, I hope you can find one small moment like this for yourself this week 💚

Some of my favourite quotes from my conversation with Emily and Lucy from @softgirlswhohike 🌿

This one is particularly resonating with me at the moment: “When you’re out in nature, nature doesn’t judge you. You don’t have to put a mask on — you just get to be who you want to be.”💚

In the latest post on The Outdoors Fix Substack: The route of our public transport friendly 7-mile walk to Dove Stone Reservoir, Emily and Lucy’s story, and their tips for a soft hike 🥾

Hope you enjoy it and that it transports you into the outdoors for a few minutes - perhaps it will spark some soft hiking adventure ideas!

Ever liked the sound of a bothy adventure and thought, ‘I’d love to do that, but I wouldn’t know where to start’?

Juls Stodel @over_stepping walked to all 104 UK bothies run by the Mountain Bothies Association in 15 months — and told me exactly how to plan your own bothy trip 🥾🌳

You can read more about our conversation, as well as discover the route we walked together to Will’s Bothy in the Scottish Borders, in my latest post on The Outdoors Fix Substack. The link’s in the bio 👆

Dartmoor at the start of Autumn 🍂 Circular walk from South Zeal up Cosdon Hill. It was wet, but heavenly 🌳❤️ by @theoutdoorsfix

🌿Max Swinhoe hid her arm for 30 years. Now a qualified mountain leader and mountain rescue volunteer, Max wants to increase the visibility of disability in the outdoors.

‘When I come here, I can feel my heart rate decrease’

These are just three moments from my conversation with outdoors instructor Carla Khouri @carlarunsonplants as we walked through Dagnam Park in east London for our podcast recording 🎧🥾

If you missed this episode when it came out, Carla’s story is one of changing direction, helping others discover the outdoors, and finding purpose in nature. It was a real privilege to hear it while walking through one of her favourite local green spaces🌳

If you’d like to read more about Carla’s journey and see a map of the walking route we took together in Dagnam Park - so you can go on your own adventure there! - you’ll find it all in my latest Substack.

The link’s in my bio.

Where’s the place that makes your heart rate slow down? 🌿
