Trailer for PROOF OF LIFE, a new concept from @thepackworld

Proof of Life asserts that the true Washington, D.C., the D.C. forged by generations of African Americans, is still here, alive and fighting, even as the city’s native communities are held hostage by rapid redevelopment and cultural erasure.

Over the last six months we interviewed seven members of the D.C. community to not only show that we’re still here, but to look at how Chocolate City motivated their ambitions.

After a year of work, we’re excited to share this project.

🎁 The Made in DC Booth (#59) is located along F Street NW between 7th & 9th Streets — right at the Gallery Place–Chinatown Metro (7th Street entrance).

This year, we’re featured in the Made in DC booth among 20 resident-owned, DC-based local businesses.

We’re nearing two years of being your local newsroom, and The 51st team is ready to party!

We’d like to invite you to our two-year anniversary celebration on Thursday, October 8 at 6 p.m., hosted and sponsored by @urbangardenbrewing — a Black-woman, D.C.-native-owned brewery that opened in Shaw this summer.

This shindig will also serve as a release party for our first-ever print edition! We’re partnering with @thepack.world to produce a physical spread of local D.C. news — something our readers have been asking for and we, quite frankly, don’t see enough of these days.

Unfortunately, we have been told by law enforcement at 8PM that we cannot continue with tonight’s party - which was a genuine shock and disappointment to us as we have been in constant communication with MPD throughout the week. Several MPD officers looked me in the face and assured that this event would be okay to move forward, and they were actually going to send resources to ensure that it was a safe event tonight

In our conversations this week, the notion of cancelling was not brought up until an hour ago, despite being in constant communication.

We are committed to curating and maintaining spaces for our people to get together safely and continue the traditions we enjoyed growing up. The city clearly had other plans. ‘

All pre-sale tickets will be refunded and we will figure out a path forward - you all have shown us for nearly a decade that you all are riding with us and we are committed to doing the same with you. Thank you again to all of our supporters, vendors, and live acts that were part of this event.

The key to a great party is safety!

When chatting about the history of The Pack Party, many interviewees discussed the fact that it has consistently been a safe event where attendees can also be their authentic selves.

This juxtaposition does not always exist when attending certain vents in D.C.

Maintaining our reputation for safety is very important, so we share this as a reminder to those returning, and a message to any first timers… respect the space, respect your peers, lookout for each other and leave the bullshit at home! This is not that.
