“I’ve never heard of that paint brand.”

Every painter will hear this at some point.

Customers naturally feel comfortable with names they recognize. But as professionals, we have the opportunity to introduce them to products and systems they may not be familiar with—and confidently explain why we believe they’re a good fit for their project.

That confidence comes from doing the homework. Read the TDS. Understand the product. Know the application. And stand behind the work you deliver.

This series is about helping painters expand their product knowledge, communicate with customers more confidently, and make informed recommendations—whether it’s a brand they’ve trusted for years or one they’re just discovering.

Keep the products you trust. Never stop discovering new ones.

Educational content only. Product selection and performance depend on the specific application and conditions. Always review current manufacturer specifications and determine suitability for each project. #thepaintindustry #painters #contractors #think #fyp by @thepaintindustry

💰 Profit Per Project #001 | The $25 Decision
I’ve always believed that contractors should give multiple paint manufacturers the opportunity to earn their business.
Recently, I saw the owner of Paint Tigers out of Texas mention that they give every paint manufacturer the opportunity to bid on their paint business each year.
I smiled because it reinforced something I’ve believed for a long time.
Why do you think they do that?
This post isn’t about telling you to switch brands. It’s about challenging yourself to think like a business owner.
In this example, saving $25 per 5-gallon bucket could add up to thousands of dollars over the course of a year.
And that’s just one product.
Now imagine evaluating your primers, enamels, caulking, tape, plastic, paper, roller covers, brushes, spray tips, and other sundries.
Those savings can add up to thousands of dollars that can be reinvested back into your business.
The goal isn’t to buy the cheapest paint. The goal is to maximize value, reduce unnecessary costs, and build a stronger, more profitable painting business.
I’m curious—do you give multiple manufacturers the opportunity to earn your business each year, or do you stick with one supplier? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

💼 Who should you talk to at Home Depot?

Most painters know the Pro Desk, but many don’t realize there’s an entire support team available to help contractors.

Whether you’re ordering paint, building a large material package, or bidding a commercial project, knowing who to contact can save time, improve project coordination, and potentially lower material costs.

This support team may include:
✅ Pro Desk Associates
✅ PASAs (Pro Account Sales Associates)
✅ BEHR PRO Representatives (where available)
✅ Pittsburgh Paints In-Store Managers (where available)

💡 Paint Industry Insider Tip:
If you’re working on a large project or placing a high-dollar order, ask to speak with the PASA. They specialize in supporting professional contractors with large quotes, volume pricing requests, material packages, and commercial purchasing. Getting them involved early can make the purchasing process much smoother.

The more you understand the resources available, the better positioned you’ll be to run a more efficient and profitable business.

👇 Have you worked with a PASA before? What was your experience?
