When a Batman title hits issue #100 you don't just print another issue — you assemble everybody. 🔲🦇

Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #100. November 1997. Alex Ross painted cover. 68 pages for $3.95. Two full stories and a gallery of full-page illustrations that reads like a hall of fame of comics art.

Dennis O'Neil takes Dick Grayson back to the night his parents died — exploring in greater detail the events that led to Batman's choice to bring a young boy into a life of vigilante justice. Dave Taylor draws it with the weight that story deserves. Then James Robinson and Lee Weeks deliver a quiet, devastating backup about Batman and Jason Todd — the Robin who didn't make it.

Then the gallery hits. Frank Miller. Mike Mignola. J.H. Williams III. Walt Simonson. Joe Quesada. Curt Swan. George Pratt. Gene Ha. Every one of them with a full page Batman. Every one of them bringing their own visual language to the same character. That's not a pin-up section — that's a masterclass in how many different ways one icon can exist on a page.

Legends of the Dark Knight ran from 1989 to 2007 and gave creators complete freedom to tell out-of-continuity Batman stories in any era, any tone, any genre.

Batman and the Outsiders #1. August 1983. Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo. "Wars Ended...Wars Begun." Batman heads to war-torn Markovia to find Lucius Fox — and the JLA won't sanction the mission. So Bruce Wayne resigns on the spot. Walks out of the Justice League and builds something new.

Black Lightning. Metamorpho. Katana. Geo-Force. Halo. Not the A-listers. Not the household names. A team of outsiders — heroes operating on the margins of the DC Universe — hand-picked by a Batman who was done asking for permission.

Jim Aparo draws the entire Justice League in this issue and he is one of the most underrated draftsmen of any era of comics. His Batman is immaculate but seeing the full JLA assembled under his pencils is something special. Then Batman walks away from all of it and the book gets truly interesting.

This is the run that introduced Katana to the DC Universe. The run that gave Black Lightning a team. Mike W. Barr focused hard on character and secrets — making the new heroes as compelling as the icons standing next to them.

Finally!! This was supposed to come last week but arrived right on time for #ncbd.

And good thing, because Absolute Green Arrow is not slowing down. 🏹🔲

Dinah is hunting the Green Arrow Killer while tracking down Roy Harper — Oliver Queen's protégé. But Harper's trail takes her somewhere darker and more twisted than anything she's walked into yet.

The balance of action, exposition, and flashback is surgical — the time jumps keep you completely off balance without ever feeling forced. Pichetshote opens with a flashback to Dinah's days as a fighter, snaps back to the present, then rewinds two days for an action sequence where the Green Arrow Killer walks into a trap — fully prepared for it.

And then this issue drops Absolute Solomon Grundy. A body full of eyes. Born on a Wednesday.

DC confirmed on the same day this issue dropped that Absolute Green Arrow has been extended from six issues to twelve. That's not a consolation extension. That's DC seeing something special and making room for it to breathe.

Three issues in. This is one of the best book in the Absolute Universe. Pull list locked. 🏹🟩

"My name is Wally West. Today I am twenty years old." That's the first line of dialogue. 🔲⚡

Flash #1. 1987. Mike Baron and Jackson Guice. The first issue of the series with Wally West as the new Flash. Barry Allen died in Crisis on Infinite Earths saving the universe and left a 20-year-old kid to carry his name into a DC Universe that had just been completely rebuilt from scratch.

Wally's Titan teammates throw him a surprise birthday party to open the issue. As eager as he is to correct anyone who mistakenly calls him Kid Flash, he's still processing Barry's death. Crisis may have faded from the horizon but Wally hasn't moved on. Then the phone rings. A woman needs a heart transplant in Seattle. Snowstorm has the roads shut down. The Flash is the only one who can get it there in time.

No grand villain. No world-ending threat. Just a young man who inherited the impossible responsibility of being the fastest person alive — on his birthday — and showed up anyway. That's who Wally West is from page one. 🔲

And by the end of the issue Vandal Savage has entered the picture. Because Wally West never gets a day off. Not in 1987. Not ever. ⚡

The MCU just gave us Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Comics did it first.

Infamous Iron Man #1. October 2016. Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. Tony Stark falls and Victor Von Doom picks up the armor — not as a joke, not as a trick, not as a Doom scheme with a hidden agenda. As a genuine attempt at redemption.
Bendis wrote Doom as a man who looked at everything he had built through fear and conquest and decided he wanted to be remembered differently.

Maria Hill doesn't believe him. Mephisto doesn't believe him. The Maker doesn't believe him. Nobody believes him, and Doom keeps showing up anyway.

Alex Maleev drew this book like a noir film. Cold light. Heavy shadows. A Latverian dictator walking the streets of New York in Iron Man's armor and somehow making it feel inevitable rather than absurd.

The whole series asks one question — can the most irredeemable man in Marvel history actually change? Bendis doesn't give you an easy answer. Doom doesn't ask for your forgiveness. He just shows up and does the work.

If you've been sleeping on this run — the Doomsday trailer just gave you every reason to wake up.

The Avengers Doomsday trailer just dropped and Doctor Doom is controlling Sentinels. 🤯

While everyone is online losing their mind — go read Avengers: The Children's Crusade. 2010. Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung. Nine issues that put Doctor Doom at the center of an Avengers story and showed exactly what happens when a man of Doom's intelligence and ego gets his hands on power that was never meant for him.

The Scarlet Witch returns. The Avengers and X-Men are at war over her fate. And Victor Von Doom — watching from a distance — sees his moment and takes it. He absorbs the Life Force entity and becomes a god. Not a villain playing at power. An actual god. And the Avengers can do nothing but watch.

Jim Cheung drew every page like a prestige film. Heinberg wrote Doom not as a cackling tyrant but as the most dangerous thing imaginable — a man who genuinely believes he deserves the power he takes.

Robert Downey Jr's Doom says "one day you will forgive me" in the trailer. That's not a villain line. That's a Doom line. Comics been telling you who he is for decades.

1961. Jazz clubs. Skinny ties. Beatniks. And Gotham City with a completely different set of rules. 🎷🎺🦇

Thrillkiller is a DC Elseworlds three-issue miniseries from 1997 written by Howard Chaykin and painted by Dan Brereton. Bruce Wayne is not Batman. He's a detective for the GCPD — broke, after the Wayne family lost their fortune, working cases from the inside of a corrupt police force that doesn't want him solving anything.

Batgirl and Robin are the heroes. Barbara Gordon — a bored heiress — and Dick Grayson — a free-spirited circus daredevil — become costumed vigilantes on the rooftops of Gotham purely for the thrill of it. Until Dick's family is murdered and mischief becomes something much darker. 🔲

And the Joker? The Joker is a woman. Bianca Steeplechase — a ruthless femme fatale and the White Queen of Gotham's criminal underworld — running the city's corruption from the shadows while Batman and the police chase their tails.

Dan Brereton painted every page of this book. Not pencils and inks — fully painted. The result is a Gotham that feels like a film noir directed by someone who grew up on jazz records and pulp fiction. Dark, decadent, and completely its own thing.

All three issues from the collection. Earth-37. The Batman story most people have never read.

Gene Colan was 71 years old and still the best person alive to draw a vampire. 🧛🏿

Blade #1, March 1998. Christopher Golden sends Eric Brooks to New Orleans — the one American city that earns a vampire story without trying. The bayou. The jazz clubs. The heat. Deacon Frost operating in a city built on superstition and shadow.

Golden writes Blade as a man carrying something heavier than wooden stakes and garlic. A half-vampire who belongs fully to neither world — not human enough to rest, not vampire enough to stop fighting. New Orleans is the perfect backdrop for that kind of loneliness.

And Colan draws all of it at 71 with the same instinct for darkness he had when he first put Blade on a page in 1973. The shadows don't just fill panels — they swallow them. Every page feels like midnight even in the daylight scenes.

Forty pages. $3.50. The Daywalker in his city.

Marvel cancelled every X-Men title simultaneously and replaced them all with an alternate reality. No warning. No explanation. Just a different world. ❌️

Age of Apocalypse. Legion — Charles Xavier's own son — traveled back in time to kill Magneto before the X-Men ever formed. He missed. He killed Xavier instead. And in that one moment the entire Marvel Universe split into something darker, harder, and more brutal than anything the X-Men line had ever attempted.

In this world Magneto built the X-Men in Xavier's memory. Apocalypse conquered North America while the rest of the world looked away. Humans were hunted. Mutants were either soldiers or slaves. And the X-Men you knew were replaced by scarred, morally compromised versions of themselves fighting a war with no good ending in sight.

Ten titles cancelled. Ten new books launched in their place. All set in the Age of Apocalypse simultaneously for four months. Blink became a fan favorite overnight. Weapon X was missing a hand. Cyclops had one eye and worked for Apocalypse. The whole thing ran like a machine — every title connecting, every issue mattering, no filler anywhere in the run.

Then Marvel flipped it back, relaunched the original titles, and the Age of Apocalypse was gone as suddenly as it arrived.

The most ambitious X-Men story ever told. And the 90s never got enough credit for pulling it off. 🖤❌️

1991. Baron Von Strucker is secretly alive — and Hydra wants nobody to know it.🐍

Daredevil Annual #7 is part one of The Von Strucker Gambit — a three-part crossover running through the 1991 annuals of Daredevil, Punisher, and Captain America. Strucker sends three elite Hydra assassins after a group of genetically-modified experiments that escaped the organization. The catch — those assassins are expected to go through Daredevil, the Punisher, and Nick Fury to get them.

Mike Mignola did the cover. Butch Guice and Ron Garney handled the interior art. This issue also marks the first appearance of the Crippler — a masochistic Hydra enforcer sent after a mysterious tiger woman with the power to raise the dead.

That's a lot of comic for one annual.

What makes this one special is the era — 1991 Copper Age Marvel at peak form. Annuals that actually mattered. Crossovers that ran through books you were already buying without demanding you buy twenty tie-ins. The Von Strucker Gambit is exactly the kind of tight, three-part spy thriller Marvel used to do effortlessly and doesn't do enough of anymore. 🖤🐍

The Clone Saga asked the most dangerous question in Marvel history — what if Peter Parker isn't the real Spider-Man? 🕷️🔲

Marvel revealed that the Peter Parker who had been swinging around New York for years was actually a clone. The real Peter Parker was Ben Reilly — a man who had been wandering America alone for five years thinking he was the copy.

Ben Reilly put on a new costume and became the Scarlet Spider. Then he became Spider-Man. And Marvel let it run for two years before reversing course and killing Ben off.

Love it or hate it — and fans are still divided — no storyline in Marvel history caused more chaos, more canceled subscriptions, or more debate at the comic shop counter than the Clone Saga.

It was messy. It was ambitious. It went on way too long. But it's never forgotten. 🕷🕷️🔴🔵
