HEY TOOTH NERDS 🦷🤪

My name is Beth and I’m a Dental Technician from the UK 🇬🇧

It’s definitely time for a little re-introduction… so if you’re new here, hiiii 👋🏼 and if you’ve been here a while, thanks for sticking with me 🥹

Here are 10 facts about me so you know who’s behind the teeth 👇🏼

1️⃣ I qualified as a Dental Technician in 2018 and have loved every minute since 🥹

Had a blast at the London Dentistry Show! 🦷✨ @dentistryshowcs

Such a pleasure to share the stage with Matt Everatt and Stephan Avetoom to talk about the future of dental technicians.

All three of us started out as technicians, yet we’ve taken very different paths in our careers. It made for such a fantastic discussion about how we attract new people into the profession, develop those already in it and, most importantly, retain them once we have them.

My first ever speaking gig was actually at the London Dentistry Show a few years ago, so being invited back again was such a lovely full-circle moment for me 🥹

As always, amazing to catch up with so many familiar faces and the people who make these events what they are. Until next time! ✌🏼

I’d love to hear your thoughts on some of the topics we discussed! 👇🏻

🦷 ATTRACTING: Is there enough visibility around dental technology? What more can we do to encourage people to consider it as a career?

🦷 DEVELOPING: Are technicians aware of all the career paths available to them? How can we better support their development and progression as an industry?

🦷 RETAINING: Why are technicians leaving the profession, and what can we do as lab owners, colleagues and industry partners to encourage them to stay?

I’d genuinely love to hear your perspectives, whether you’re a student, technician, lab owner or working elsewhere in the industry! 💬 Let me know in the comments 👇🏻 taken in ExCeL London by @thepartyenamel

How it was done 👇🏼

Backings on teeth or occlusal metal onlays on denture teeth are a NIGHTMARE. You can get them close, but getting everything to fit perfectly can mean a lot of time spent at the bench making adjustments.

Unless you utilise digital 👀

For this case, I designed the teeth digitally and printed a try-in to verify everything before any metalwork was made.

Once we were happy, I sent the files over to @adam_artframe who was able to print a model that actually incorporated the denture teeth. This meant there was no guesswork around where the metal needed to be positioned.

When it came back, the teeth just SLOTTED into place 😍

I cannot tell you how happy that made me 😂 The time spent at the bench making things fit is the bane of my life, so having everything just go together like a little jigsaw puzzle was EVERYTHING.

We saw a problem and experimented until we found a solution. And boy, was it a good one 🙌🏼

But this workflow wouldn’t have been possible without understanding both analogue AND digital dental technology.

It wasn’t about replacing one with the other. It was about combining the two to create a better, more predictable workflow.

When you come across a problem, do you think outside the box and find a better solution? Or do you keep fixing the same problem every time it happens? 👀🦷 taken in The Hive Dental Laboratory by @thepartyenamel

When a lab has a clear workflow in place, everything just runs cleaner.

Everyone in the lab is working in the same way. Clinicians who need guidance are being supported in the same way. Records are being collected consistently. Everyone knows what should happen next.

That doesn’t mean every dentist has to work exactly the same way.

Some clinicians already have really specific workflows, and that’s completely fine if it works, the information is all there and you know exactly what you’re doing when the case lands with you.

The problem is when techs are spending loads of time trying to work out what’s happening, chasing missing information, piecing together random messages or figuring out what the intended outcome even is.

If that keeps happening, build the workflow yourself.

A few things that may help you:

📋 Decide exactly what records you need for each case type

✍🏼 Create standard prescription prompts so nothing important gets missed

📸 Make simple scan, photo and record guides for clinicians

📁 Keep all case information in one agreed place

💬 Decide how changes should be sent and recorded

⚙️ Build SOPs so every technician follows the same process

❓ Create FAQs for the questions clinicians ask repeatedly

🔍 Review problem cases and update the workflow when something keeps going wrong

🧠 Make sure someone new could follow the process without needing to ask what happens next

We did quite a few of these, and it made SUCH a difference.

Less confusion. Less chasing. Less guesswork.

And way more time for technicians to actually focus on the cases in front of them 🦷 taken in The Hive Dental Laboratory by @thepartyenamel

Nothing about this case went the “ideal” way 😅

This one was extra special because it was my gran 🥹 She came down to Bournemouth for some new teeth and put her trust in me and @cdtemily at @hive_dental_clinic

As if treating family wasn’t enough pressure, she gave us a few challenges 😂

🦷 Class II skeletal relationship
📉 Severely reduced OVD
😬 Sunken existing denture
🦷 Pulp exposure on UR1 from abrasion
🤢 Severe gag reflex
📏 Over-erupted teeth and gum recession

We scanned instead of taking impressions because of her gag reflex. Was that ideal for free-end saddles? No. But sometimes the “ideal” workflow isn’t the best workflow for the patient in front of you.

I designed digital try-ins for both arches, allowing us to verify the models, check the occlusion and OVD, and approve the aesthetics all in one stage.

Once verified, @adam_artframe made us two beautiful chrome frameworks and I added the milled teeth before finishing the case. 🙌🏼

The shade threw me a curveball too. C4 looked like A1 in her mouth 🤯 so I had to get creative with Optiglaze 😂

Do I love every part of the outcome? No. It isn’t perfect.

But she wears them. She loves them. And ultimately, that was the goal. 🥹

This is why knowing digital denture workflows is such a benefit to technicians and labs. Not because digital makes every case perfect, but because it gives us more options when things aren’t.

Even when Royal Mail loses your parcel, your digital files mean emergency models can just be printed at the chrome lab 🤣

Huge thank you to @cdtemily, everyone at @hive_dental_laboratory and @adam_artframe for helping me give my gran her new smile. 🦷✨

Definitely #1 on the grandkids list now 🤪 by @thepartyenamel

SEMCD Training ✅

There’s something quite humbling about putting yourself back in a position where you realise just how much you DON’T know 😂 But I think that’s where some of the best growth happens. I’ll happily be the least experienced person in the room if I’m going to leave it better than when I walked in. 🙏🏼🦷

I’ve had the absolute pleasure of spending the last few days at the @mcnallydentaltrainingcentre in Ireland with @paul_mcnallyire, learning the Suction Effective Mandibular Complete Denture (SEMCD) protocols.

We were walked through the complete workflow, with hands-on experience of both the clinical and technical stages, and there were SO many moments where I thought, how are results this good even possible?! 🤯

But learning something and being competent at it are two completely different things.

You cannot expect to attend a course for a few days and suddenly be proficient in a completely new technique. I’ve come away with a huge amount of new knowledge, but now comes the important bit: applying it to real cases, gaining experience, learning from my mistakes, refining my technique and building confidence through repetition.

Ultimately, continued learning has a much bigger purpose than collecting another technique or certificate. It means being able to offer new techniques to the clinicians I work with and continually improving what we can offer our patients. 🥹🦷

It’s genuinely crazy to see how predictable this workflow can be when the protocols are understood and followed properly, and the results that can be achieved. 🔥

Now I cannot WAIT to get stuck into some SEMCD cases, build my experience and start putting everything I’ve learned into practice.

Thank you @paul_mcnallyire and everyone at @mcnallydentaltrainingcentre for such a brilliant few days, and for being so generous with your knowledge and time 🙏🏼

Now… anyone fancy a case collab? I need to practice! 🥹🦷🤣 taken in McNally Denture Clinic by @thepartyenamel

Everyone loves a before and after 🥹

The digital design gives me:

Precision ✅
Accuracy ✅
Reproducibility ✅
Flexibility with the teeth ✅
The ability to work from literally anywhere ✅

Then the finishing gives me:

Character ✅
Creativity ✅
Artistry ✅
Aesthetics ✅
And that little extra ✨wow✨ factor ✅

For me, the best bit is getting to have both. The control of digital, with all the creative bits I love about being a technician 🦷✨

Like Hannah Montana said, it really is the best of both worlds 🎤🪩🤪 taken in The Hive Dental Laboratory by @thepartyenamel

Cases like this really do make me feel like I’m making a difference 🥹🦷

A part of me loves the aesthetics side of my job. Seeing all the creativity I’ve put into a restoration really feeds the artist in me 🎨✨

BUT, big transformation cases like this put things into perspective.

They’re often not pretty, at all 😂 Extraction sites mean bumpy intaglio surfaces, remaining teeth can mean uneven occlusal planes and compromised results. With the amount of teeth coming out, the fit will be good for all of a few days if we’re lucky 🫠

But none of that takes away from the impact.

Because the difference isn’t just physical. It can completely change how someone feels about themselves, how they smile, how they speak, and how they show up in the world 🥹

Sometimes adapting is difficult, but knowing we’ve helped someone through such a huge moment in their life is exactly why I love what we do 🙌🏼

Dentistry isn’t about judgement. It’s about supporting people through their own journeys and, sometimes, giving them their life back ❤️‍🩹

And with digital, I love that you can see exactly where you need to be, while always having those original tooth positions there to refer back to 💻🦷
