SHORT DOCUMENTARY 🎬🎥🐾
A young mountain lion’s odyssey through the North Bay of California
POSTS STORIES REELS
1,500 miles. Five crossings of Highway 101. Even a swim across the Russian River. All in search of somewhere to belong. Puma 36 was a young mountain lion navigating Northern California in search of a territory of his own. His journey took him through forests, farmland, highways, and neighborhoods, revealing just how difficult it can be for wildlife to move through a world increasingly shaped by us. THE PATH OF PUMA-36 follows one extraordinary animal, and the people trying to find a better way to share the landscape with predators. Because we’re not the only ones who live here. P36 might be most famous for crossing a major freeway and entering the densely populated Marin community of Tiburon. Learn about P36's risky journey in the documentary The Path of Puma-36 at our movie night at Martin Griffin Preserve on Saturday, May 23. What was P36 doing in Tiburon in the first place? P36 was a dispersal cat — a young lion trying to stay alive and out of trouble until he is old enough to challenge another male for a home to call his own. Likely, P36 was skirting a resident male mountain lion, which lead to using urban habitat, not ideal for an animal that needs sufficient food and tree cover. If a dispersal cat survives long enough to establish his own territory, his range might cover 150 –250 square miles. Because P36 was part of the Living with Lions study, we could follow his GPS location, see where he began, and chart the arc of his remarkable trajectory. Hear more about P36's story at the movie night and learn about the Living with Lions project. We'll be joined by researchers in the study as well as a special Q &A with The Path of Puma-36 film director Ami Bluestone. This free event will reach capacity. Get your tickets now. The Path of Puma-36 follows the remarkable 1,500-mile journey of P-36, a young mountain lion navigating Northern California’s forests, farmland, highways, and communities. We want to recognize the talented team behind this project for bringing greater visibility to the challenges mountain lions face and helping audiences better understand the importance of coexistence. This documentary highlights the important conservation work of our partners at @truewildconservation and Dr. Quinton Martins, including his work with the Living with Lions Project in collaboration with @allhandsecology. Their research helps us better understand mountain lion movement, behavior, and the challenges these animals face in an increasingly developed landscape. Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue is honored to be part of this film and to contribute to a story that encourages greater awareness and understanding of these remarkable animals. P-36’s journey reminds us that wildlife doesn’t recognize the boundaries we create between wild and developed spaces. Protecting these animals means understanding the landscapes they move through and finding ways to coexist alongside them. 🐾 THE PATH OF PUMA-36 Meet P-36, a young mountain lion from the Bay Area, California who left his mother’s territory at just 18 months old to find land of his own, the same journey every “dispersal cat” has to make with no map and no guarantee of a safe place to land. Swipe through to follow where his path took him ➡️ Over 1,500 miles he crossed Highway 101 six times, swam the Russian River even though mountain lions aren’t built for it, and stayed constantly on the move to avoid rival males whose territories can stretch across 200 square miles. His story is about more than one mountain lion navigating a dangerous world - it’s about what happens as wild space keeps shrinking and animals like P-36 run out of places to go, and it’s about the ranchers, researchers and conservationists working to find a way for humans and wildlife to share the land more sustainably. 🎬 Directed, Produced & Edited by Amelie Bluestone @thepathofpuma36 Produced by Ashton Whitman @ashtonwhitman24 Co-Produced by Leo Frank @leofrankproductions DP Megan Mullen @meganmullenproductions 2nd Unit DP Kaeley Beam @kaeleybeam Location Sound Haley Foster @haleygracecreates Sound Supervisor Matt Michelangelo matthew.michelangelo Composer Jacob Kitchen @jacobinthekitchen Colorist Nissy Davis @nissy.davis Trailer Editor Joshua Zapf @joshua_zapf In association with @allhandsecology @lwl_trailcameraproject @truewildconservation Full film link in bio 🔗 #PathOfPuma36 #MountainLion #WildlifeFilm #Conservation #WildCommons by @thepathofpuma36
