Amid the whirlwind of emotions that come with a cancer diagnosis, the bright spot of my week was finding myself at the iconic Plaza Hotel, surrounded by the most creative, driven, and inspiring people.

I’m thankful to have attended the @fginyc 40th Annual Night of Stars Gala.

It was a night where history and dreams collided — and I couldn’t help but think of my grandmother. Just 20 blocks from the garment district where she spent decades hunched over a sewing machine, she would have been so proud.

My admiration for @fernmallis only continues to grow. Her wisdom, ingenuity, and passion consistently reminds me why I love this industry, and why I believe we can #KeepFashionKind

Fern received the Founders’ Award, presented by MSNBC’s @stephruhle (who is always a firecracker).

Also, a moment for @fernmallis wearing @bibhumohapatra and FGI president + CEO @mgrisz wearing @verdavainneofficial 🙌

Feeling inspired, connected, and grateful.

I can finally officially share this incredible experience of appearing on a segment of the @thedrewbarrymoreshow 🌸 Lovely to see my actual neighbor @zannarassi outside the hood and talking about her @milkmakeup line.

I would trust no one else but the talented @eddiewunderlich to touch my hair for such an important moment!

Thank you, @drewbarrymore for the warm welcome, and thank you @chimowild for the sick jacket. Needless to say, my pre-teen daughter stole all the goodies gifted by Drew + Zanna (see last slide).

The world lost a creative soul who touched so many by adding color and wonder to every room, and to those who crossed the threshold.

In 2017, Gio and I crossed that threshold together. The world demands that autistic children quiet their senses, contain their reactions, and adapt to their surroundings. Yayoi Kusama created a world that invited Gio to do the opposite. He got to experience color, patterns, surrealism, wonderment… And I got to watch him enjoy this. The biggest gift a mama could receive.

That day helped nurture a lasting love of art, an appreciation for the surreal and the unconventional, and a curiosity about artists, cultures, and spaces beyond our imagination.

Yayoi Kusama opened a door for Gio that has remained open ever since. What a beautiful gift Yayoi Kusama gave us that day, and what an extraordinary gift she gave the world.

Rest in peace to an artist who showed us that there is no limit to imagination, beauty or wonder.

Finding stacks of old photos in my mom’s home has been quite the internal journey. It’s given me grace to forgive decisions I regret, give myself more credit than I did in the past, and also surprise myself when a single photo makes me realize where a skill set comes from. My love for event planning runs deeper than I ever realized.

My mother was president of the Mothers’ Guild at my alma mater, Sacred Heart Academy, and every year, she spearheaded a fashion show. She partnered with a high-end boutique on Long Island’s North Shore, pulled dresses, secured the beautiful Milleridge Inn, coordinated vendors and donations, guest list, and managed every detail of the show.

She recruited both students and mothers to model in the show. Women of different ages, sharing the same runway. Looking back, she was an ahead of her time in the way she created an inclusive space for women to feel beautiful and seen. This was the height of the “angel show,” mind you, so imagine what this must have meant to so many of the models and women in the audience. See those freshmen sitting on the floor looking up at me walking? I wonder how this may have impacted them.

At the time, I didn’t fully appreciate what went into making it all happen. I just remember my mom on the phone, working through logistics, pulling everything together, and somehow making it look effortless.

And then there was me. 🙈 An awkward teenager who felt weird about being slightly taller than my peers, didn’t feel as conventionally beautiful as the *many* blonde girls in my all-girls high school, my hair was too wild, and I never gave myself credit for my talents and skills. But somewhere between the fittings and stepping onto that runway, I started to see myself differently. I can even see my posture in this photo speaking volumes. I was home. In my comfort zone. I can still feel how soft that silk dress was.

And to this day, you’ll find me in my zone when I’m talking about fashion, or organizing a monster of an event. It just feels right. Thank you, mom. I love you.
