Conservation is a key result our work. Each of our ecosystems is home to imperiled biodiversity that faces extinction without restoration. We conserve these species by protecting and expanding their habitat, ensuring they survive and thrive for generations to come.

Restoration is the driving force of our mission. We restore endangered ecosystems globally for the people who depend on them and the conservation of biodiversity. Our strategies are varied, from direct planting to increasing native seed availability to social enterprise programs, but they all bring ecosystems back from the brink.

Collaboration is the backbone of the work we do. Restoring endangered ecosystems, supporting communities, and conserving biodiversity depend on people working together. We collaborate with a diverse group of individuals, organizations, and government agencies to ensure our efforts are effective, efficient, and equitable.

Plains? Great ✅
Seeds? Collected ✅

Our first Great Plains seed collection mission of 2026 was a resounding success, with 37 species collected across Ft. Pierre National Grassland and central South Dakota! We're expanding operations and forging new partnerships with federal, state, tribal, and private organizations this year, all to restore this endangered grassland ecosystem. Keep an eye out for more details soon!

Happy #WildflowerWednesday! 🌼 Orchid Edition ✅

Meet Cynorkis cinnabarina, a flower without a common name! This species is quite rare and is mostly found in higher altitude grassland and shrubland in Madagascar. We're lucky enough to have this flower in Ivohiboro, where it grows in the quartzite gravel at the top of the mountain. Though it isn't the showiest orchid, we think Cynorkis cinnabarina is elegant in its own right. 💅

What's your favorite orchid species?

It's another #FaunaFriday! 🐿This week, we're talking all things Black-tailed Prairie Dog.

This adorable ground squirrel is an infamous critter that inhabits grasslands from southern Canada to Mexico, including in our restoration sites in central South Dakota!

Prairie Dogs live in family groups called "coterie," burrowing far underground and creating a dome-shaped mound at the entrances. Though these mounds just look like piles of dirt, they actually prevent burrows from flooding during the heavy rains that are a feature of the Great Plains' dramatic weather systems. What's more, these raised entrances also serve as effective predator viewing points, but to maintain their views, Prairie Dogs must constantly graze the vegetation surrounding their burrows. This grazing promotes diverse, nutritious forage for many herbivores (including Bison 🦬), while their burrows provide homes for many other wildlife species, including Burrowing Owls, Swift Foxes, and snakes 🐍. Black-tailed Prairie Dogs play a vital role in the Great Plains ecosystem, so don't mistake their adorable demeanor for ineffectiveness!

Have you ever seen a Prairie Dog before?

It's #WildflowerWednesday! 🌼

This week, we're showcasing the Hawaiian Poppy (Argemone glauca). Hawaiian Poppies are native perennials on all the Hawaiian Islands. This flower has the unique ability to grow rapidly in disturbed and polluted areas, making it a particularly stable native species. Its pungent taste also deters grazers, so it can provide a natural barrier for protecting more sensitive plants. Overall, this poppy is an important member of the native Hawaiian ecosystem and continues to set an example of strength and longevity!
