One of my go-to combinations is using the left jab to disguise my left roundhouse kick to the head.

The jab draws your opponent’s attention upstairs while your footwork sets up the kick. The key is making both attacks look the same until it’s too late to react.

It’s not just about speed. It’s about timing, positioning, and deception.

Make them react to the jab. Make them pay attention to the kick. 👊

Blocking a strike is only the beginning.

In this drill, we’re working on absorbing the initial attack, using our hips to generate power, swimming the arm to clear the line, and immediately countering with strikes and knees.

The key is making every movement purposeful. Defense and offense should flow together, not become two separate actions.

Train to respond, not just react. 👊🥋

There’s a lot more to Kyokushin than standing toe to toe and trading strikes.

At The Phoenix Way, we’re not training for tournaments. We’re training for real-world self-defense.

That means understanding distance, controlling balance, using sweeps and takedowns, and knowing what to do when a confrontation doesn’t stay standing.

Our roots are traditional Kyokushin. Our approach is practical, functional, and constantly evolving.

🥋👊

What does Kyokushin really mean?

Kancho Dan Soller shares a powerful perspective on the meaning of Ultimate Truth.

Kyokushin is about much more than physical toughness. It’s about having the courage to look in the mirror, recognize your strengths, acknowledge your weaknesses, and be honest with yourself.

That honesty is where growth begins.

The deeper you go into your training, the more you realize the greatest lessons aren’t always about fighting. They’re about understanding yourself.

Osu! 👊🥋

🥊 The heavy bag doesn’t lie.

Too many people approach the heavy bag thinking it’s just about hitting harder.

But the bag is one of the best teachers you’ll ever have, if you know what to look for.

Are you striking with the correct part of your hand or shin? Are you maintaining your balance? Are your hands returning to position? Are you controlling your distance?

Every strike gives you feedback.

Once you find your rhythm, start changing things. Work on timing, tempo, movement, and accuracy. Make the bag swing. Adjust your distance. Challenge yourself.

Don’t just hit the bag. Learn from it.

That’s when hitting a heavy bag becomes training with purpose. 👊

No one has it all figured out. And the moment you think you do, you stop growing.

After more than 40 years in martial arts, one thing I’ve learned is that there’s always something more to understand, something to improve, and something someone else can teach you.

Stay curious. Stay humble. Never stop learning.

The hands set up the kicks, but it’s the footwork that creates the opportunity.

Dai Sempai Ryan and Sensei Derek working a combination drill, using their hands to create openings for powerful head kicks.

Watch closely as they change angles, get off the line, and fire the kick back upstairs.

Think of Mike Tyson slipping hard off the centerline and exploding back with an uppercut. Same principle, different weapon.

It’s not just about throwing combinations. It’s about creating openings, changing angles, and attacking from a position your opponent isn’t expecting.

Distance creates opportunity. Angles create openings. 🥋🔥

You can’t fight at 100% power the entire time. But you can’t win a fight without knowing when to use it, either.

The key is setting up your power with smooth, controlled combinations. Create openings, find your distance, and then commit with explosive power when the opportunity presents itself.

Not every strike needs to be a knockout shot. But when it’s time to deliver power, you need to be able to turn it on.

Control sets it up. Timing creates the opening. Power finishes it.

Kyokushin was never meant to be limited to tournament rules.

I specialize in stand-up striking. It’s my passion and what I’ve dedicated over 40 years to studying and teaching.

But Kyokushin is so much more than punches and kicks. Trapping, grabbing, sweeps, takedowns, and close-range fighting are all part of the art.

In this clip from my conversation with Patric Pinto on the Kumite 360 podcast, we discuss the importance of understanding and applying these techniques.

Respect the tradition. Continue the evolution.

Families that train together, stay together! 🥋

I’ve been saying that for years, and I believe it more today than ever.

In this video, I sit down with Sempai Taylor to talk about what it means to train alongside your family.

Martial arts is about so much more than punches, kicks, and self-defense. It’s about building relationships, creating memories, overcoming challenges, and growing stronger together.

When parents and children share the mats, they’re building something that goes far beyond the dojo. They’re building a bond that can last a lifetime.

At The Phoenix Way, we don’t just build better martial artists. We build stronger people and stronger families.

Osu! 🔥
