A little surreal to finally share this.

I’m honored to be featured in the latest issue of @pilatesstylemagazine guest edited by my friend @chazknightpilates with not one, but two articles:
“David Keith and The Power of Precision” and “Entering the World of TZR.”

These pieces represent so much more than my own story. They reflect the philosophy that’s shaped my teaching, the countless mentors and lineages that continue to influence my work, and the vision behind building @tzr.studio into a space where precision, curiosity, and exceptional movement education can coexist.

I hope this piece encourages more conversations about where our industry is headed, why the details matter, and how honoring the depth of this method allows us to better serve every body that walks through our doors.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey, studied with and alongside me, challenged my thinking, and trusted me with your movement.

This is only the beginning. 🖤

The labels might help market a studio or signal an identity, but they don’t make the work new.

Mr. Pilates already created a method. He called it Contrology.

And the deeper I study across the lineages, the more obvious something becomes:

Progression was always part of the work.

Different teachers had different language, priorities, apparatus, and ways of bringing a body into an exercise.

But none of the lineages I’ve actively studied taught me that progression meant simply repeating the final exercise until the body eventually figured it out.

Repetition matters.

But repetition without understanding is not progression.

And I think that’s where some of the confusion in Pilates today begins.

A teacher encounters a progression, variation, or different application of the system and assumes it must be “contemporary” simply because they were never taught it.

Or an old idea gets repackaged with new language and suddenly we’re told we’re looking at a revolutionary new approach to Pilates. 👀

New to you does not mean new to the method.

Before we rebrand the work, maybe we should study more of it.

Understand what an exercise is building.
Understand what prepares the body for it.
Understand how the apparatus can assist, organize, resist, or challenge.
Understand when repetition creates refinement and when it simply rehearses the same compensation.

Because progression is not abandoning the method. Progression is part of the method.

I’m not interested in inventing another category of Pilates.

I’m interested in understanding Contrology deeply enough to make thoughtful decisions within it.

Pilates doesn’t need another adjective. It needs teachers willing to keep studying the noun. ⚡️

XOXO,
🦄

Somewhere along the way, Pilates history became flattened into camps, labels, and rigid ideas of ownership. But when you actually study the history of Contrology, a different story emerges.

The Elders were constantly cross-pollinating. Assisting each other. Teaching in each other’s studios. Sharing ideas. Evolving the work differently based on the bodies in front of them while still honoring the depth of what Mr. Pilates created.

The method has never lived in a single interpretation. It lives in the overlap.

Lineage Lovers was created as a space dedicated to the history of Contrology through the lens of the lineages themselves.

Quotes from the elders. Rare stories and firsthand experiences. Signature repertoire. POV posts. Historical discussions. The nuance, contradictions, evolution, and humanity behind the work.

Not to prove whose lineage is “right.”
But to better understand the people who carried the method forward and why they taught the way they did.

Welcome to Lineage Lovers 🖤 by @thepilatesunicorn

There’s something we want you to know about us.

The three of us aren’t just the people behind TZR. We’re the people in the room with you. Teaching, learning, listening, and paying attention to the little things that make all the difference.

We know our members. We care about their progress. We notice when something clicks, when someone gets stronger, when they start carrying themselves a little differently.

And none of that is accidental.

We built TZR because we believed there was room for something more personal. A place where the quality of movement matters just as much as the people doing it. Where you’re never just another body in a packed room.

We don’t take it lightly when someone chooses to spend an hour of their day with us. That’s time, trust, and energy we feel responsible for honoring.

So this anniversary, we wanted to extend that same care to the people who haven’t experienced us yet.

Because we can tell you how much we care, but we’d much rather show you ✨

A little reunion with a body of work that has always felt like home. 🖤

I’m so grateful to my longtime teacher @cprpilates for the opportunity to take part in the Heritage Training Reunion and return to Kathy Grant’s work as Cara received it, understood it, and has continued to carry it forward through her own lens.

From the moment I began my deep dive into this lineage, Kathy’s work has always felt like a home base for me.

It has met me differently in every season of my life as a student and as a Pilates teacher. And maybe that is what made this weekend feel so special. I was returning to familiar material, but I wasn’t returning as the same person.

The work stayed constant. I didn’t.

My body has changed. My eye has changed. The questions I ask have changed. The way I understand and teach this work has changed.

There is something deeply reaffirming about realizing that growth doesn’t always mean moving away from where you started. Sometimes it means returning to the same place and discovering how much more you’re able to see.

I’m endlessly grateful to Cara and to every teacher I’ve studied with in this lineage who has generously shared their perspective of the work Kathy left behind.

So many different lenses. And somehow, they all keep leading me home.

XOXO, 🦄

A few snapshots from a weekend that covered a LOT more than could ever fit into one reel. 🖤

These are just pieces of the repertoire we explored, the conversations we had, and the lightbulb moments when something suddenly made more sense in someone’s body.

I said it before, but I’ll say it again: WERK THE WUNDA was never about collecting more exercises. It was about learning how to look at the work more critically.

And in an industry where Instagram has become one of our biggest sources of continuing education, maybe one of the most important questions is:

How do we decide whether a variation we see online actually has value?

Because there is incredible work being shared here but there is also SO MUCH noise.

Part of becoming a stronger teacher is developing the discernment to tell the difference. To look beyond whether something is impressive, creative, or simply new to you and ask:

Does it have intention?
Does it teach something?
Does it clarify the work?
Does it belong in the larger conversation of the method?

Those are the conversations I love having with teachers.

This was my final open, in-person workshop at TZR for 2026, but I’m already getting my 2027 teaching schedule together, and there are some VERY exciting things taking shape.

More soon. 👀

And I have a feeling the Tower might need its turn next…

As I head into one year of owning @tzr.studio , I keep thinking about the responsibility that comes with teaching this work, especially when you teach the people who are going to teach it next.

The industry is more saturated than ever.

More studios. More instructors. More certifications. More “methods.” More content. And somehow, not always more substance.

We’re in a moment where beautiful spaces can open before there is a clear teaching philosophy behind them. Where someone can learn a sequence before they understand a system. Where choreography can masquerade as education, and CONFIDENCE can travel much faster than COMPETENCE.

I don’t say that because I think Pilates needs to be gatekept.

I think it needs to be taught better.

Over the past year, I’ve been thinking deeply about what it actually means to introduce Contrology in a group setting. Not how to recreate a private session in a group, but how to let people move together without losing individuality, intention, or the method itself.

How do we teach people to understand their bodies?

How do we give teachers enough structure to lead confidently without teaching them to hide behind a sequence?

That is the program I’m beginning to build, because group Pilates isn’t going anywhere.

And I don’t think the answer is spending our time arguing about what is and isn’t “real Pilates.”

The question I’m much more interested in is:

How do we make it better?

I don’t want to build the studio that is having a moment. I want to build the studio that still matters when the moment changes.

That doesn’t mean rejecting what people want from Pilates right now. Give them the beautiful space. Give them the music. Give them a workout. Make them sweat. Challenge them. Let the experience feel current.

But underneath all of it, there should still be something to learn.
Something to practice.
Something to return to.

Because trends can get someone through the door.
Substance gives them somewhere to go.

I don’t think I’ll ever take for granted that instructors choose to spend their weekends with me, whether they’re in my studio or logging in from the other side of the world.

WERK THE WUNDA was never just about learning more Chair exercises. It was about sharing the work that has been shared with me: the repertoire, ideas, details, stories, corrections, and approaches that often go far beyond what traditional training programs have time to cover.

It was also about honoring the lineages that have shaped this work and the teachers who have carried it forward, preserved it, expanded it, and made it their own.

Every time I teach one of these intensives, I’m reminded that I’m one small link in a much bigger chain. I’m sharing variations that were taught to me, along with variations I’ve developed through studying, practicing, and being inspired by what came before me.

My goal as an educator is to study this work deeply, understand and honor its roots, and continue passing it forward with intention while making space for thoughtful exploration and personal expression.

To share this collection of repertoire, ideas, and variations with 40 instructors around the world is something I’m incredibly grateful for.

I can only hope I’m making my teachers, and their teachers, proud. 🖤

Thank you to every teacher who spent their weekend with me, for asking questions, experimenting, laughing, struggling, finding something new, and bringing your own perspective to the work.

My point of view is my own, but the deeper I go, the more I realize just how much there still is to learn and it’s such a privilege to keep learning it together.

XOXO,
🦄

Tabletop isn’t just about getting your hips UP. 👀

The goal is hip extension, and ironically, that’s the piece I see people miss the most.

There has to be an energetic reach FORWARD through the thighs as the hips open.

Miss that relationship and it’s really easy to shift backward, dump weight into the arms, hang from the shoulders, and start looking for more and more extension through the spine instead.

And suddenly Tabletop starts looking a whole lot more like a backbend without ever truly finding the hip extension to support it.

This flipped Chair setup is one of my favorite ways to build endurance and understanding of where the exercise should go.

The backboard limits how far you can travel backward, giving you a chance to organize the forward reach of the thighs, the opening of the hips, and the support of the shoulders before taking it back to the traditional setup.

Give it a try and let me know what you think! 💭

“Students should learn one new thing in each class because humans are motivated by challenge.”

@ineliagarcia shared this quote from Romana with me, and I keep coming back to it when I think about teaching groups.

Challenge doesn’t always mean harder exercises, bigger ranges, or more impressive choreography.

Sometimes it means getting more specific about something the body already knows. 👀

That’s a huge part of why you’ll see me “create” variations of the traditional work.

I’m asking: What does the ideal require, and where are the bodies in front of me losing clarity?

Then I can change the setup, support, resistance, or relationship to the apparatus to give them another way into the same idea.

“Tree off the Footbar” does exactly that.

Instead of progressing the choreography, we’re progressing the understanding of it.

Can we articulate away from the leg while maintaining space between the thorax and pelvis and creating opposition between the leg reaching away and the spine articulating back?

Because when that organization gets lost and the leg becomes something to leverage off of, you’ll often see it in the carriage: keep traveling backward and eventually you’re jammed up against the shoulder blocks.

The apparatus tells on you. 😂

Build the strength.
Find the opposition.
Clarify the initiation.
Then take that information back to the ideal.

Especially in groups, I think we can feel pressure to constantly give people something NEW.

But novelty and challenge aren’t the same thing.

Maybe the “one new thing” isn’t another exercise.

Maybe it’s a new understanding of the work they already know. 👀⚡️

Just because Teaser is labeled “Intermediate” doesn’t mean Teaser is an intermediate skill. 👀

On the Reformer, you’re asking the body to coordinate A LOT of moving parts at once: the carriage, the straps, the legs, the spine, the arms… all while maintaining the organization that actually makes it a Teaser.

So instead of repeatedly practicing the final exercise and hoping it gets better (which most often it doesn’t 🫪), I like to ask:

What skills does the final exercise require, and where can I teach those skills more successfully?

This building block on the Long Box using the @balanced_body Wall Tower gives the student an opportunity to find the shape, timing, opposition, and control of Teaser with a little more support and a lot less chaos.

Then we can build and eventually, those skills make their way back onto the Reformer, even in a group setting.

Give the body what it needs to succeed before asking it to perform, and suddenly the exercise feels a whole lot less impossible. ⚡️

Try this one and let me know what you notice. 💭

I almost didn’t post this because my bar was crooked. 👀

Not wildly crooked. But crooked enough for me to notice, and honestly, crooked enough for anyone with a decent set of eyes to notice too. 😬

This variation on the Reformer with the Long Box + dowel was inspired by the @fletcher.pilates “Strip Teaser” on the Spine Corrector, and when I watched the video back, I could see my slight scoliosis reveal itself in the extension.

My first thought?

I should refilm it.

After years of practicing and teaching, I’ve gotten pretty good at organizing my body in ways that can make some of those asymmetries less visible, at least on camera or to an untrained eye.

But this time, I decided to leave it.

Because the bar might be a little crooked, but the piece still demonstrates exactly what I wanted it to demonstrate.

And somewhere between analyzing the exercise and picking apart my own execution, I had to remind myself of something I probably need to say more often:

Pilates was never supposed to be the pursuit of a “perfect” body performing perfect shapes.

It’s a journey toward greater control of your body, and control doesn’t mean symmetry at all costs.

It means awareness.
It means organization.
It means understanding what your body is doing and continuing to refine what it’s capable of.

My journey toward full-body control is going to look different from yours because the body I’m working with is different from yours.

Even as a teacher.
Even after years of practice.
Even when I understand exactly what I’m trying to create.

I’m still a student.

My body is still teaching me.
My practice is still evolving.

And sometimes the crooked bar is the lesson. 👀

Maybe mastery isn’t becoming so “perfect” that nobody can see what you’re still working on.

Maybe it’s developing enough awareness, control, curiosity, and humility to see it yourself and keep working anyway.

XOXO,
🦄
