Mentorship matters. šŸ’—

Our Founder and CEO, @natalieplain, recently welcomed mothers from @generationher to the Billion Dollar Beauty headquarters for a tour and an inspiring business seminar.

Generation Her is a nonprofit organization founded by @dianna_smiley, dedicated to empowering young mothers ages 13–25 through life-skills education, parenting support, mentorship, and community.

We’re proud to support Generation Her’s mission and are so grateful for the opportunity to connect with such an inspiring group of women. 🩷

I had a passion. I had a vision. But I didn’t know a thing about the chemistry.

So I did what I always do, I got to work.

I sourced three laboratories across Southern California. And then I found Rose.

Rose transformed my life. She sat with me through Los Angeles summers, through winter and spring, through afternoon after afternoon of testing formulas, opening and closing componentry, applying product, refining every single detail until it was exactly as promised.

We sourced our ingredients from France. We tested until it performed. We made sure it could be thrown in a purse, a luggage bag, or the center console of your car and still close securely every single time.

That attention to detail is what took us from one product to one hundred.

Rose didn’t just help me build a formula. She helped me understand how I wanted this brand to show up in the world.
And that standard lives in every lip, brow, cheek, and body product we make today.

That’s the Billion Dollar Promise.

Happy Birthday, America.

When I was in College I had the privilege of interning in the Clinton Administration. At the time, it was a dream come true.

Writing on behalf of the President and the First Lady, learning from some of the best, and understanding what it truly means to serve something bigger than yourself.

That experience shaped who I am as a leader and as a founder. And today, celebrating 250 years, I feel that more than ever.

Billion Dollar Beauty is a women-owned company. And it would not exist without this country. Without the dreamers, the believers, and the visionaries who came before us and made it possible.

Two hundred and fifty years. Here’s to every single one of them.

God Bless America.šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡²

It’s All Good PR

In the great words of Madonna, there’s no such thing as bad PR.

In the early 2000’s. Extra with Mario Lopez was everywhere. So, when they came knocking, we immediately said yes.

Ten thousand dollars to be front and center at The Grove with a crowd behind me and Mario himself holding up our product.

We gave away product to every single person in that audience. And then...

Not one sale.

But here’s the thing. That footage opened the door to a Hollywood gifting suite. That gifting suite gave us a photo with Paris Hilton. That one photo got us on Rachael Ray. Rachael Ray crashed our website.

Every door led to the next one.

PR isn’t always dollar for dollar. Sometimes the ROI lives in the footage, the photos, the press kit line that opens a room you never expected.

When you look at it as an ecosystem, it’s all good PR.

$10,000. Mario Lopez. National television.
Zero sales.

And somehow… one of the most valuable things that ever happened to our brand.

Everyone loves to talk about the PR moments that explode overnight. But no one talks about the ones that don’t go according to plan.

The truth? Not every opportunity will deliver the result you expected. But every moment becomes an asset if you know how to use it.

The Paris Hilton photo that led us to Rachael Ray.
The TV segment that didn’t sell a single product—but opened doors we never saw coming.

Because building a brand isn’t just about collecting wins. It’s about knowing what to do with every outcome.

Twenty-two years ago, I knew I wanted to build something that made an impact.

I just don’t think I could’ve fully imagined where it would lead.

At the time, I thought I’d be on television breaking news stories.
Instead… somehow, I ended up breaking brows around the world.

And honestly, when I look back now, the clues were always there.
I’ve always been fascinated by transformation.
By the way one small shift can change how someone feels about themselves.

That curiosity led me into a salon chair.
Into product development.
Into entrepreneurship.
Into building a brand that would eventually reach women all over the world.

And from a very young age, I was always visualizing the life I wanted.
Dress rehearsing it.
Checking boxes.
Learning the skills I thought I’d need one day.

I just never imagined those skills would lead me here.

The Plain Truth is this:
Sometimes the vision starts in one direction.
But when you stay connected to what genuinely lights you up
The path is clear and waiting for you with open arms to what’s possible.

The Hidden Reality of Nonprofits

After fifteen years of serving young mothers through her non-profit Generation Her, Dianna Smiley isn’t asking how to maintain what she’s built.

She’s asking how to make it better.
Better curriculum.
Better programming.
Better support.
Better outcomes.

ā€œI’m always looking at how to make it better.ā€
The young women she serves notice too.
They see the improvements.
They experience the evolution.
They benefit from a commitment to never settling for good enough.

That mindset isn’t limited to nonprofits.
It’s true in business.
It’s true in product development.
It’s true in leadership.

The Plain Truth is this:
The best brands, organizations, and leaders never stop asking one simple question:

How do we make this better?

Removing The Stigma of Teenage Pregnancy With Dianna Smiley

I sat down with Dianna Smiley, the founder of Generation Her, a Non-Profit Organization operating out of Southern California.

Dianna’s story is one of the most powerful examples of what it looks like to build something from a place of pure purpose.

It started with her best friend. A teenage pregnancy in high school. And a promise Dianna made to herself that she was going to build something that loved these girls instead of judging them.

Fifteen years later, Generation Her supports young mothers ages 13 to 25 with life skills, mentoring, and a community built on one belief: come as you are.

The Plain Truth is: Every great solution starts with someone’s personal need.

It said exactly what the product did. It was clear. Memorable. Sticky.

I built the packaging.
The website.
The branding.

Then one day, I got a cease and desist letter in the mail.

And suddenly, I had two choices:
Stop selling the product… or come up with a million dollars I definitely didn’t have.

So I stripped everything back.

The packaging.
The website.
The name.

And started over.

That experience changed the way I approached business forever.
It taught me that intellectual property isn’t just legal paperwork...

It’s protection.
It’s ownership.

The Plain Truth is this:
A great idea isn’t enough.
You have to protect it.
And sometimes the lessons that cost you the most early on…
become the foundation for building a winning blueprint for the future.

Early on, I had a vision for BDB.

It was going to be one product.
A brow conditioning treatment.
One solution.
One infomercial-style pitch.

ā€œDo you have bad brows? I can help you.ā€

But then the customers started coming in.
And once they used the conditioner, they wanted more.

A pencil.
A gel.
Products that worked together.

That’s when I realized we weren’t building a one-off product.
We were building a brand.
And with that came a shift in tone, vision, and how we showed up.

The Plain Truth is this:
Sometimes your customers shine a light on what your business is truly meant to become.
And if you’re paying attention, that vision has the potential to grow into an even bigger Billion Dollar Dream.

In the early days of BDB, instead of pulling money out of the business, I poured every dollar right back in.

More inventory.
A little marketing.
SEO.
Another product.

At the time, people would ask why we weren’t taking on investors or scaling faster.

But early on, I had made the decision not to.

We were intentional about what we were building, and I understood very quickly that debt is real.

And when you build with that understanding, it changes the way you move.

You become more intentional.
More resourceful.
More connected to every decision you make.

Because when you build it yourself, there’s nowhere to hide from the outcome.
If things go down, that responsibility is yours.

But when things go up?
That’s yours too.

And there’s something incredibly powerful about that.

So believe in yourself.
Believe in your vision.
And don’t underestimate what steady, intentional growth has the potential to become over time.
