Every flower carries a tiny negative electrical charge. As positively charged bees approach, they can detect these electrical fields, helping them identify which flowers have recently been visited and which still offer nectar #bees by @theploversegg

With more than 73,000 known tree species on Earth, each has its own signature and bark is one of the easiest ways to recognize it. Long before leaves emerge or flowers bloom, the texture, pattern, and color of a tree’s bark can reveal its identity. To those who know how to read it, every trunk tells a different story.

Nature leaves fingerprints everywhere.

You probably didn’t expect this, but slugs are more closely related to octopuses than they are to worms.

Both are mollusks, sharing an ancient ancestor from hundreds of millions of years ago. Evolution simply took them in very different directions #slugs by @theploversegg

A lightning bug (more accurately, a firefly) exploring the moss-covered bark.

Fireflies aren’t flies at all they’re beetles. The light they produce comes from a nearly 100% efficient chemical reaction between luciferin, luciferase, oxygen, and ATP, creating “cold light” with almost no heat. Each species flashes its own unique pattern to communicate, most often to attract a mate.
