Not where I thought I’d be at age 34 (no husband, no kids, no home ownership, no idea where this career is really headed LOL just having fun with it as I go) but still happy to be on this earth. I’ve decided I don’t need to have it all figured out. I’m happy as long as I live day by day according to my values and principles and as long as I’m trying to make my little corner of the world a better place.

For a while I was despairing that I couldn’t help as much as I wanted—how do you help all the animals? all the people?—and that got me in a really dark place (ask @chheeeeea). But I’ve decided that even if I can’t help all the animals in the world, or even all the animals in Saipan, I can at least try to help the animals on my block. So I’ve rescued a stray dog who was abandoned by his owners who I always pass by on my street. And I’ve been helping to deworm my neighbor’s puppies and treat them for ticks and fleas. I’ve also been trying to educate my neighbors about the benefits of spaying and neutering their pets. Thank you @okarukas.sakurako and @kspn2_news for featuring the solar project on your 10/16 episode. 🙏🏻

The public frequently asks CUC what it is doing to lower electric rates. ⚡️ Well, this is one of the ways we can lower the rates. This project will objectively lower the FAC, as expert economist Robert Young testifies in this news piece (slide 3).

But the solar project will die if the CPUC (CUC’s regulator) does not vote to approve it by 10/31. The solar contractor has already stated that they will pull out of the project if CPUC approval is not obtained by 10/31. 🥀

We live on a beautiful tropical island with lots of sunshine ☀️ yet we rely sooo heavily on expensive imported diesel to generate our electricity 😭

This electricity was already expensive…
Now with global fuel prices rising, it’s even worse 😭😭

BUT GUESS WHAT! There is a solution 👀

Commonwealth Utilities Corporation (CUC) is working on a MAJOR solar energy project that could be a GAME CHANGER for the CNMI.

Just think…
☀️more affordable electricity
♻️cleaner renewable energy
🚧hundreds of local jobs
💰millions in savings
🚫less reliance on imported diesel

THE GOAL?
Generate 40% of CNMI’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028.

BUT!!! The project still needs approval from Commonwealth Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the entity that regulates CUC. They are reviewing the proposal and will ultimately decide whether to approve it or kill it.

➡️ There will be another public meeting soon... prob the end of this month. These meetings are PUBLIC! You can go and show your support. You can make a statement.

A GOOD HUMAN saw this dog lying on the side of the road yesterday. She stopped. He looked dead but.. you should always double check. Right?

He was alive 😭

Later, another person told us they saw him being dragged to the side of the road. A mat was placed over him, and a cone next to him. But he was left to suffer.

This dog was left to suffer and die alone on the street after being run over.

The good human brought him to us. Our visiting vet @cityvet_southaustin evaluated him. The injuries were not compatible with life. Not here. 😔

We gave him so much love, and helped him cross the rainbow bridge 🌈 with dignity.

We noticed he had a collar. If this is your dog, please know that we took the best care of him we could ❤️🕊️

Now imagine if we didn’t exist. What would happen to dogs like this? What about dogs who could be saved with a little care? It’s heartbreaking to think about.

Pico was a profoundly odd dog. He enjoyed sleeping in a giant tub of dirt. He also slept behind flower bushes and sometimes crushed the flowers (much to Lek’s chagrin). If he wasn’t chillin’ in the open air toolshed/workspace, you could probably find him in the carport guarding the house, or running around the garden getting into mischief with his brother Luca. Pico was a cheeky boy, a free spirit, beloved by all — but most especially by Doc, and Lek, and Nate, and Absinthe, and Luca, and Lacey, and Dan, and Ferleen, and Denise, and Gin, and Dean, and me. He will not be remembered by the cancer that marked the final days of his life but rather by the immeasurable joy that he brought us all for so many years. He is laid to rest in the garden that he so often liked to wander. [October 2014 - July 22, 2026] Chase had an autoimmune disease that caused his immune system to attack his red blood cells. He became severely anemic, lethargic, and stopped eating. Two blood transfusions and several nights at the emergency vet later, he came home with a slew of medications to allow him to live comfortably for as long as his little body could hold on for. I’m told that most animals that experience a sudden onset of Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) don’t live past the first few weeks after diagnosis. Chase lived for another 14 months.

His life-saving medication that he took daily caused him to gain a lot of weight, and we learned to love this new version of him. The version that took slower walks and did it with a cute little waddle. The version that required patience, because he needed to take more breaks in between. The version that demanded to be picked up more, because he could no longer jump on the couch. The version that needed a special diet, and that required us to make sure someone was home at the same time every morning and every night so that he took his medication at the same time every day. What a privilege it was to learn to love this new version of him.

Chase passed away peacefully in his sleep, in bed with my dad (his favorite human) and his two doggy brothers (his best friends). I’m far from home but can’t stop thinking about it as another scary storm approaches. Didn’t Super Typhoon Sinlaku happen like, yesterday?! Give us a break 🥲

Somebody messaged me on here wondering what to expect. Her brother is on island for a contract and has never been through anything like this. I gave some advice that was second nature to me.. but it actually helped them!

So on that note, here is a summary of what I’ve seen about this brewing storm so far.

I’m no weather lady, but the most concerning part for me so far are the words RAPID INTENSIFICATION. I don’t like that 🥲

I somehow became a news source in those early days post-Sinlaku. I’m willing to do that again.. but hope I don’t have to. Let’s NOT 😵‍💫
