Packing lists aren’t a one fits all kind of thing. I use this list as a baseline and work from there. Some items (like a trash bag) are swapped out for other items with the same intended use (like a waterproof pack liner). Other times, the adventure I’m packing for requires specific gear for the activity or conditions, like binos, a tripod, fishing gear, extra cold weather layers, etc. Maybe instead of a tent, I pack a hammock setup. Regardless, this list makes sure I cover all of my bases to stay alive and stay comfortable in any adventure. Feel free to save this list and then make your own additions or subtractions as necessary.

WILDERNESS HAZARD BRIEF // BEARS 🐻

North America is home to several species and subspecies of bear, each with different ranges, behaviors, and potential dangers. Knowing what you may encounter and how to respond, is an important part of traveling through bear country.

AMERICAN BLACK BEAR // Ursus americanus
Found throughout much of the U.S. and Canada. Black bears generally avoid people, but defensive and rare predatory attacks occur. Despite the name, their coats can also be brown, cinnamon, or even nearly white.

GRIZZLY BEAR // Ursus arctos horribilis
Found primarily in Alaska, western Canada, and parts of the northwestern U.S. Extremely powerful and potentially dangerous when surprised, protecting cubs, or defending food.

KODIAK BEAR // Ursus arctos middendorffi
Found only on Alaska’s Kodiak Archipelago. A subspecies of brown bear and one of the largest bears on Earth. Their immense size and strength demand serious respect and distance.

POLAR BEAR // Ursus maritimus
Found throughout the Arctic. Polar bears are apex predators and present a different threat than most bear encounters as a polar bear may deliberately approach or pursue a human as potential prey.

IN BEAR COUNTRY:
• Carry accessible bear spray where appropriate
• Carry a firearm powerful enough for a bear.
• Make noise in areas with poor visibility
• Secure food, trash, and scented items
• Never approach or feed a bear
• Never run from a bear
• Give bears plenty of space and an escape route
• Know the species in your area and how to respond to an encounter

There is no single response for every bear encounter. A defensive grizzly encounter is different from a predatory black bear or polar bear attack.

Know the animal. Know the signs. Carry the right equipment. Know how to respond before you need to. Your life, the life of your children and spouse and the lives of others with you, depend on it.

Everything cured up nicely 👌🏽

I pretty much paint every rifle the same. Even if I switch up the colors a little bit or need to use more of one color than the other, the pattern/style stays the same. Camo colors all have to layer the right way for me to like the paint job. I use a general Multicam layering process every time and have it saved to the notes in my phone. If I only have 4 colors, I just skip that layer but otherwise keep the same order.

1- lightest color (sand/light tan)
2- darkest color (dark green)
3- medium color (nutmeg)
4- gradients of dark (dark brown using a laundry bag)
5- medium color (skipped for this one)

The scope wrap is DIY from leftover skrim netting and a piece of an old fishing net. I personally don’t want to paint my optics in the event I need to send it in for warranty.

THE BASICS KEEP YOU ALIVE.

Food. Water. Fire. Shelter. 🥩💧⛺️

It doesn’t matter whether you’re heading several miles into the backcountry, spending a night in the woods, or simply getting away from the trailhead for the day. You should have the ability to take care of your basic needs when something doesn’t go according to plan.

For us, that means carrying the equipment and having the skills to use it. These are just a few of the basics.

-A reliable way to filter and purify water.
-A way to boil water and prepare that food.
-Enough food to maintain energy, plus an emergency reserve.

The gear in this reel is simple: a GRAYL for water, stove and cook kit, a freeze-dried meal, and the equipment carried in the pack. None of it is particularly complicated.

That’s the point.

Preparedness isn’t about carrying everything you own into the woods. It’s about understanding what you actually need, building dependable systems around those needs, and knowing how to use them. Get outside and familiarize yourself with your gear. It’s your responsibility, not only to yourself, but for your children and your fellow man. WILDERNESS HAZARD BRIEF // CATERPILLARS 🚨🐛

Not every wilderness hazard has teeth, claws, or fangs.

My son recently had a significant reaction after contact with a Sycamore Tussock Moth caterpillar, while we were hiking in a small canyon and it was a reminder that some of the smallest things in the woods can cause serious problems. Hundreds of the little fiberglass like hairs from the caterpillar got all over him which prompted this dive into the dangers of little critters. (He’s all good now)

The Sycamore Tussock, Puss Caterpillar, Saddleback, Io Moth, and White Flannel Moth caterpillars are all found within parts of North America. Depending on the species, their hairs or spines can cause burning, intense itching, painful welts, swelling, blistering, and potentially serious reactions.

IF CONTACT OCCURS:
• Don’t rub or scratch the area
• Use tape to lift remaining hairs/spines from the skin
• Wash thoroughly with soap and water
• Apply a cold pack
• Monitor closely for a worsening reaction
• Seek immediate medical attention for breathing difficulty, facial/throat swelling, or other severe symptoms

KEEP IN YOUR WILDERNESS MED KIT:
• Medical/duct tape
• Nitrile gloves
• Clean water + soap
• Instant cold pack
• 1% hydrocortisone
• Appropriate antihistamine
• Tweezers
• Basic first-aid supplies
• Prescribed epinephrine auto-injector when applicable

Teach your kids a simple rule: Just don’t touch caterpillars… especially anything fuzzy, hairy, or covered in spines.

Know what’s out there and know how to respond.

Be a Prepared Protector.

WATER. FOOD. FIRE.

Some of the most important skills in the wilderness are also some of the simplest.

You need a way to make questionable water safe to drink. You need a way to boil water and cook food. And you need to actually carry the equipment and food necessary to do it.

This can be as simple as the GRAYL for filtering water, the GRAYL Pocket Stove, a metal cup, and a Peak Refuel meal. (There’s a ton of different meals out there. Test and pick your favorites.)

Nothing complicated. Nothing excessive. Just making sure you have the capability to get clean water, boil it, make a hot meal and keep moving.

More importantly, know how to use what you carry. Get outside. Filter water. Set up your stove. Cook with it. Figure out what works before you’re ever in a situation where you actually need it.

These are just some of the basics. Many aren’t aware of the skills, how to carry the gear, or how to use it. Run your gear.

Shelter-

My all time favorite “tent”, over the expensive tents and lightweight backpacking tents I own and have used, is a 10’x10’ rainfly/ tarp that I bought off of Amazon when I nearly exclusively switched to hammock camping.

When I don’t hammock camp, I usually just use the rainfly to build a tarp shelter. I’ve done this a handful of ways and listed my favorites so they can be saved for later. I’ve found that a properly placed and set up tarp shelter can withstand just about anything. It’s also kept me totally dry in some pretty gnarly thunderstorms while hammock camping.

Again, this is a cheap Amazon tarp/rainfly. I first learned these techniques as a kid using a common tarp you’d find at the local hardware store. A hardware store tarp is going to be heavier, bulkier, and noisier, but it will work the same, and better at keeping the water out without question. I highly recommend trying hammock camping and making your next adventure a little more simple and primitive with a tarp shelter. As you can see, they’re useful for all seasons.

I’m excited to share more about my hammock camping journey so far, how I set it up for various weather conditions, and what gear I bought to start compared to where it’s at now. I’ll also have some videos up that cover tarp shelters made with this tarp and a smaller tarp or (heavy duty) poncho.

Having good gear is more important than you realize. But actually running your gear is even more important.
The gear you carry in the wilderness should have a purpose and you should know how to use it. Run your gear absolutely as much as you can.

A solid pack with a quality frame and carry system gives you the ability to carry the equipment you need to stay out longer and deal with changing conditions. A good bino harness (usually for hunting) keeps the smaller essentials accessible without having to drop your pack every time you need something.

And protection is part of preparedness, no matter how you look at it. Whether you’re miles into the backcountry or a few miles from the truck, you’re responsible for your own safety and the safety of the people with you. A reliable pistol paired with a quality holster is part of my wilderness setup for exactly that reason. And just like any other gear, you need to go to the range and be familiar with your firearm.

You don’t need to carry everything but you need to know how to use what you do carry.

Carry what works. Know how to use it. Be prepared.

‼️🦣Protector Group! Mammoth Tribe! Some news.🦣‼️

I’ve said it before, but one of my favorite parts about building Protector Group Solutions has been the relationships that have come from it. I’m not interested in collecting logos or working with companies just to say that I do. I want to build real relationships with good people and companies that make quality gear, believe in what they’re doing, and actually give a damn about the community behind it.

That’s exactly what has started with Ex Umbris Designs.
Gone back and forth a bit and after talking with the man behind the company, I’m genuinely excited about where this relationship is going. He’s a good human, incredibly knowledgeable, and it’s obvious that a lot of thought and experience goes into the gear he’s building.

I’ll be putting this rig through its paces, training with it, getting it dirty, figuring out what I like and sharing more as I spend time with it. So far, wearing it a couple times walking around the neighborhood with it… it’s very comfortable, fits great and feels like incredible quality. Can’t wait to get it out in the wilderness. As I always say, Run Your Gear, Not Your Mouth. I’ll actually be using this and beating the shit out of it at the range, edc, hunting season, hiking, etc.

Rad things ahead between Protector Group and Ex Umbris, and I’m looking forward to seeing where we can take this.
