On October 25, 2023, I briefly shared my decision to leave higher education after nine years of dedicated service. In doing so, I shared how God had called me to embrace my purpose fully and introduced #FromHigherEdtoAHigherPurpose. I also mentioned in the next couple of weeks, I would invite everyone to join me on a journey to accomplish many different HBCU-dedicated projects and initiatives (many of which I have been sitting on for years)—sitting on for years due to many invalid feelings, a lack of knowledge and resources (all of which no longer exist anymore).

What better week than American Education Week to introduce my new nonprofit organization, HBCaUseofyou®?

The mission of HBCaUseofyou is to ignite and cultivate the full potential of current, past, and next-generation philanthropists through transformative research, innovative programming, and fully immersive experiences and charitable events.

Portions of all event proceeds benefit current and future Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) scholars.

HBCaUseofyou has five program initiatives:
1. The HBCaUseofyou Scholarship Foundation
2. The National Museum of Historically Black Colleges and Universities®
3. Project HBCU
4. Step Up to the Plate
5. HBCUltivate

For the past nine years, I've dedicated my life to higher education. So much so that in the summer of 2018, I made an abrupt but necessary decision to finally enroll in the Ph.D. program in Higher Education Administration at Morgan State University after feeling incredibly defeated in a meeting and feeling as if my voice didn't matter because I didn't have those three unique letters (Ph.D.) behind my name. While I don't regret my decision (I always knew I'd pursue my doctorate), as I genuinely believe earning my doctorate is necessary for my purpose, in July, I made the decision that I would no longer apply for jobs in higher education and focus more on making a difference outside of the "ivory tower."

While I have chosen not to elaborate on some of the significant events that contributed to my decision (but in due season when I REAP, I will), I will say this: when God tells you to move, and you don't, he will move you. And while at first the move may be scary, unfair, and appear as a "failure," God will bring BLESSINGS from the ashes of what you and/or others perceive as "failures" to align you with your purpose. Just wait for my testimony!

To this end, my purpose is what I have learned and earned from answering the call nine years ago.

That being said, I now present to you 'From Higher Ed to A Higher Purpose.'

In the next couple of weeks, I will invite you to join me on a journey to accomplish many different HBCU-dedicated projects and initiatives (many of which I have been sitting on for years)—sitting on for years as a result of control, fear, a lack of resources, and self-doubt; all of which no longer exist anymore.

For the past two birthdays, I’ve made it clear that I didn’t want anything for my birthday, despite having gone on a six-day vacation last year and crying because I missed my newborn baby. Nevertheless, Jamal always insists that I tell him what I want, because in his words, “It’s your birthday.” But what does one ask for when the person you love makes you feel like it’s your birthday every day? When you are loved, supported, cared for, and provided for daily?

This year, I was genuinely happy just to wake up, hop on my Peloton, and do a LIVE ride on my actual birthday with @robinnyc. I not only completed 9.16 miles in 30 minutes, but it also happened to be my 450th ride! 🥳💪🏾🚴🏾‍♀️

After that, all I wanted was to spend OUR birthday weekend together, while witnessing and rejoicing in the love of others.

There was no big birthday wish list or extravagant requests; just gratitude for another year of life, and the blessing of experiencing it all with my person.

That said, Happy 37th Birthday to me (September 10) and my MAN (September 12). And, congratulations to Charisma and Jo-Quan as well!

I am excited to announce that I have been appointed to the North Atlantic Regional (NAR) Communications Team under the R.I.S.E. Administration by Dr. Tonja L. Ringgold, Regional Director.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute my experience, creativity, and passion for communications in service to the Notable North Atlantic Region. I hope to make my region @nar_1908 , chapter @akapiphiomega, and initiating chapter @aka_ueo PROUD.
