I heard a quote that said, “When you lose a parent, the world is off its axis, and it never rights itself.”

Three years have passed since my father died. Three extremely tough, emotional, life-changing years.

It still doesn’t feel real. It feels like a bad dream.

All loss hurts. Losing friends, losing family — every goodbye leaves a mark on your heart. But some losses exist on an entirely different level. The depth of grief is shaped by the depth of the connection.

When you lose someone who was woven into your daily life — someone who knew your thoughts without explanation, who shared your routines, your memories, your future plans — the loss isn’t just of a person. It’s the loss of a part of yourself and the life you imagined continuing with them.

Those are the losses that don’t simply fade with time. You learn to carry them. You learn to live around the absence. The world keeps moving forward, but a piece of your world remains forever changed.

Grief isn’t measured by titles or labels. It’s measured by love. And the deeper the love, the deeper the loss. Real deep loss changes you.

Death shifts your entire perspective on life. You begin to see everything differently — time, relationships, priorities, even the ordinary moments that once felt insignificant. Before experiencing deep loss, most of us move through life without really thinking about its ending. It feels distant, abstract, almost unreal.

But once you face that depth of loss, you understand something profound: Life has a finish line. And no matter how much we love, hope, or wish otherwise, there is nothing we can do to change that.

It’s an overwhelming realization — a new way of seeing life that only comes through experiencing its fragility.

And so, I carry on — one day at a time, honoring my father. Striving to be better than I was before. I carry his lessons, his values, his strength, and his love with me every day.

I love you Dad. by @theprodigalson48
