December 12, 2008: I was laid off from my full-time job. I was 9 months pregnant.

January 1, 2009: My daughter was born.

January 20, 2009: I held her while watching President Obama’s first inauguration.

At the time, I had no idea how much that presidency would shape my life.

By June 2009, unemployed and trying to rebuild, I re-enrolled in college after dropping out five years earlier. I survived on severance pay, unemployment, welfare, determination and faith.

In December 2011, I applied for the White House Internship Program.

On January 17, 2012, I started working at the White House. I helped coordinate interviews during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. I met President Obama during an Essence Magazine interview with Emil Wilbekin and the late Gwen Ifill. But honestly, it’s the smaller moments I treasure most: welcoming visitors into the White House and watching older Black women cry when I said, “Welcome to the White House,” because neither they nor I imagined we’d ever be there. Taking my daughter to the Easter Egg Roll. Bowling in Truman Alley. Long nights compiling press clips after the State of the Union. Preparing briefing books and witnessing history unfold in real time.

Most meaningful of all was my daughter growing up seeing a Black president as normal. For eight years, leadership looked like excellence, grace, intelligence, and possibility.

This week I visited the Obama Presidential Center campus in Chicago with my mom and brother, who both helped me believe this experience was possible. It was bittersweet seeing images of the east room & the rose garden, spaces my daughter once frolicked in that have since been destroyed. It made me wonder if things could ever feel that hopeful again. But throughout the campus there were constant reminders that hope does not move in straight lines.

Hope is a continuum.

The mere fact that someone like me (a once pregnant college dropout) could find herself working in the White House is proof of why hope matters.

As President Obama said: “This is not a period. It’s a comma.”

I love the adventures my daughter takes me on. Even gifts TO her feel like a gift to myself. This was so much more fun than any of us expected. A super duper late happy birthday to my princess. She only gives me permission to post her online here and there. Glad she approved this one! 🥰 #jcpenney #jcpennyportraits #jcpenny taken in JCPenney by @thequeenmuse

Coming up in church we always said a simple prayer: Thank you God for my life, health, and strength. You kind of just said it, like grace before a meal. I can’t express how much this prayer means to me now.

I haven’t seen this number on the scale since I was 20. And it’s not even the number that really matters; it’s the journey I’ve been on to get there.

At the peak of the pandemic, I was 220lbs and pre-diabetic. After losing my E, I went through the up and down waves of loss and gain from grief and depression; eating my feelings one day, too angry at life to eat at all on others.

Sometime in 2022, exercise became my refuge; how I processed everything I was feeling, the disappointment, the disbelief, the desire to no longer be here. With every movement, I felt myself claw back a little bit of life, a little bit of hope.

I started spending a few days a week at the Y.
I went back to running, something I hadn’t done since my 20s, and found community with 5k runners.
The I joined a wonderful group of women on the river as part of a dragon boat racing team; a sport I had no knowledge of but jumped wholeheartedly into, and have found nothing but joy in the process of learning a new sport and connecting with other women who, too, grapple with life’s challenges through physical activity.

All I can say is I’m blessed.
All I can say is I’m grateful.
All I can say is thank you God, for my life, health, and strength. by @thequeenmuse

A little late, but too good to not share. I sat down with @williamscollege Professor Cynthia Holland to talk about her fascinating research into whether plants use chemistry as a secret language. From grapes to maize, her lab is uncovering how compounds like methyl anthracite might let plants “talk” to each other, and why that could be critical in a changing climate.

This may have felt more heavenly because I was in a state of delirium from all the lack of sleep this summer 🤣😂 but it was heavenly nonetheless. I do a lot but nothing warms my heart more than taking care of my babies and seeing their smiles. So proud of these two and grateful to be their mom ❤️❤️ taken in Niagara Falls State Park, USA by @thequeenmuse

I recently had the opportunity to interview Paul Kusserow, former CEO and current Chair of the Board at Amedisys, about the evolving landscape of health care. We discussed the challenges and innovations shaping the industry—from the growing demand for home health services to how technology is redefining patient care. Paul also shared his insights on leadership and the lessons he’s learned throughout his career.

Check out our conversation in @wesleyan_u Magazine to learn how he’s helping shape the future of health care.
