T D Ramakrishnan's (@tdramakrishnan ) PACHA MANJA CHUVAPPU is a story against the backdrop of the Indian Railways and the working class in it.
The book is an investigative thriller anchoring the real world 1995 Lokur-Danishpet train collision in Tamilnadu.

Ramachandran master, an honest and upright employee of railways was blamed for the accident and he takes his own life due to the pressure and guilt of the accident, even though he is an innocent.
During the time of covid, Jawala a journalist along with Aravind starts investigating the unsolved anomalies surrounding the accident.

As they dig deep into the case, it reveals what looks like a simple human error or a mechanical failure is a complicated web of multi billion-dollar lobbies, systemic corruption, political intrigue, corporate intelligence and bureaucratic acquiescence.

T D Ramakrishnan portrays the inner workings of the Railways precisely, how the system functions, how being an honest man in a group of power mongering, unfaithful men destroys oneself.

The book navigates through many emotions, it is chaotic, uncomfortable and let you think, analyse and feel the unpredictability of fate and human cruelty.

Etaf Rum's (@etafrum) A Woman Is No Man is a beautifully written intergenerational story of three Palestinian-American women.

The story alternates between a mother, her daughter and the grandmother.
Isra, a Palestinian married off to a Palestinian-American comes to a new country with dreams of love and freedom, but falls prey to deep postpartum depression and domestic violence.
Deya (Isra's daughter) was torn between her grandmother's expectations and her own dreams.
Fareeda (grandmother) the enforcer of the very misogynistic system that oppressed her.

The story revolves around the domestic space reflecting how early marriages, pressure of bearing a male heir, confinement into the four walls and patriarchal norms affect a woman psychologically.

Rum balances the narrative tension by alternating chapters between Isra's tragic life and Deya's detective like uncovering of her family secret.

The novel highlights how immigrant communities become much more conservative than their place of origin in the name of preserving their roots, making domestic space into physical and psychological prison, how abused women often become the enforcers of patriarchal violence, community frequently using destiny as an instrument to oppress women, her worth being tied entirely on her chastity and ability to produce male heirs.

And then there are books, the only escape available to these women. The only thing that holds them in all the adversities, the only thing that provided them some comfort.

A woman is no man is a devastating examination of the price women pay when communities value patriarchal norms above the Individual.

Palestine or America, a woman will always be alone💔

Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai's (@nguyenphanquemai_ )THE MOUNTAINS SING is a heart-wrenching piece of historical fiction.
A multigenerational story that chronicles the 20th century history of Vietnam through the experiences of Trần family. The novel provides an authentic, agonising and empathetic reconstruction of history.

The story alternates between two different timelines and narrated first-person by a grandmother and her granddaughter.
Diêu Lan(grandmother)born in 1920 in a North Vietnam village experiences the French colonial era, the Japanese occupation of Vietnam during World War ll, the Great famine of 1945 and the turbulent Land reforms of 1950s in the North.
Húóng(granddaughter) growing up in 1970s witnesses the American Operation Linebacker ll(Christmas Bombings). In this story both of them are turning their brutal memories and experiences into a shield of endurance, resilience and identity.

Quế Mai talks about the Vietnamese families, how civilians are torn apart, siblings fighting on the opposite sides, parents waiting years for their kids to return, lasting generational trauma, cruel face of war, effects of Agent Orange and unexploded shells.

One of the boldest arcs of the books is Land reforms of 1950s. Rather than praising the reforms, the novel dive deeper into the terror, trials, betrayals and killings carried out in the name of strict party line.

The novel doesn't look away from political cruelty, ideological extremism or the wreckage of war, yet the book chooses peace, emotional restoration, motherhood, power of reading and pride in Vietnamese history and culture.

It is gripping, heart breaking and overwhelming to read through this succession of catastrophes.
But still it gives the hope and strength to overcome every adversities.

Banu Mushtaq's Heart Lamp: Selected stories is a landmark collection of short stories originally written in Kannada and translated into English by Deepa Bhasthi.
This collection brings to light the everyday realities of Muslim women in small town south India particularly in Karnataka.

Each story carries deep empathy, sharp wit and clarity. It speaks about gender politics, patriarchy, communal harmony and tension, domestic labour and quiet rebellion inside the four walls.

Her stories unfold inside kitchens, courtyards and small bedrooms. The female domestic sphere is portrayed as a place of quiet resistance and emotional survival.
The female protagonists don't abandon their Muslim identity to seek liberation, instead they use their understanding of justice, love, compassion and humanity to challenge the regressive laws imposed on them.

The stories speak about the little things and emotions which are not so little in a person's life.
Mushtaq's prose is humorous, sarcastic and surgically sharp. The women do not just weep ;they mock foolish men and the rules they imposed on them.

The local dialects and colloquial Idioms in the book, which didn't get lost in translation, give the read a local texture and warmth.

Each story ends very simply, often leaving an unsettling echo. But when we take a moment to think, we'll understand the depth of each one- a moment of quick revelation.
The reading itself felt simple, but after each story I had to pause and think for a while.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's THE PALACE OF ILLUSIONS is a feminist retelling of the Indian epic Mahabharata.

Narrated in first person by Draupadi, the novel travels through her life, her fiery birth, swayamvara, the maya sabha, Dice game and gambling, Kurukshetra war and her final ascent into the Himalayas.
(If I share anything more it will be a spoiler🙂)

Unlike classical retelling which focuses on wars, tactics and philosophical treatises of Mahabharata. Divakaruni chooses the female gaze, shifts the canvas to domestic space. Through Draupadi's eyes the honor and dharma of kshatriya are rigid, destructive obsessions of power and empire that inevitably sacrifice women and children.
Dharma here is a weapon used by powerful men to maintain their position, rather than the righteousness or duty.

The book is lyrical, flowing and sensory-rich.
Author exposes the complex female relationships, physical and psychological destruction carried by war and Burden of prophecy.

In this novel Draupadi is honoured, her grief, fury, trauma and Liberation are honoured.
@divakarunichitra

It is just reading and thinking about a epic from different perspective and I loved it.

I first read it a long time ago, but re-read it few weeks back🙂

T D Ramakrishnan's SUGANDHI ENNA ANDAL DEVANAYAKI (translation Sugandhi Alias Andal Devanayaki translated by Priya K Nair) is a novel of postmodern fiction, which explores political terror, myth-making, and female bodily autonomy.

The story unfolds by featuring Peter a director commissioned by the Sri Lankan state to direct a feature film on Dr. RAJANI THIRANAGAMA, (she is a real-world Tamil human rights activist, a university lecturer who was assassinated in 1989 after revealing the atrocities done by the LTTE & Sri Lankan state military).

Through this project Peter was also on a quest to find SUGANDHI , an ex-LTTE cadre and his long lost love. She vanished into the civil war, state detention and underground resistance network. Sugandhi's identity interweave with DEVANAYAKI a 10th century figure. The backbone of this novel is these three women.

The book enters a metaphysical, folklore, tantric concepts and historical dimensions too. The story jumps between medieval Dravidian history and 21st century war ruins.

T D Ramakrishnan pulls no punches in telling us how exactly the Patriarchal empires and ideologies change but the violence enacted upon dissenting women remains unchanged, how warfare reduces women's bodies to sites of territorial conquest, rape camps run buy states, exploitation within the detention cells. Both Nationalist and Liberation movements equally exploit women.

Rather than glorifying warriors or state, he talks about the woman as the sole enduring witnesses of power mongers.
This read made me think, weep and think again.

Lallan Sweets by Srishti Chaudhary is a desi cozy fiction.
Lallan sweets is famous for its mouth watering Laddus which is prepared using a magical ingredient. The family head Lalaji prepares to retire from the business and instead of simply handing over the lineage he sets a quest for his three grand children Tara, Rohit & Mohit, the winner will get the inheritance.

Tara the feisty, practical and determined was dying to prove her capability. Nikku her childhood friend joins her along the quest and the two sets out on a journey filled with unexpected encounters, adventures, family secrets and self discovery.

The book brings back the 90s nostalgia, bollywood and the way gender politics worked in the generational business families. Food is not just food it is nostalgic and emotional here.It is a easy breezy read.

But the story is predictable and somewhere the antagonist of Tara lost their importance, there is no complex competition or rivalry.
Overall it is a cozy read, comforting, friends to lovers romance and light hearted quest for independence and identity.
You can pick this one for that warm, light hearted Indian read...

Have You Read this One before? What is your thought on this?
