👋 Hey new friends! Lots of new faces so I wanted to take a minute to reintroduce myself!

I’m Jennifer Vincent—therapist, adoptee mom, wife, dog lover, and proud cycle breaker. I’ve been doing this therapy thing for almost two decades (yep, I’ve heard it all). I’m a Boston girly now living in the South, which basically means I say "wicked smart" and "y’all" in the same sentence.

I own Therapy for Cycle Breakers here is sunny St. Petersburg, Florida where we help people heal the stuff no one talks about at family gatherings. (trust me I've been making family meals awkward for a longer than some of you have been alive)

I work with folks who:

✨ Look calm + capable on the outside but are one spilled coffee away from a breakdown

✨ Are always the helper… and secretly resent it

✨ Are in the middle of big life shifts and wondering, “Is it just me or is everything on fire?”

If that sounds like you, you’re in the right place.

Stick around—we do real healing here (with a side of humor and a little bit of cussing). 🧠💥💛

We aren’t talking about this part enough right now: the lifelong impact of sexual assault on survivors.

Sexual assault doesn’t end when the assault ends. As a trauma specialist, I see the impact years and sometimes decades later. I see survivors who struggle to feel safe in their own bodies EVER AGAIN, who panic when they’re touched unexpectedly, who dissociate during intimacy, who have difficulty trusting people they love, or who constantly scan their surroundings for danger. I see people who struggle to set boundaries because at one point their boundaries didn’t matter to someone else. I see hyper-independence, nightmares, shame, anxiety, anger, substance use, people-pleasing, difficulty with sex and intimacy, and nervous systems that learned a long time ago that the world wasn’t safe.

And I see survivors who look completely “fine.” They have careers, marriages, children, friendships and full lives—and they are still healing from something that happened 10, 20, even 40 years ago.

This is what gets lost when we talk about sexual assault as though it is one horrific event that happened and then ended. For the person who experienced it, the consequences can reach into relationships, parenting, sexuality, self-worth, physical safety and the ability to trust their own body.

Healing absolutely happens. I witness that too. But healing can be a lifelong process, and survivors should never have had to spend years rebuilding a sense of safety that someone else chose to take from them.

The first time I walked into a therapy office, I was fucking terrified.

Not because the therapist was scary.

Because I had no idea what I was supposed to say.

I hadn't grown up talking about mental health. Therapy wasn't something my family did. Honestly, I barely even knew what therapy was until a friend told me she went and suggested I try it.

So I sat there wondering:

✏️ Do I just… tell this stranger everything?
❓️ Where the hell do I even start?
😱 What if she thinks I'm dramatic?
🤦🏻‍♀️ What if my problems aren't “bad enough” for therapy?

I had no idea that walking into that room would eventually change the direction of my entire life. 👩🏻‍⚕️

And I definitely didn't know that one day I'd be the therapist sitting in the other chair.

Sometimes cycle breaking starts with doing something your family never taught you how to do.

For me, one of those things was asking for help.

Because sometimes you just have to call it like it is. Being seen is healing. I got you. 💃

You don't have to wait until you're overwhelmed to decide you've had enough.

I think a lot of us learned that we need a *good enough reason* to stop.

You can’t cancel unless you’re sick.
You can’t say no unless you’re already too busy.
You can’t leave unless it’s really bad.
You can’t ask for help until you’ve tried everything yourself.

So we keep going.

Until we’re exhausted. Pissed off. Crying over something that normally wouldn’t bother us. Wondering why the hell everything suddenly feels like too much.

But you actually don’t have to get there first.

“I don’t want to take that on” is enough.

“I need a night at home” is enough.

“I have the time, but I don’t have the energy” is enough.

You’re allowed to stop *before* you’re completely fucking depleted.

That’s kind of the point. by @therapyforcyclebreakers

Love having a bad ass team that’s always getting out in the community for events! Have a wellness event coming up? Send us the information we’d love to attend!

I don’t owe you unlimited access to me just because you’re my parent. #adultchild

You choosing to have me doesn’t mean I agreed to a lifetime without boundaries.

I can love you and still need space.
I can appreciate what you’ve done and still say no.
I can be your child and still be my own person.

Every relationship deserves boundaries and mutual respect—even this one.

Nobody talks about how fucking lonely breaking cycles can be.

Like you start doing all this work to get healthier and somehow you end up losing people along the way.

You stop answering every call. You say no when you mean no. You realize you actually don't want to go to that family thing. You stop being the person who fixes everything for everyone.

And you think getting healthier is supposed to feel… better?

Sometimes it does.

And sometimes you're sitting there thinking, well fuck. I have boundaries now but apparently I also have three friends and nobody to call on a Tuesday 😂

I don't think we talk about that part enough.

What got lonelier when you started getting healthier? by @therapyforcyclebreakers

We were taught to get over it.
Yet some of us are choosing to go through it.

Grief makes people uncomfortable.

We know what to do with death when there’s a funeral to attend, flowers to send, a meal to drop off. But then the funeral ends. The texts slow down. Bereavement leave runs out. And somehow the person grieving is expected to return to life as if theirs didn’t just completely change.

Maybe breaking cycles around grief means we stop expecting people to make their pain easier for everyone else to be around.

We talk about them.
We say their name.
We cry when it hits us six months later in the middle of Target.
We laugh at the wildly inappropriate story.
We stop putting a timeline on something that never asked for one.

We don’t “get over” people we love.

We learn how to carry the love and the loss at the same time.
