A few things my clients have been saying lately …
1. A craving for more spontaneous, in person connection. Many clients acknowledge that dating apps are the norm - but still wish it felt more natural or organic at times.
2. A deep sense of comparison around timelines, especially among those in their mid to late twenties.
3. Waiting for a clear sign before making big life decisions. Many are looking for certainty or a green light that says “go ahead, this is the right decision”. Sometimes we get that green light; other times that kind of certainty doesn’t show up and that is the moment where I ask clients if they can move forward without all of the answers, trusting that they can handle the unknown and adjust if things don’t go according to plan. #anxiety #nyctherapy #uncertainty #therapy taken in New York, New York by @therapywithcole

Have you ever felt a strong urge to confess as part of your ocd? Many individuals with ocd feel an overwhelming need to confess perceived wrongdoings (real or imagined) as a way to alleviate anxiety. This can stem from a desire for reassurance or to correct thoughts that feel intrusive.

Realizing that you’re entitled to your own inner, private life that is just YOURS can be an empowering reminder that you can use to challenge an urge to confess.

What story has your ocd told you today?
Defusion, an ACT concept, can be a helpful tool to challenge ocd thoughts. OCD tells us stories that might sound so familiar that, at this point, we don’t see them as such. Defusion can help us take a step back from these stories and CHOOSE how we want to respond.
Defusion involves 1) noticing that you’re having a thought (and in this case, that your ocd is telling you a story) 2) creating distance from that thought so that you can thoughtfully respond to it instead of accepting it as a hard truth
*creating distance might look like saying to yourself “I am having the thought that X”
Now, we can take a look at the thought as something separate from us and CHOOSE how we want to react to that thought

Anyone who is familiar with OCD knows that when you’re experiencing the urge to engage in a compulsion, it can feel like something you “just have to do”. I want to empower you to be the boss of your ocd, not the other way around. Let’s think about this, instead: if you didn’t engage in this compulsion, what could you be doing? What else would you have time to do? What did you used to do, when ocd wasn’t at the forefront of your mind?
