✅Why I Care More About the Recovery Than the Mistake✅
Every instructor messes up mid-class at some point. That’s not what I watch for when developing talent.

What I watch is the recovery. The most confident instructors don’t hide it — a quick “oh, my bad” and they keep moving. That tiny moment says more about skill than almost anything else.

The instructors who get hired aren’t the ones who never mess up. They’re the ones whose recovery is so smooth nobody even clocks it.

By the back half of class, form starts to break down — that’s normal. The mistake is not catching it early. Comment FATIGUE and I’ll send you my fatigue-scan checklist.

Knees caving slightly, lower back rounding, shoulders creeping up — these are small and easy to miss when you’re focused on the next block.

Catch it early, offer the regression before it turns into something worse.

Some instructors treat warm-up like a throwaway — usually newer ones still finding their footing and workout pacing. Comment WARMUP and I’ll send you my warm-up checklist and I’ll send you something that will help you speed that learning curve up!

The war up is your first chance to set tone, preview what’s coming, and see how people are actually moving today — before weight’s even in their hands.

That’s information you can use to cue proactively instead of reacting later.

Ever notice how some instructors only ever seem to talk to the front row? If you are an instructor, comment EYES and I’ll send you my eye contact rotation guide.

It’s not intentional, it’s habit. Eye contact defaults to whoever’s engaging back, and the back corners get overlooked class after class.

Build a rotation into your cueing — shift your eye line every 60-90 seconds, and move toward the section you’re scanning so it actually lands.

Same energy every class regardless of headcount? That’s a mistake more instructors make than they realize.

A packed room feeds off the crowd. A smaller room doesn’t have that automatic buildup — walk in already cranked and it can feel forced.

Meet the room where it’s at first. Build connection, then bring people up with you. That’s what makes 5 people in a room built for 40 still feel full.

There’s a specific gap I look for between an instructor who’s great in their home studio and one who’s ready to walk into five different locations and deliver the same experience.

Home-room great comes easy — familiar faces, a layout you know blind, regulars who already trust you. What I actually look for is whether that energy and those standards hold up in a room with zero regulars and a totally different crowd.

Home-room great is common. Any-room great is what scales.

Here’s something I pay close attention to when assessing talent — how an instructor handles silence.

Nervous instructors rush to fill every gap. A pause becomes forced small talk because silence feels uncomfortable. Confident instructors let it exist — they trust a few quiet seconds won’t lose the room.

That comfort isn’t a personality trait. It’s a sign of how secure someone feels in front of a class.

Every class has that one person who’s clearly not okay.
Comment CHECKIN and I’ll share my tips on handling that scenario.

Most instructors either ignore it, or possibly make it worse by awkwardly calling it out in front of everyone.

You don’t need to fix it, and you don’t need an audience. A quiet “hey, you good today?” said close to them beats any big gesture. Let them show up at whatever level they can today while still feeling supported, without calling out the difference from their usual self.

When I’m evaluating instructor talent, there’s one question I ask early that tells me more in 30 seconds than watching an entire class does.

I ask: “Walk me through a class that didn’t go the way you planned.” Not their best class — their worst one.

Do they own what went wrong, or blame the room? Do they name what they adjusted, or just say they “pushed through”? This shows me their self-awareness, makes coaching conversations so much easier, and reveals how someone actually thinks on their feet.

Have you ever started a class and felt like the energy was just off? It might not be you — it might be your opening track.
Comment ENERGY and I’ll send you my energy-matching reference sheet.

Open a quiet 6am class with a high-energy song and you create a mismatch people feel but can’t name. Music isn’t background noise, it’s a cueing tool.

Read the room first, then pick your opener to match them. Keep two versions ready — one calm, one hot — and choose in the moment.

Most instructors think class starts at rep one. It doesn’t — comment OPENER and I’ll send you my pre-class 2-minute checklist.

People decide if they’re locked in or checked out before a single rep happens. If you a pend those first two minutes scattered — grabbing water, fumbling the mic — and the room mirrors that energy right back.

Use that window on purpose WITH purpose. Greet people by name. Make eye contact. Set your tone before you ever cue a movement #fitness #workout #coachingtips by @thercstandard

Correcting someone’s form mid-class is one of the most awkward moments in this job. Comment CORRECTION and I’ll send you something that’ll help.

Most instructors avoid it because they don’t want to single someone out, or they just don’t know how without making it feel that way.

Give yourself 3 seconds first. Is it a safety issue or a performance issue? Safety gets corrected quietly, one-on-one. Performance can usually fold into a group cue — “let’s make sure knees track over toes” fixes it without calling anyone out. by @thercstandard
