The first picture is me and my besties since preschool in Israel together. The second picture is from a Rosh HaShana dinner I hosted for my American friends in NYC.

After October 7th, everything shifted. My boyfriend ended things. My best friend of seven years blocked me. One by one, others drifted away. 60% of the people in that photo stopped talking to me. I realized I’d only ever been their token Jew.

I used to host Rosh HaShana, Hanukkah, Passover—cooking meals, sharing stories, weaving our history into tradition. I thought I didn’t need a Jewish community. I thought I was accepted. Until being Jewish made me a heretic.

This year, I was invited to Rosh Hashana tables by Jewish women I’d just met, in places I never expected.

The 3rd picture is from this past RH, where I unexpectedly reunited with a proud Jewish woman who I last saw when we were in diapers.

To me, Mexican culture is Jewish culture and Jewish food is Mexican food. Let me explain. My grandma was born in Mexico. She lost her mom at a young age, which led her and her siblings to get on a boat to live with our family in Israel. And that’s how it went. My family since then has been living between Israel, Mexico, and America. Usually moving to all three several times in one lifetime. So the lines between my Jewish and Hispanic identity blurred. Spanish was a language I heard mostly at Simchas (Bar/Bat Mitzvah’s and weddings). And while my other friends got matzah ball soup when visiting their grandparents, we got frijoles. I cherish those slow Shabbat mornings where she’d bicker with Tia Rosa, her sister, while we ate leftover flan together for breakfast.

Grandma (who was slightly tone deaf) was also one of the first people to introduce me to musical theatre. She’d DVR anniversary concerts for me to watch when I visited.

I had the honor of helping take care of her during her final months here on Earth. Even though at the end she sometimes only spoke to me in Spanish, she’d always ask what my next singing opportunity was. I can only imagine what she’d say if I could tell her that I get to be a part of Emily and Gloria Estefans new musical @basuramusical . And while it’s not a Mexican story, it’s a story with so much heart, just like my grandma’s story. I can’t wait to reconnect with Grandma Ana through the stories of these kids from Cateura, who, much like Ana, were able to make their difficulties into something beautiful. by @therealavital

This is for my fellow diaspora homies who’ve lost friendships for being too Jewish. These lyrics resonated with me so I translated them the best I could.
