“Dr. Donda West”

Beatrice X, 2026

Thank you @ye for sharing your beautiful mother and her encouraging words with our community. We needed this reminder.

A mother’s love is everything, but there is something even more powerful about a mother who believes in her child, supports their vision, teaches them, prays for them, and gives them the courage to become who they were created to be.

Dr. Donda West was more than the mother of Ye. She was an educator, scholar, author, businesswoman and a woman who poured into the lives of young people. She served as Chair of the English Department at Chicago State University for 24 years and later stepped away from academia to help manage her son’s career. She believed in education, creativity and encouraging young people to recognize their own potential.

What touches me most is the example of a mother who could see something in her child before the world fully recognized it. She supported her son while still teaching him the importance of education, character, discipline and thinking for himself.

And her influence reached beyond her own household. Many Chicagoans remembered Dr. West as a “village mom,” someone who opened her home and poured into Ye and the young artists around him. Her legacy has now even been honored on Chicago’s South Side.

There are so many prayers, conversations and sacrifices between a mother and her child that the world will never see.

That is the beauty of motherhood.

Our mothers can be the first people to see the greatness in us when we are still trying to see it in ourselves.

Heaven is at the foot of Momma’s door.

May Allah continue to bless the mothers who pray over their children, believe in them, correct them, protect them and remind them of who they are.

For the mothers who are still here, cherish them.

For the mothers who have transitioned, honor their legacy.

And for every child who has ever heard their mother say, “I believe in you”…

May you never forget the power of those words. by @therealbuzybee

I created this piece as a reflection of what exists beyond the skin and what lives within my true heart. For me, that is Allah. He is sufficient for me. He supplies my needs. He gives me more life.

Throughout the painting, I incorporated symbols inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery, including the sun and the ankh, the symbol of life. If you look closely, you can see the ankh coming from the sun and extending life to the figures below.

I was thinking about the ancient carvings of people giving praise to the sun and receiving the ankh, and I wanted to bring that symbolism into my own visual language. But for me, the deeper meaning goes beyond the imagery itself.

Life comes from Allah.

This piece is about looking beyond the physical body, beyond the skin, and into what truly gives us life.

He gives me life. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @therealbuzybee
