Mosswood Meltdown, Day 2 (Sunday) Recap

ā€˜It’s fitting that Mosswood Meltdown saved the female headliners for last, namely to close out the three-day festival on Sunday night. Before Bikini Kill took the stage for a rare appearance—in which Kathleen Hanna seemed to relish a return to this ultra-progressive environment she helped inspire—there was a joyful set from starstudded Ramones tribute band The Return of Jackie and Judy. Fred Armisen played drums, but the true stars were his Portlandia co-star and Sleater-Kinney leader Carrie Brownstein and her bandmate Corin Tucker, who brought a fresh, feminist take on the punk standards.

The group cut to the core of the Ramones’ enduring relevance, from the poignant changing of ā€œK-K-Kā€ to ā€œI-C-Eā€ during the chorus of ā€œThe KKK Took My Baby Awayā€ or dedicating nostalgic lament ā€œDo You Remember Rock n’ Roll Radio?ā€ to L7’s Jennifer Finch, who’d just passed away. It was a touching tribute from Brownstein, who drew parallels between the young female punks in attendance and her younger self seeing L7 live.

Perhaps most well-received was Peaches Christ’s Punk Pride revue earlier that afternoon. Drag performers belted out punk classics like ā€œGod Save the Queen,ā€ with renowned local filmmaker-musician H.P. Mendoza playing Tom Robinson Band’s 1978 UK anthem ā€œGlad to Be Gay.ā€

Although Mosswood Meltdown is in its 17th year, this was definitely the biggest one yet. While too many eyes and ears may threaten what makes it special in the first place, one look at the deservedly celebrated ADA section—for attendees with disabilities—would make anyone feel optimistic. Who knows: maybe the next expansion will be a comedy stage, where @ninagcomedian and her incredible roster of @comedianswithdisabilitiesact can bring the house down next year?’

Mosswood Meltdown, Pre-Party (Friday) & Day 1 (Saturday) Recap

ā€˜Iggy Pop’s headlining performance Saturday at Mosswood Meltdown was surprisingly moving. The 79-year-old ā€œgodfather of punkā€ no longer wields the iconic, toned torso of Raw Power’s album cover. But his worsening limp and spine curvature were merely new things for his famous physicality to transcend. He exuded his usual energy and appeared the ultimate rock survivor. His endurance—and that of beloved 80-year-old host and filmmaking icon John Waters—underscored the extremely inclusive spirit of the fest. Living out, proud and LOUD—for so long—was a powerful example, especially since all minorities continue to be under societal attack. Living well really is the best revenge.

Japanese punk quartet Otoboke Beaver’s incendiary set was the perfect Iggy segue, especially with singer Accorinrin’s Rollins and Danzig moves. The night before, North Carolina band Wednesday opened for the pre-party headliners with a solid set of Americana-tinged indie rock.

When Pavement took the stage Friday night, it was clear they considered this tour kickoff a ā€œhometown show.ā€ They were talkative, shouted out Stockton a lot, and tearfully dedicated ā€œSummer Babeā€ to deceased first drummer-producer Gary Young, who struggled with substance abuse. Later, during the famous final verse of ā€œRange Life,ā€ Stephen Malkmus omitted the Stone Temple Pilots dig, perhaps out of respect for their own gone-too-soon member who succumbed to addiction…

Whether a teachable moment or not, that choice perfectly punctuated the enduring statement of the punk-themed weekend: you can be your authentic self—truly and fully—without being a jerk. The noticeably polite crowd of rainbow-haired, multigenerational music fans proved this all weekend.’

One of the most impressive people I’ve ever met is @gmeline, who happens to be my former editor at the @northbaybohemian and @kqedarts. For the July issue of @marinmagazine, I interviewed the #santarosa-bred musician and senior arts & culture editor about ā€œDisturbing the Peace,ā€ a singular new exhibit he curated that explores the Sonoma County #punkrock scene of which he’s been an active part for decades.

See the profile link for a Q & A and rare set of photos from the @dead__kennedys’ classic 1985 show in @visit_novato. Then watch the video of Gabe’s behind-the-scenes tour (above). Learn about legendary #northbay shows by @greenday, @clubdevo, @ramones, @sublime, @operationivy89, @blackflagband and more. A pleasant revelation is that most local ā€œzinesā€ were women-produced, a trend that accelerated when the #riotgrrrl scene grew and @theebikinikill @mskathleenhanna played a backyard show in town.

The experiential exhibit only runs through August at the @museumsc. So don’t miss this completely unique, important event — and a chance to witness an exciting new creative arena for local renaissance man Gabe Meline. Henry Rollins @henryandheidi has been doing spoken word for decades, but how cool would it have been to see one of his first shows?

This week, as part of @cafilm ā€˜s #pridemonth programming at the Smith Rafael Film Center, acclaimed filmmaker @luchinafisher presented @thedadsfilm to an enthusiastic audience, who seemed to appreciate how important and timely the @dwyanewade -produced documentary is — not just for #trans and #lgbtqia folks but for ALL Americans. Joining her was ā€œDadā€ Wayne Maines (father of TV star @nicoleamaines of Supergirl fame), who shared personal anecdotes in a Q & A moderated by Marin County-based author/educator @jannabyoga , herself a parent of a trans child. Swipe through to hear their words, and check out ā€œThe Dadsā€ screening at @thecastro_sf TOMORROW as part of @framelinefest . This is an ā€œall hands on deckā€ moment for all allies. — David Sason @storiesforscreens taken in Smith Rafael Film Center by @therealdavidsason

Years ago (15!), when the @pixiesofficial played the @uptown_theatre_napa on their ā€œDootlittleā€ tour, I had the opportunity to interview the great #filipino guitarist @joeyalbertosantiago for the @northbaybohemian. Still one of my favorite chats, where we dove into his @thebeatles influence — and set the record straight re: that @blackfrancisofficial fax-machine breakup rumor…

As a proud #filipinoamerican, it’s been amazing to see the ascent of @brunomars, but for my generation, there’s nothing cooler than Joey Santiago’s guitar acrobatics inspiring #nirvana themselves and so many others.

Glad to see the Pixies going strong over 20 years after their reunion. Swipe to read the article. Happy #aapiheritagemonth. šŸ™šŸ½

THE WOMEN OF BOTTLEROCK 2026 @bottlerocknapavalley — Saturday edition 🤘- @therealdavidsason for @marinmagazine and @localgetaways
ā €
ā€œOne day in Napa, one throughline: female-fronted acts owned the Saturday lineup. @parisjackson kicked off the day with her ethereal rock, while @thereturnofjackieandjudy revived @ramones classics with a superstar lineup including @sordociego Fred Armisen and his @visitfromportlandia partner @carrie_rachel from @sleater_kinney. The Bay Area’s own @djumami held it down between sets, and @joanjett reminded everyone why she’s the blueprint.

The highlight of the day were the Monterrey, Mexico sisters in @thewarningrockband. The hard rock trio proved the future of rock is in very good hands with an incendiary set that justified all the hype.
ā €
I also caught up with local radio stars @chastalynn & @babyhuey83 of @1077thebone to chat everyone’s new favorite band (The Warning, of course) and how BottleRock has always made space for women onstage. The hilarious broadcast duo @chastaandhuey also revealed the relative freedoms of podcasting vs. terrestrial radioā€¦ā€
