We’re proud to announce that Dr. Jeff Block’s hybrid: Anthurium ‘Michelle’ was a 2026 “Plant of the Year” featured finalist at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show. This prestigious annual gathering is recognized as the world’s finest showcase for the breeding of exceptional hybrids.

Anthurium ‘Michelle’ is a velvet leaf foliage anthurium that has gained international attention as a popular new houseplant. It’s easy to grow in indoors where temperatures and humidity conditions are comfortable for both people… and DocBlock anthuriums! ‘Michelle’ has new leaves that emerge displaying dark burgundy-purple colors with contrasting silver veins. As they grow, the leaves change to lavender before evolving to nearly black hues. As additional leaves emerge, the older leaves eventually mature to dark shades of green with mesmerizing white vein patterns.
The distinctive reverse side of the leaf has been additionally bred for a “negative” image compared to the front side.
Dr. Block was fascinated by the petiole’s and vein’s red-purple color that appears to “bleed” into smaller branching veins displayed against the leaf’s lighter colored verso. Indeed, this observation intrigued his physician’s curiosity comparing the human blood circulation’s architecture and his hybrid’s dynamic fluid distribution.

Anthuriums can be wonderfully exotic houseplants!

You might be surprised to learn that I don't grow any plants whatsoever INSIDE our home! Living in South Florida, we're blessed to gaze out windows and enjoy subtropical flora thriving around us... all year!

We recently visited several friends' homes that showcase how nicely velvet leaf anthuriums can thrive... indoors! Our hybrids can be grown very nicely in the same living conditions that we find comfortable!

Two easy numbers to remember for your indoor anthuriums are: "60" & "80".
Indoor temperatures ranging between 60 to 80 degrees (F); and humidity levels ranging between 60 and 80 percent (%) are wonderful for most velvet leaf hybrids.

Two very different obsessions. One frame. 🌿🎯

The Springfield Armory (@springfieldarmoryinc ) Kuna equipped with an EOTECH (@eotech ) holographic sight, sharing the spotlight with a stunning Anthurium Brielle by @therealdocblock

One is a product of precision engineering. The other, decades of passion, genetics, and selective breeding.

In a world increasingly dominated by AI, algorithms, and screens, I find myself appreciating the things that keep us connected to the physical world.

Different worlds. Same appreciation for craftsmanship, detail, and beauty.

Now the real question… which one caught your attention first? 👀

Swapping horsepower for leaf power. 🚗➡️🌱

Detroit might have built the assembly line. Inside 🧚‍♀️Rare Plant Fairy’s showroom, it’s strictly Plant City🪴.

So proud to see our babies thriving in such good hands. But even more grateful for friendships built on shared soil 💚✨#docblockanthurium #rareplantfairy #plantparents #anthuriumaddict #anthuriummichelle by @therealdocblock

We often look 👀 outside of ourselves for energy, clarity, and motivation. But just like nature 🌱, everything you need to flourish is already 🧵woven within you! ✨

True growth doesn’t require forcing. It’s alignment, patience, and honoring your inner fire 🔥 .
Direct your⚡️energy towards what grounds you.
💧Water your own roots, and trust your inner strength! ♥️ Michelle#docblockanthurium #plantparents #anthuriumaddict #rareplantcollector #mindfullife by @therealdocblock

You know that feeling when you realize that you need a trim✂️, but you hesitate because you’re attached to the length?
I feel the same way when I need to trim anthuriums🪴.
Flowering takes lots of metabolic energy, and pollination to make seeds (babies!) takes even more. By clipping these inflorescences today, that power ⚡️is redirected straight back into producing larger, stronger, more resilient foliage.🌱#docblockanthurium #plantparents #anthuriumaddict #healthandwellneswithplants #anthuriummichelle by @therealdocblock

My absolute favorite tropical tree: Ceiba speciosa.
The “Silk-Floss Tree” 😍
This specimen was the biggest I’ve ever seen! Doc Block said he planted it over 30 years ago. 🌳😍

Some plant experiences stay with you long after you leave. 🌿

I had the incredible opportunity to spend time with Dr. Jeff Block and Michelle at Block Botanical Gardens in Miami, getting a personal look at a collection built through decades of passion, knowledge, and dedication to tropical plants.

For anyone who loves Anthuriums and aroids, getting to walk through Doc Block’s collection, hear the stories behind the plants, and learn directly from someone who has contributed so much to Anthurium breeding was incredibly special.

But what I’ll remember just as much as the plants is the generosity. Jeff and Michelle welcomed us into their home, shared their time and knowledge, and made the entire experience feel personal.

I went there excited to see some extraordinary plants. I left even more grateful for the people behind them. 💚

Jeff and Michelle, thank you for opening your home and your garden to us. This is one I won’t forget. 🌿
