This is not a suit. This is THE suit I wore 25 years ago today. I could not and will not part with it. For those of us in New York City at the time, you will never forget that day. I keep hearing this but it really was a gorgeous fall like morning. Crisp enough that this suit would keep you warm but you didn’t need more. I was a junior banker and since I was junior, needed to be in the office by 7am. My tiny studio was on 15th and 6th. I’d walk across 5th Ave to Union Square to take the subway to 52nd. I’d see the World Trade Center Twin Towers every day. I’d see the lights on at the top, as that was where traders from Cantor and Morgan Stanley were. Prime office space. I was envious. I got in to my cube, settled in with my two huge monitors and then I later heard my colleague say “someone crashed into the World Trade Center!!!” Back then tech isn’t what it is now. So there was an information vacuum. We all (the world did) thought it was some idiot in a Cessna that got lost and somehow hit the building. But then there was another hit of the second Tower. The explosion was too large. That was a fuel explosion. My mom, just before leaving for work called me nearly in tears. As everyone not from the City that has loved ones in the City tends to have no idea where they are. I told her I was well uptown. I then walked down to our trading floor with my colleagues. Liz knows! We watched with the world what happened next. Hours later I walked home. I saw countless people walking north in a zombie state, covered in ash. I went home, turned on my tiny 12 inch TV and found out what was happening. I’m fortunate that I didn’t have loved ones directly impacted by this tragedy. I am also fortunate that everyone that went through this shares the same sentiment. I still haven’t been to the 9/11 museum. I don’t want to go. I won’t.
