The journey has been a long one. When my mom passed away in November, my brother and I made it our mission to ensure we’d honor her incredible legacy. She helped thousands of charity runners for two decades achieve their marathon dreams at the Boston Marathon and she supported dozens of remarkable nonprofits throughout her life. She lit up every room she entered. She was a force of nature.

We had huge shoes to fill. But with the help of our wives, our father, and a select group of incredible peers (the Peeps, as mom called them), we spent the last six months answering the call. Many long runs and fundraisers later, we made it to our finish line. The result: 6.6 million dollars raised for 40 local nonprofits. 500 runners achieving their marathon dreams. And my third boston completed.

There were so many moments from this weekend that I’ll never forget. Meeting the twins Fati and Mariem, who I ran for on behalf of Justice Health Initiative (A big thank you to all who donated!). To celebrating my mom’s visionary legacy at the B.A.A. Gives Back event. To receiving the first ever Susan Hurley Award at the CharityTeams brunch, given to me by my brother Ryan. When I finally got to run the race — I was joined by my dad, brother, sister, and college roommate James. I’d nursed an ankle injury for the past month and struggled through much of the race. At mile 23, feeling my worst, I hoped for some sort of sign… Mom always told me to look out for the signs. And then there it was. A stranger in the crowd had made a literal sign: “Your Mom is proud.” From there on out, my energy was renewed. Many steps and tears later I crossed the finish line. My brother was there to give me my medal. And Kristin was there to embrace me. I am so thankful to everyone who supported me in this journey. It means everything.

My mom was an angel on this earth. Though she’s gone, she’s changed thousands of lives, but none more than mine. I’m so proud of the life she led and lucky to live in her light. I love you Mom! 🥲 by @therealmcgills

Tonight! Season 1 of Neighbors on HBO comes to a monumental end!

The show has taken the world by storm and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work on it with so many mad, beautiful geniuses — directors @dredford_ & @harrisonfishman, producers @rachelxwalden & @bombvest, and an all star story producing team led by @harleigh.shaw, @lilredford, @zakir_herman, and @christianhitehansen.

Hours hunting down neighbor disputes in small claims databases and basements (see pic of a few of the hundreds of case files to prove it) and making friends with the voluntarily unclothed really paid off!

Nudists, Cat Ladies, Beach Defenders, Alien Skin Suits — what more could you want from a show?
Season 2 here we come!

I've been obsessed with the world of Santa Claus since 2018, when I was at an uptown dive bar and met Billy, a man who'd once lost everything - his job, wife, custody of his son. He'd gained weight and stopped shaving too. On a tip from a friend, he applied for a part-time gig working as a Macy's Santa. Suddenly, people were *happy* to see Billy. Every day, hundreds of smiling kids put him back together, piece by piece. The job saved his life.

I became obsessed with an idea: that in a world where Santa might be the last patriarchal figure we all agree to love, playing Kris Kringle is a way for broken middle-aged men to fix their lives.

Billy didn't want to be the subject of my story. And so I spent years casting about for the right profile subject.

All across America, the inestimable @therealmcgills and I found them: strip club DJs, Iraq War vets with PTSD, former addicts, grieving fathers. Men lost and now found in the red suit.

But all roads kept leading back to Macy's Santaland, which is the home of the One True Santa, as any fan of "Miracle on 34th Street" knows. On a sweltering summer day in 2023, I met a former Macy's executive named Bob Rutan for lunch at Balthazar. Perhaps he could help me find a Santa subject. As we ate, Bob revealed that he too had played Santa before his ill-fated corporate run.

The man's stories! They blew me away -- especially his 1991 visit with two little girls in ratty coats. For a few minutes half a lifetime ago, Bob *really was* Santa Claus. It became known in Macy's lore simply as The Story. I couldn't get it out of my head, or my heart.

Two years later, here's my latest: YES, BOB, THERE IS SANTA CLAUS.

Thanks to @aaronrichterstudio for Bob's incredible portrait, @michaeljsebastian for taking a chance on another DGH story for @esquire, and the former Macy's Santas and crew members who drew back the curtain and let me into their world.

Most of all, thank you to @iambobrutan for sharing your life story, warts and all. You're a very special person.

Oh, and you'll have to read to the end of the piece to hear The Story.

The last two months have been the hardest—and somehow most meaningful—of my life.

When my mom passed, it not only left an emotional hole, but a physical one. For years, my mom was the engine behind many charity running programs. She tirelessly supported dozens of nonprofits and the runners that trained and fundraised for the Boston Marathon in their honor. Since losing her, I’ve spent the past two months learning about her work from the inside—supporting the runners she loved so deeply and doing my best to carry what she built forward. It has been an all consuming endeavor. But one I’m proud of. Because I’ve gotten to know my mom through the countless lives she touched.

A few weeks into the job, I met Alex Gitungano, the founder of Justice Health Initiative. Alex shared with me another powerful sentiment - mom had been fighting tooth and nail to find marathon bibs for JHI so they could continue providing essential healthcare to children in need—children like conjoined twins Fati and Mariem, who are in need of a life-saving internal separation. “Your mother was always checking in on the girls,” Alex told me with a warm smile. He showed me their photos - the picture of innocence. And in that moment, I knew mom was pushing me to “be the change I wish to see in the world.”

My mom made every effort a personal battle for good. I cannot think of a better way to walk in my mother’s light than to support JHI, Alex, Fati and Mariem. So in honor of mom, I’ll be dusting off the ole sneaks and puttering along those 26.2 mile in April once again. I always used to joke that I had to run Boston to “get in the will.” Now, when I lace up, it’s to bring me closer to her.

Please consider supporting me in my journey to uplift those in need and truly follow in mom’s footsteps.

Cali, you poured so much love into my heart these past few weeks and I can’t help but feel we’ve missed a trick living this far east.

Jet-lagged and missing the pacific coast, big time.

Thankfully I have just a couple of photographs of these here babes to keep the dream alive.

M & K, we love you.

Kristin is 28! It’s been a heck of a year for this lovely lady! From making movies, to driving, to surgeries… Words cannot express how much she means to me. She is constantly kind, compassionate, funny - and did I mention sweet? Every day is an adventure. And I cannot wait for many, many more with her. (No, she did not threaten me at knife point to write this post. That would be crazzzy!) love you, kc! 🫶🔪🫠🥸(sos)🤠😍❤️ by @therealmcgills
