THE SCIENCE OF COSMETOLOGY

You thought we were “just doing hair.”

Let’s talk about what is actually happening.

🧪 CHEMISTRY
Haircolor, lighteners, relaxers, permanent waving and smoothing services all involve chemical reactions. We work with pH, oxidation, reduction, concentration, timing and chemical compatibility.

🧬 BIOLOGY
Hair is biological material. Understanding the hair shaft, scalp, follicles, keratin, bonds, growth cycles and how the body responds to chemical services matters.

⚗️ CHEMICAL FORMULATION
A color formula isn’t a recipe you blindly follow. We consider existing pigment, underlying pigment, artificial color, porosity, density, texture, developer and the desired result.

🔬 MATERIAL SCIENCE
Hair has physical properties. Elasticity, tensile strength, porosity, moisture, friction and structural damage all affect how it behaves and what it can safely withstand.

📐 MATHEMATICS & GEOMETRY
Haircutting involves angles, elevation, distribution, proportion, balance, weight and spatial relationships.

🔥 PHYSICS
Heat, tension, airflow, friction and mechanical force all change how hair behaves.

🧠 DIAGNOSTIC REASONING
Before we touch someone’s hair, we’re gathering information, identifying variables, predicting outcomes and deciding what is possible without compromising the hair.

And then we have to do all of that while communicating with an actual human being.

This is why I will never accept the idea that cosmetology is somehow an intellectually inferior profession.

Cosmetology is applied science performed with human hands.

The fact that we create something beautiful doesn’t make the science underneath it any less real.

Maybe the problem isn’t that hairstylists aren’t educated.

Maybe we’ve spent too long failing to recognize what we’re actually being educated to do.
