A nearly two-year legal battle — and an even longer organizing fight — culminated in triumph last Thursday in Tampa. Congratulations to the IBT leadership, namely GP O’Brien and GST Zuckerman, and the Brewery, Bakery & Soft Drink Conference Director, Jeff Padellaro, whose support was unwavering. Thank you to our star expert witness, Attorney Gabe Dumont, a wise and invaluable mentor, and all who had a hand in this great victory, including Director of Organizing, Chris Rosell, and his team. Most especially, congratulations to the courageous rank-and-file members in Florida, who did not bend one inch to Breakthru or the National Right to Work Legal “Defense” Foundation against long odds and in the face of unrelenting pressure and money.

Representing Locals 79, 385, 947, 991, and the IBT in this matter alongside Gabe and our General Counsel, Dave Suetholz, has been an honor and a privilege. Without doubt, the Breakthru Florida campaign and trying this decertification case marks the most significant effort I have been involved with in my career practicing union-side labor law.

Last month, the @nyteamsters honored me with an invitation to speak to — and, as importantly, learn from — their annual conference, located in beautiful Lake George, NY. Special thanks to Tommy Gesualdi and Tom Quackenbush for inviting me and for the warm hospitality. Of course, I must also thank my friends from across the Empire State, characters one and all (especially the fellas of Local Union 456), for embracing this son of Boston.

I conclude as I did in Lake George by leaning on the wisdom of an iconic New Yorker, the late Governor Mario Cuomo, who urged: “We must make the American people hear our ‘Tale of Two Cities.’ We must convince them that we don’t have to settle for two cities, that we can have one city, indivisible, shining for all of its people.”

MY STATEMENT ON MASSGOP EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOHN R. MILLIGAN — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

“For years, John Milligan dedicated himself to the MassGOP fully and without trepidation. Under his stewardship as Executive Director, the Party won key victories, welcomed new voters, and restored much of its power. Thanks in large part to John’s leadership and preternatural ability to move forward through obstacles of all sorts, the MassGOP regained real respect as an institution.
