The Power Plant — FOGO is a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Sharon Lockhart, featuring work made over the course of four summers on Newfoundland’s Fogo Island. The exhibition consists of a series of photographs, collectively entitled “Fogo Island Portrait Studio”, that pictures the island’s young residents, alongside “WINDWARD”, a film installation featuring the same protagonists that brings to life the island’s striking geological formations, unique climate, and austere beauty. These works build on core themes that have continued to define Lockhart’s career: an exploration of place, a durational approach to attention, and a long-term commitment to those who appear before her lens.

WINDWARD is co-commissioned and co-produced by Shorefast/Fogo Island Arts, The Vega Foundation, and the National Gallery of Canada, with the support of The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery and Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. by @therealshasha

Installed LUNCH BREAK show at SF MoMA for a week with Richard Serra installing his show at the same time. The two of us on one floor. I remember being scared to meet him, hearing he was tough and also because his interviews and work were so important to me. He would come to observe my negotiations with the museum (they altered Frank and Ravi’s design). Then he came daily and talked with me about shipyards, steel, labor, and still life painting. It was very special - tender even. When our shows opened he came and told me “you did the right thing” (having museum fix the architecture). He gave me a book signed with massive black sharpie and big signature. In it — “your exhibition looks great”. I just pulled his books to look for an essay and remembered this time. He was a real giant but a gentle one too. RIP Richard by @therealshasha

“Travelogue” was Rauschenberg’s first collaboration with Cunningham and Cage since 1964. His design, called “Tantric Geography,” featured a row of wooden chairs mounted on white platforms separated by bicycle wheels. At the beginning of the dance this was dragged on stage by a rope, with the dancers seated on the chairs. Over the course of the dance, garments and accessories were added to the basic costumes of brightly colored leotards and tights, including large color-wheel fans, tin cans, banners, flags, and chiffon scarves. The dance had an episodic structure, with the dancers engaged in a series of antic encounters and deadpan entanglements. John Cage’s music, “Telephone and Birds,” incorporated recordings of bird songs and telephone calls made to numbers with recorded messages. ⚡️ Trisha Brown “Set and Reset” was collaboration with Rauschenberg. Rauschenberg worked on the set and the costumes, and the score was by the artist Lori Anderson. Rauschenberg created a sculptural object that he called Elastic Carrier, and it hung above the dancers. It was stretched with a kind of fabric so images could be projected onto it. The images were stock footage that he found along with found sound, and he edited it together in this mix. by @therealshasha
