📖✨ CURRENTLY READING ✨📖

As we dive into fall 🍂📚, I’m excited to get into a new fantasy/romantasy world! So, I’m currently reading The Heart Trials by J. Elle. 👀 I’ve read Wings of Ebony by J. Elle, so I’m excited to see what she has in store with this one!

FOLDED REVIEW 📚📝✨

📖 It’s Only Dancing by Jasmine Guillory
Genre: Young Adult (YA) Romance💕
Rating: 3.5 ⭐️

✨ Thoughts ✨

After enjoying Jasmine Guillory’s adult romance books, I was excited to see what she would do with her YA debut. Overall, I thought this was a lighthearted and heartwarming YA read. As a YA book lover, I appreciated the different threads throughout the story, especially:

🌱 Coming of Age: I enjoyed watching Kat figure herself out, make new friends, and navigate new relationships as she grows into herself.

💃🏾 Dance & Self-Reconnection: It was nice to see Kat’s journey of finding her way back to something she once loved and reconnecting with a part of herself in the process.

🪞 Body Image & Dance Representation: As a former high school dancer, I connected with Kat’s experiences with body image and the expectations around what a dancer is supposed to look like.

💕 Romance: I thought the chemistry between Kat and Jordan was so cute! I especially loved how caring and reassuring Jordan was toward Kat throughout the story.

My main critique was that the plot felt a little disjointed at times, and some of the conflicts felt like they moved a little too quickly. But that didn’t take away from the character development or the romantic pacing, which I thought it was well-executed.

Overall, this was a cute YA romance that touched on dance, identity, friendships, and coming of age. I definitely think Jasmine Guillory needs to write another YA book pretty soon! 🤗📚

Honestly, one thing I love about Nigerian literature is the RANGE. There’s something for every mood, age, and reader. Baby Rose’s new album has been on repeat for me for the past two months, and y’all I really enjoy this album😭. The songs, the features, the production: it’s been one of those albums that’s on replay✨

HAPPY BOOKSTAVERSARY TO THE REFLECTION FOLD 🎉📚🎂!!

Last year, I decided to create this little space on Beyoncé’s internet where I could talk about books, share my thoughts, and connect with other readers/bookish-lovers.

I didn’t really know what the page would become. I just knew I wanted a space that felt like me and gave me room to read, reflect, be curious, and share the things I love. And somehow, one year later, here we are. 🥹

I’ve met so many wonderful readers/bookish lovers, discovered amazing authors and books, and watched this page grow in ways I never expected. Of course, I’ve had so much fun along the way💃🏾!

Thank you to everyone who has been here, whether you’ve followed from the beginning, found me recently, shared a recommendation, chatted with me about a book, or simply liked a post. I appreciate you more than you know❤️.

✨Found some new cool fantasy books! Fantasy was my go-to genre as a kiddo, so it feels good to get back into a genre that started my love for reading💫

✨After being in a romance reading slump for the past two months, I finally feel like I’m back now 😂💕

✨Ayra Starr (our Sabi Girl) was not playing with her StarrGirl, album, because it was on repeat non-stop💜

✨Still finding ways to read across different genres and just have fun with my reading. Sometimes you really do just need to switch things up!

Divine Oaths by Elizabeth Agyemang

✨Thoughts✨

Welcome to Westfield, where secret societies, generational curses, magic, power, and ghost stories come together. 👀 I typically enjoy a good dark academia magic system, but this sometimes leaned more toward the gothic mystery side, which kept me intrigued. 🕯️🔮

I really enjoyed Sianna’s arc as she tried to solve the curse, unlock her magic, and navigate grief. And y’all, this generational curse had my girl in a FRENZY at times, especially as she developed her love for Kasem❤️‍🔥.

Westfield’s magic system and world-building were definitely highlights for me. This is a slow-burn storyline, but I found myself waiting to see what would happen next with the curse, the secret societies, and Sianna’s journey to uncover the mystery. The plot also took some unpredictable turns because I was NOT expecting that connection. 😭

I did have some critiques, though. I wanted more character development and backstory for some of the secondary characters, especially Honey and Liam, because I felt like they were introduced pretty quickly. I also wanted more development between Sianna and Jojo, as their relationship felt a little disjointed at times.

Overall, I really enjoyed the world-building and storytelling, and I’m looking forward to reading more of Ms. Agyemang’s YA books and future adult fantasy books! ✨

The Free Verse Society by Delali Adjoa

✨Thoughts✨

Okay, wow and wow!! Ms. Adjoa’s pen was WORKING when she wrote Jae and Derek’s story. I loved how emotionally immersive this YA romance was and how it explored grief, loss, finding your voice, family dynamics, cultural identity, poetry, and a little forbidden romance.

The Free Verse Society (the poetry reading club) became such an important safe space for Jae, Derek, and their peers to share their stories, process their experiences, and figure out where they belonged. I especially loved the character development and the secondary characters, along with the poems immersed throughout the story. Also, I appreciated the book exploring Jae and Derek’s Ghanaian and Indian cultural backgrounds, respectively.

I would’ve loved more of Derek’s POV. I felt like we spent more time in Jae’s world, and because both characters were so emotionally complex, I think a little more balance between their perspectives could have made the story even stronger. Overall, this was a beautiful and layered YA romance, and I’m excited to read more of Delali Adjoa’s work! ✨

On Saturday, in honor of Bookstore Romance Day, I made a stop by Why Choose (@whychoose.tucson), a romance pop-up, for their Swoon event. 💕📚

I’ve seen their pop-up a couple of times when I was living in Tucson, so it was nice to stop by again and check out their selections. I love seeing a space that intentionally makes room for historically marginalized and underrepresented voices in romance, and they uplift indie and traditionally published authors, with a focus on BIPOC and queer authors.

Their book selections are so cute and good as hell. 😂 And of course, I came home with a stack. If you’re in Tucson or visiting, definitely give Why Choose a follow and keep an eye out for their upcoming pop-ups and events. They’re doing some really cool work for the local romance bookish community. 💕

Yesterday, I made a day trip down to Tucson to celebrate the grand reopening of Homeward Books Collective (@homeward.books)📚✨🎉!!

It was really nice to revisit the bookstore and see them enter this new chapter. The new space is welcoming, spacious, and has plenty to explore, with a diverse selection of new and used books across genres. I also appreciated seeing their mission reflected throughout the space. As a worker-owned bookstore, they center queer and BIPOC authors and carry books that engage with abolition, feminism, social justice, and other systems of change.

Thank you, Homeward Books Collective, for your continued contributions to Tucson’s literary community. Congratulations on the reopening and this next chapter 🎉!! And, of course, I couldn’t leave without a little stack of my own. 👀📚

MAY–JULY FOLD (WRAP-UP) ✨📚🎶

✨ 3-month update: Y’all, these months were full of transitions, but I’m grateful for the celebrations and milestones of my people.

✨ After living in Tucson for 10 years, I moved back to Phoenix to be closer to family and start a new chapter. (But I’ll miss Tucson for sure 😭!)

✨ My beautiful friends graduated from pharmacy and medical school, and now I have doctor friends lmao.

✨ Started adding my music listens and watch recaps because I don’t only consume books.

✨ Exploring coffee shops around me because a girl needs a good matcha and iced tea lemonade.

✨ Deep in the fantasy books because your girl hit a romance fatigue.

✨ Continuing to practice gratitude and rest (this one needs more work 😂).
