Elliott Smith – ”Elliott Smith” (1995).

I used blue embroidery thread and a few thousand tiny beads to recreate the cover of this album. An album which I love deeply. It is sad and dark, yet so beautiful and vivid. Nobody could make an acoustic guitar sing quite like Elliott Smith could. And his vocals on this album are borderline hypnotic. It is pretty much the perfect singer/songwriter album.

The album cover itself was actually a xeroxed-in-blue-copy of a photograph taken by JJ Gonson in 1992 – picturing an art installation on the street outside a museum in Prague. Check out her work, she has so many cool photos not only of Elliott Smith but of other icons such as Kurt Cobain, and the grunge and punk scene back in the 80’s and 90’s, among other things – she is awesome and you can find her at @jj_gonson_photo 📸🔥

Deftones – ”Deftones” (2003).

This album is dark, heavy, angry, sad…you know, all that good stuff that I love 🖤😅

I used 8,584 tiny beads (yes, I counted them! 🤪) to recreate the cover art.

Although right now I’m kind of upset with Chino Moreno and the boys for not making it to my neck of the woods on their current tour, it still felt awesome to re-connect with their music and this underrated killer album.

Nirvana – ”In Utero” (1993).

I used thousands of beads to recreate this iconic album cover, and put it on an oversized t-shirt.

I have a very long and complex relationship with Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, full of love and hurt. It’s all tied in with my mental health battles and my teenage years and all kinds of messed-up stuff.

Did you ever have one of those bands? One that helped you through a really dark time in your life, a band that you loved so deeply, that you STILL love, but where the connection between the music and that particular part of your past becomes so strong that hearing their songs again creates this visceral reaction, to the point that listening to them becomes almost unbearable?

That’s Nirvana to me.

But I’ll get into all that some other time.

Today, let’s just say they remain one of the greatest bands of all time. And I’m happy I’m starting to be able to listen to them again without entirely reliving my past.

I used about 1,800 tiny beads to recreate an iconic piece of Smashing Pumpkins history…and put it on this old silver jacket!

If you’ve been to a Pumpkins concert in the last 30 years or so, you’ve no doubt seen tons of ”Zero” shirts in the crowd. Billy Corgan first introduced it in the ”Bullet with Butterfly Wings” music video I believe, and he also wears it in the very cool band photo in the ”Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” booklet.

And even though the band held a literal funeral concert for Zero as Billy’s alter ego earlier this year, I don’t think you’ll stop seeing the shirts anytime soon. After all, the Pumpkins are still selling them. And Zero tracksuit jackets. And Zero snapback hats. And Zero baby onesies. And Zero plush robes. And…well, you get it.

It remains to be seen if they’ll be offering Zero bead embroidery anytime soon, though 😜

Elliott Smith – ”Figure 8” (2000).

I used about 7,000 tiny beads to recreate the iconic cover art of this fantastic record; the last studio album released during Elliott Smith’s lifetime.

A lot of fans know the story behind the album cover. Autumn de Wilde took the photograph of Elliott standing in front of that now legendary mural on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. The mural itself is actually an S, painted for the audio/video repair shop ”Solutions!” back in the late 80s.

I took some liberties in recreating the cover art, including removing the letters. Would have needed microscopic beads to make them fit… 😅 I did the whole thing on a long sleeve t-shirt. I’ll wear it someday and see if I can get a good picture of it.

🍁 WEATHER ALERT 🍁
Nine Inch Nails cardigan season has officially begun!

I made this crochet cardigan last year, fresh off the high and pure inspiration of seeing the ”Peel it Back” tour premiere in Dublin. One of the very best concerts I’ve been to in recent years, maybe ever. Trent Reznor remains a musical genius and an absolute force of energy and emotion. (I also loved the way they incorporated Boys Noize into the set. Nine Inch Noize rocks!)

Lately I’ve mostly been sharing my bead embroidery on here, but crochet was actually my first crafting love. I started about eight years ago during a very dark time of my life. Crochet and amigurumi helped me channel my relentless brain activity onto something positive and creative. It would not be an exaggeration to say that it helped save my life.

And also, being able to make your own NIN stuff when you’ve blown through the merch budget is pretty rad 😄

Happy Birthday to one of the best albums ever made!
On this date 26 years ago, Radiohead released ”Kid A”.

I don’t have a lot of cool or rare stuff in my CD collection, but this one’s kinda fun. It’s a promo packaging of ”Kid A” that got sent out to music critics and the like ahead of the official album release.

The accusatory ”How will you sleep? When things turn nasty how will you explain yourself?” text, which on this album cover is attached to some facts about global warming, was first actually posted by Thom Yorke on Radiohead’s official website several months earlier in a different context. Thom, who was engaged in the Jubilee 2000/Drop the Debt campaign, was fuming at G8 leaders for their failure to provide meaningful debt relief to the world’s poorest countries.

The album cover also has the classic Stanley Donwood modbear on it. As some of you know, I absolutely adore this little creature. And have spent a lot of time making my own bears.

In the third picture, I took the liberty of photographing every modbear I’ve made so far. Some crochet, some bead embroidery. There’s a couple of handbags, a few bag charms, a hairclip, and two scenes from the ”Kid A” promotional video “Blips” recreated with tiny beads.

So, this next part is dedicated to my dad.

I used 683 tiny beads to recreate the cover of one of his favorite albums, ”The Dark Side of the Moon” (1973), on this old baseball cap.

When I grew up, Pink Floyd was always playing around the house. My parents were big fans, and my father especially. Even though I myself was more into grunge and indie rock and things like that as I started becoming serious about music, Pink Floyd undoubtedly has had an influence on me. Most of all I am thankful to have grown up in a home where my parents cared about music and listened to GOOD music.

So thank you dad, for the love and passion for music that you instilled in me from a very young age.

I did this bead embroidery directly onto the hat … and it worked surprisingly well! So shoutout to New Era for making sturdy, embroidery-friendly baseball caps I guess 😂

The previous bands I did – Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Deftones and the band you guys voted in; Linkin Park – were all done as separate patches and then attached to the hat.

I just can’t stop making Radiohead modbears! 😅
This is the smallest one so far, made with only about 600 of my very tiniest beads.

I haven’t decided what to do with this one yet. I might put it on the baseball cap I’ve posted on here previously. Or I might do something else. As always, open to suggestions 🤓

Linkin Park joins Deftones, Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana on this old, all-black baseball cap which I’m giving a complete makeover. 🤓🧵🪡🤘

I’ve been doing bead embroidery of logos, mascots etc. from some of my favorite bands and putting them on this hat. In doing so, I’ve also gotten a ton of fun suggestions from you guys. In my previous post I took the four most frequently mentioned and/or liked bands from the comments, and put up a poll asking which band I should do next.

Now, the people have spoken 😄 … and Linkin Park won in a landslide! They got 47% of the votes, ahead of Radiohead (24%), My Chemical Romance (19%) and Green Day (10%).

There’s still a loooot of room on this hat, so if you have anything else you would like to see on there…let me know! 🖤

Radiohead and Stanley Donwood did so much cool artwork during the ”Kid A” and ”Amnesiac” era. Here’s another favorite of mine, one of the crying minotaurs. Recreated with about 4,400 tiny beads.

Funnily enough, it bears a striking resemblance to what I’ll look like standing empty-handed after the 2027 tour ticket lottery! Or, if I do win, what I’ll look like when I start doing the budget calculations and realize the impossibility of a trip to Japan…
