“Feet aren’t the sexiest beauty topic, but they carry you your whole life; you can’t replace them, so you have to care for them. I’ve ordered every foot cream I could find and hated them all—they were greasy, sticky, badly scented, or poorly packaged,” says Therese M’Boungoubaya (@theresembg). So she made her own, a thick but silky concoction made with safou oil that became the hero of her brand @kobaskincare. During lockdown, @theresembg got fed up with her perpetually dry feet and ordered every foot cream on the market. None ticked every box. So she decided to make her own. This wasn’t her first rodeo. Years earlier, she’d built and sold a subscription beauty box brand, then sharpened her craft at companies like L’Oréal. So when she spotted a gap for a premium footcare product, she knew exactly what to do. The result is @kobaskincare and her secret weapon is safou, a nourishing oil pressed from a fruit that Thérèse grew up eating in Congolese cooking, but which is almost unheard of in Western beauty.
