I also really liked the team around her. Their chemistry felt natural, and I loved how they were there for each other. I especially appreciated that they werenโ€™t written as perfect characters. Getting to see their vulnerable sides made me more invested in them. I also enjoyed the killerโ€™s backstory and learning how he came to be. I just wish we got a few chapters from his perspective because I would have loved to get deeper into his mind. This was my first book by the author and the first in the series, and Iโ€™m definitely continuing! The pacing kept me hooked until the end. My first book by her was Dead of Winter, and I enjoyed it a lot. The Haunting of Ashburn House is my second one. Iโ€™m a sucker for a good olโ€™ haunted house story, so I was really excited when this was chosen as our September BOTM by one of my IG book clubs. I liked learning about the houseโ€™s history and what happened to the previous owners. I also liked how the story wrapped up and how things turned out for the characters, both alive and dead. But everything in between wasโ€ฆ..meh. I wanted to feel more invested in what was happening, and while there were some creepy moments, it didnโ€™t quite give me the spooky experience I was hoping for. Still, Iโ€™m not giving up! Haha! Lilaโ€™s family perfectly showed that Filipino value of putting family first, and it was so nice to see that reflected throughout the story. I also loved that the author included a glossary for readers who may not understand some of the Filipino words used in the book. And the Filipino food? It seriously made me SO HUNGRY. I swear, youโ€™re going to be craving Filipino food while reading this! As for the mystery, I honestly wanted more of Lila and her friends doing their amateur sleuthing. There were parts of the mystery surrounding the death of one of the characters that confused me. I liked that I couldnโ€™t figure out who the suspect was, but when the reveal finally cameโ€ฆ I was just like, โ€œOh. Okay?โ€ But overall, I still want to continue the series. This is only the first book, so Iโ€™m definitely willing to give the next one a chance and see where Lilaโ€™s story goes! ๐ŸŒณ ๐๐จ๐จ๐ค ๐‘๐ž๐ฏ๐ข๐ž๐ฐ ๐ŸŒณ ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐”๐ง๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ฐ๐ง ๐›๐ฒ ๐‘๐ข๐ฅ๐ž๐ฒ ๐’๐š๐ ๐ž๐ซ I love the plot and how suspenseful and twisty this book was. There were quite a handful of characters, but they were still distinct enough from one another. I liked that the book also tackled some real-life issues in the acting industry. On the other hand, everything in between, from the beginning, felt like a whirlwind. Not necessarily because of how fast the story moved, but more because of how a whirlwind makes you feelโ€”dizzy and disoriented. There were so many mysteries, clues, and things happening along the way, but most of the explanations came toward the end. They felt so jam-packed together that I barely had any room to breathe, let alone enough time to process everything. For what itโ€™s worth, this was a good, decent locked-room (or should I say, locked-island?) mystery. I think I just went into it expecting something different, and in the end, it didnโ€™t quite give me what I was looking for. McFadden book, and surprisingly, I really liked it! Like her other books, this was a quick and bingeable read. One thing I usually struggle with in Freidaโ€™s books is her female leads because I sometimes find them too gullible, but I actually really liked Tegan and the rest of the cast. Iโ€™ve seen reviews saying the scenes were repetitive, but I actually think that worked for a snowbound, locked-room mystery. Tegan was heavily pregnant, had a fractured ankle, and was confined to the basement, so the limited setting made sense. What I enjoyed was how the situation slowly escalated from seemingly normal to completely disturbing. I also think this book tackles more serious themes than the other books Iโ€™ve read by Freida. This book felt a little too close to home because I take the train almost every day! You could just be going about your normal day when suddenly, an emergency happens. Would you be the bystander who pretends not to see anything, the curious one who stops to watch, or the person who actually springs into action to help? I also really liked how the narrator broke the fourth wall and talked directly to the reader, asking us the most difficult question of all: Who would you save, and who would you let die? And honestly, there are barely any likable characters in this book, except for Mrs. Worthโ€”and Iโ€™m probably biased because I absolutely love this one-hell-of-a-woman! Overall, this was a heart-pounding read! This book follows the story of Lana Lee, who, after returning to her familyโ€™s restaurant, finds herself investigating the suspicious death of the property manager, who was killed by shrimp dumplings despite his known shellfish allergy, before she becomes the killerโ€™s next target. This was a brilliant beginning to the series! Aside from the murder investigation, this story also has strong cultural and family drama. The characters are lovable, the descriptions of the food are mouth-watering, and there is a little bit of everything โ€“ mystery, drama, humor, and romance. I also liked how we get to catch up with what the characters are doing after the investigation. This was a fun read! It has all the elements that I love โ€“ a wartime setting, amateur sleuthing, and an intelligent, no-nonsense FMC. I liked how each character was given enough time in the story for me to get to know them and try to figure out who among them was the culprit. I suspected the culprit early on, and I was right. Haha! I really enjoyed how the mystery unfolded, with just the right amount of humor and light-heartedness without taking away from the seriousness of the situations at hand. My only wish is for more character development for Freddie Fairbank, especially since he seems to be shaping up to be Polly Hopeโ€™s sleuthing partner.
