One of the biggest reasons The Roadmap To Audio exists is because someone took the time to mentor me.

Back when I was trying to figure everything out, I got connected with Matthew Weiss. While he was mixing records for Akon and working at a high level, he still made time to answer questions, give guidance, and show me what was actually possible.

That experience changed the way I looked at growth.

YouTube can teach techniques.
Experience teaches context.

A mentor can help you avoid years of unnecessary mistakes.

The biggest lesson Matt taught me wasn’t just about mixing.

It was the value of having someone who’s already been where you’re trying to go.

I spent months watching YouTube tutorials trying to figure out what a more experienced engineer showed me in a single session.

That’s when I learned:

Information isn’t the same thing as application.

Knowledge is valuable.

Guidance is what turns it into results.

I recorded vocals in between 2 mattresses.

Not in some million dollar studio.
Not with perfect acoustics.
Not with expensive gear.

I was living in the hood, turning a living room into a bedroom and a closet into a booth.

And nobody knew.

I’d send records out and people would ask me what studio I recorded at.
Whole time… it was me figuring it out in survival mode.

That’s why I never let people convince me they “can’t start yet.”

Start ugly.
Start uncomfortable.
Start with what you have.

There’s a moment I live for when teaching audio…

You can literally see somebody trying to figure it all out in real time 😭
Like that Hangover meme with all the math floating around in the air.

Then suddenly… it clicks.
The “aha” moment hits.

And honestly?
That feeling is right up there with finally landing the perfect bar in a verse or getting a mix exactly where I hear it in my head.

I never realized how fulfilling teaching would be until I started doing it.

A lot of the students I’ve worked with are off and running now… and I love being able to help people crack that code. by @theroad2audio
