The Royal Oak Initiative invites you to celebrate National Chess Day with us!

Opening 10/10, Peace by Piece is a mixed-media exhibition exploring chess as more than a game — as a cultural language, a visual vocabulary, a historical artifact, and a space for strategy, identity, creativity, connection, and imagination!

For centuries, chess has moved across borders, generations, and cultures. Its pieces, patterns, players, rituals, and histories have inspired artists, thinkers, designers, activists, and storytellers. Peace by Piece invites artists to consider what chess means to us today — and what it might mean tomorrow.

Curated by our Executive Director: @blacksuneternal

We at ROI see the connection between chess and art as a way to exercise the left and right brain. Critical and creative thought. The gallery started from the mind of a child with Kween’s first art show in 2025 and now with this show we will have had a full year of art programming thanks to @terriseta and @9__________a !

Artwork by @dk1994 Prints will be made available. Stay tuned! by @theroichess

Things are often changing, pieces moving all over the board, the clock ticking on your next move, the leaves starting to fall...
At The Royal Oak Initiative, we are committed to meeting every 2nd and 4th Sunday at our hub "The 4C" because we believe in the value of intergenerational learning and connection! We love to craft a space to ask questions and consider different perspectives! We need your contribution!
Whether you can make it out to 80 Parsons from 3 – 7pm THIS SUNDAY or 3 months from now, we are glad to have you at any level or any experience.

Chess Sundays also just got a little sweeter since our Coach Liaison and team superstar, Coach Honey, is now sharing handcrafted tea blends to pair with our chess games and good conversations! ☕️

Make a donation to our mission via the Zeffy link in our bio and we will see you soon! Let's keep making moves.

Peace! 🌳

If you’ve been to our hub, The Cooperative Cultural Chess Center “The 4C”, you may have noticed these afrocentric chess boards that adorn our space. These wooden, handcrafted, and empowering works of functional art, serve as the perfect intersection between strategy and creativity- qualities we value as leaders. Bold in color and design, we encourage players to remember the legacies that carry them, the necessity of diversity , and the power of resilience.
Would you or someone you know be interested in one of these boards uplifting your home, school, or community space?

Our ROI chessboards are now available for purchase through the link in our bio! 🌳 taken in Columbus, Ohio by @theroichess
