If you’re feeling nervous about coming to The Room, that’s okay. It’s completely natural and most people feel the same.

Walking into something new can feel uncomfortable, especially when it involves moving your body in front of others. But what you see here is exactly what it is.

We arrive as we are.
We warm up together.
We learn the basics slowly.
We laugh when we get it wrong.
We move in ways that feel good for our own bodies.
We cheer each other on.

No one is training to go pro.
No one is expected to be perfect.
Sneakers are welcome. Experience isn’t required.

It’s just one hour to step away from the noise and reconnect with yourself.

The room is ready when you are. 🔳

Big little update for The Room from July onwards.

We’re moving to Thursday nights, tickets will now drop monthly, class passes are available, and song requests - get them in the playlist!

Please read through the slides so you know what’s changing, how tickets will work, and what to do if you can’t make class.

The new schedule and July tickets drop tomorrow at 6.30pm.

Still beginner friendly, sneaker friendly, R18+ and very much about showing up, backing yourself and having a bloody good time.

A little backstory on how The Room came to life.

I’m Fiona, the slightly chaotic, far from perfect teacher behind The Room.

Dance was my whole world growing up. I started at 2 years old with my twin brother and by 10 things got pretty serious when we were accepted into a national ballet associate programme.

At 12 we were accepted into full time professional dance training, which meant boarding school. Academic subjects alongside daily dance training. Dance was simply part of our school timetable.

After graduating I accepted a three year scholarship in London to further my professional dance training. A professional dance career was the path I was on.

But the dance industry is tough and confidence is everything. Mine cracked and at 20 I walked away.

At 22 I moved to New Zealand and dance slowly became something from my past.

Over the years I tried to reconnect with it. I taught a little, dabbled in things like Zumba instruction and went along to the occasional adult class, but nothing really hit the mark.

Often the classes were too beginner for my background and I struggled to find something that felt like the right fit. So I would stop again.

Then during lockdown I had a bit of a realisation. Walking away from dance was probably one of the biggest mistakes I had made.

I remember specifically telling my husband that when we build our dream home, there has to be a dance studio in it.

Now I am almost 40 and dance is back in my life - not just to fill a void for myself but to share with others what dance actually gives you.

Confidence.
Joy.
Connection with your body.

Somewhere along the way we start telling ourselves we are too old, too stiff, too unfit or too self conscious.

If you have ever thought about dancing again, or trying it for the first time, but told yourself you are too old or not good enough, you are not.

We can’t rewind the clock but we can start now.

Screaming banshees or maybe it’s this… ↓

If you’ve been in The Room or any other dance studio with similar values, you know exactly what it feels like.

It’s someone cheering for you when you’re nervous.
Someone hyping you up when you forget the bloody choreography.
A room full of people wanting you to absolutely NAIL it, whether they know you or not.

No competition. No judgement. Just very, VERY loud support.

And honestly, everyone deserves to experience what it feels like to have a room full of people in their corner.
Sometimes, sadly it is strangers that scream the loudest for you.

Choose to be a screaming banshee over a judgemental onlooker - you never know who how much it can mean to someone in a world where people like you see you fail.

Team banshee always! 👏🖤🔲

6 months of showing up, letting go, stepping outside our comfort zones and backing ourselves a little more each week.

Proof that it’s never too late to start something new, find your people and do something purely because it makes you feel GOOD.

“Let’s just keep dancing and having fun..”

Thank you for the best first 6 months. 🖤🔲

Six months of The Room 🔲🖤

When I started The Room, it was simply to fill my own cup and create a space for people who shared the same love of dance… or for those who never got the chance to dance growing up.

One of my biggest hopes was to prove that it’s never too late to start something new. Age doesn’t define us. Confidence isn’t reserved for a certain stage of life. Sometimes all it takes is walking through the door that first time.

To every single person who has come to a class, shared a post, told a friend, cheered us on, or quietly supported from the sidelines… thank you. I see you, and I appreciate you more than you know.

A huge thank you to @lauraevegoodwin , my unofficial but very official 2IC. Thank you for the set ups, listening to every wild idea, being my biggest hype gal, and holding the fort whenever I haven’t been there. The Room wouldn’t be the same without you.

Thank you to @moodiblends for keeping everyone refreshed with your delicious sodas, and @soulboul for helping us spoil our roomies with an awesome voucher.

Here’s to six months of dancing, laughing, backing ourselves and building a community that feels like home.

As the audio says, give yourself the love…

Dance at home.
Not in front of a mirror.
Not to get the steps right.
Not to film yourself for Instagram.

Just put your favourite song on while you’re making dinner, folding washing or cleaning the kitchen and let your body move.

At first it’ll feel awkward. That’s normal.

But the more you do it, the more you stop overthinking every movement and start trusting yourself.

The choreography teaches you the moves.
Freestyling teaches you that there is no right or wrong way to move. And when you bring that freedom back into class, everything changes.

Let go and start allowing yourself to feel, and not just in dance but your emotions and every day decisions. Give yourself the love you give to others 🖤🔲✨

You might not agree but here’s my reason:

I get a lot of DMs asking ‘What’s the song…’ and honestly, sometimes I don’t even know myself until the day of class 🫢

Between work, mum life, and listening to my own body, things shift. Some days I’m sore, some days the vibe changes, and I’ll switch the routine to suit what feels right in the room.

Like last week… I pivoted and changed on the day.
We danced to this song.
Be honest, who actually knew it?
And who still loved every second?

That’s the point.

Dancing to unfamiliar music pushes you in a completely different way. It teaches you to listen, to feel, to connect… not just count steps, but actually move with intention. It enables us to try new styles and grow.

It’s about trusting yourself in the moment.

The Room is your space to switch off from the noise, tune into your body, and move in a way that feels good for you.

So next time the song is a mystery… trust the process. 😜

As always song suggestions welcomed - leave your recommendations in the comments 🫶🖤
