Making a Movie in Australia: Part 4 - Second Week

Back on boats! Day 4 was a lesson in making adjustments on the fly. The location had agreed to let us film at a dock, but apparently a security guard wasn’t informed and forced us to leave. Thankfully, the team was able to secure a second location (the place we shot on Day 1) which for me, the DP, and the 1st AD meant a 10-minute boat ride (perfect for B-roll!). It cost us a lot of shoot time that would have gone to making the movie better, but I’m so glad that security guard made that dock safe from ever having films shoot there again 🙄 Thankfully, the team didn’t flinch. We made the day despite the setback.

The next few days are a blur. Same location for 3 days. What a luxury! That being said, A LOT went wrong. Tech failed. Actor emergency. Threw my back out. Set collapsed (yup!). But we stayed the course. Found some pretty shots. Made a lot of decisions on the fly and tried our best. Hard to not be proud of what happened here these 3 days. Blood. Sweat. Tears. Vomit. Sharks. And the weeks isn’t even over! (Also, I jokingly said “No Ohio State gear on my set!” to an AC on Day 1, and I saw she greeked the logo out this week. Too funny!)

This week ended with a half pool/half boat day (more boats!!!). This was objectively a low spot for me. A lot of things came crashing down all at once and I got a little overwhelmed. We got some great stuff, but it’s hard to keep a positive energy going when I’m being made to feel crushed for things that are ultimately fixable. We got through it, did what we could. Wish we had a full day at the pool, but that just wasn’t in the cards. The actors were great, many trying stunts they had never gotten the chance to before. Alas, we moved to the final boat. Here we filmed some of my favorite shots in the movie. Really set the tone for what’s in store. Fun, funny, dramatic, and (hopefully) traumatic!

Overall, an incredibly stressful week. Most of the movie was shot over these 5 days. Really proud of what the team pushed through in order to make it happen. Some massive problems arose, and nobody missed a step. We pivoted, we adjusted, and we made it happen.

Making a Movie in Australia: Part 3 - First Weekend

Getting a break from a hectic first couple days was very welcome. A lot of intense pages knocked out very quickly.

Split the G for the first time! Saw a shark on the beach (lol).

Then, we were whisked away to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Holy cow. And kangaroo. And koala. What an incredibly run operation that is. Got to see animals I’ve never seen before, which was cool enough, AND I got to pet a koala and a kangaroo! Pretty perfect day for such a huge fan of animals.

A fantastic day to take a breath before the proverbial storm the next week would provide. by @theryanebert

Making a Movie in Australia: Part 2 - Days 1-3.

The first three days of production were 3 of the most ambitious days. Big page counts and bigger action. That, with a cast that had only just gotten the script a couple days before. But, thankfully, the cast and crew were both up for the task.

Day 1 was at a real Water Rescue operation. Lovely people who save lives being interrupted (respectfully) by a film crew. Boats, stunts, water, drama. We had it all. And it couldn’t have gone much better.

Day 2 was our obligatory beach episode… I mean, day. It was also the first day most of the principal cast got to meet. High winds, crazy weather, characters and actors introducing themselves, a complete wash out of the set (a low point at high tide)… but this may have been my favorite day. Beautiful stuff and phenomenal actors.

Day 3 we found ourselves on a roof! Not spoiling anything, but boy was there a lot going on up here. Huge drama and action - and only a day after the cast introducing themselves. It was hot and I got burnt a bit in the sun… but it’s hard not feeling like you’re making a real movie being on a set 30ish stories above the ground with all of Australia below us.

And that was just the first half a week!

More to come… Lots to go! by @theryanebert

Making a movie in Australia; Part 1 - Arrival and Pre-Production.

Was so grateful to not only get the opportunity to direct a movie in another country, but to have my wife along for the ride as well. 14 and a half hour flight, but holy cow what a view from our room! Worth it.

The Australian team greeted us more warmly than their weather, and Anna and I went exploring for a day or two before the real work began. Some time at the beach, dinner with the team, then some location scouting. Also, there was a dog once. A really great start to an extended trip in Australia. by @theryanebert

All real quotes. All from people who have worked at the company for decades. 100s and 100s of movies... but there is something special about this one.

See the movie everyone inside the company is raving about on VOD soon.
