Hana Ku 2026 x @freedivesafehawaii

Earlier this month the FreediveSafe Hawaii team had the honor of being invited to Hana, Maui to work with their tight knit community and rollout our new in-water Aquatic Safety and Rescue Skills program. We worked with local youth and divers of all ages over the weekend and were blessed to stay at @alakukuihana for their annual Hana Ku retreat.

Humbled would be an understatement. Hana is the most remote area in all the main islands shy of Molokai, and the community there has a unity like I’ve never seen before. We were welcomed with the utmost hospitality and were met with nothing but aloha by everyone. It was by far the most special and cultural experience I’ve ever had since moving to Hawaii 10 years ago.

If staying in such a beautiful place wasn’t enough, we got to spend the weekend with the best chefs in all of Hawaii, and ate the best local kine meals I’ve ever been privy to.

Chefs @musubman @chefwonder @mauifreshstreatery @tai_not_ty and many others put on a culinary work of art marathon with a variety of locally sourced ingredients. I never expected to learn so much about Hawaiian culture and cooking this weekend, so had to post the highlights of all the delicacies we feasted on!

Aside from the food and our teaching event, the most special part was being welcomed into the Hana community with nothing but love. I’m so grateful to everyone who brought us into their ohana and I can’t wait to go back!
