The films leave the screen. The conversations continue. 🎬 At our latest HHCC x SIT Monthly Film Screening, we watched Lizard by Akinola Davies Jr., Harmattan by Muyiwa Awosika, and La Chapelle by Jean-Michael Tchissoukou. These clips bring together fragments of the films and reflections from those who experienced them with us. We’re interested in what happens when a story leaves its original context and enters a room full of people with different lives, memories, questions, and ways of seeing. What resonates with one person might unsettle another. What feels familiar to someone might open up an entirely new perspective for someone else. That is the beauty of watching together. Film gives us a way to approach our realities from a different angle. And gathering around it gives us the opportunity to listen, exchange, disagree, and discover what we might not have arrived at alone. At Hearts Heartist Creative Center, we want to keep making room for these encounters - for art that opens conversations, and conversations that stay with us long after we leave the room. A little of what we watched. A little of what we thought. A little of what we carried home. We’d love to hear from you: what makes a film stay with you long after you’ve watched it? #HeartsHeartistCreativeCenter #ScreenInTransit #FilmAndCommunity #CinemaAsReflection #CommunityThroughArt by @thescreenintransit
In the week of the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, @filmlabpalestine is organizing over 2000+ Palestinian film screenings around the world. This global effort is a show of solidarity with Palestine, an act of amplification for censored Palestinian voices, and at a time where the major narratives in the media continue to dehumanize Palestinians, PCD Around the World aims to do the opposite, providing a platform for their voices and their humanity. We are proud to present two Palestinian films for this global event. Return to Haifa (1982, dir. Kassem Hawal, 72 min) On April 21, 1948, the quiet life in the Palestinian city of Haifa turned into something resembling hell, amid mortar shelling, and the people of Haifa were forced to leave their city and thus emigrate from their homeland. A Palestinian family left their child, Khaldoun, and immigrated without being able to reach home to carry him with them on their migration journey, and their obsession with searching for him remains for twenty years. They Do Not Exist (1974, Mustafa Abu Ali, 25 min) Life in the Nabatia refugee camp in southern Lebanon, accompanied in voice-over by a letter written to a fedayeen. A response to Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, who declared that the Palestinian people did not exist. A great classic of Palestinian revolutionary cinema, They Do Not Exist is a must-see film blending a strong political discourse and original cinematographic experiments. With editing that creates a new language, musical sequences criticising a Western colonialist culture, Mustafa Abu Ali, one of the most important filmmakers of the 1960s and 1970s, refutes the provocations of Golda Meir. See you there! A film ends, but the conversation doesn't have to🎬 Through Screen in Transit, film becomes a starting point for conversations, shared perspectives, and connections that go beyond the screen. We sat down with its four curators. Ife, Amanda, Rete and Zainab to talk about community, the cinematic potency and what it actually takes to build a sharper, more critical audience. A film can take us somewhere unfamiliar and somehow bring us closer to home. For this edition of our Monthly Film Screening, in collaboration with Screen In Transit, we gathered around three films: Lizard by Akinola Davies Jr., Harmattan by Muyiwa Awosika, and La Chapelle by Jean-Michael Tchissoukou. Three films. Three worlds. And an invitation to look a little closer at the societies we inhabit, the realities we navigate, and the experiences that shape how we see ourselves and one another. We believe film is more than a story unfolding on a screen. It can be a mirror, a question, a provocation. It can bring overlooked realities into view, challenge what we think we know, and give us a way to approach experiences beyond our own. But something else happens when we watch together. A story becomes a shared experience. Different interpretations meet. Someone notices what another person missed. A conversation begins that might never have happened otherwise. This is part of what we are building at Hearts Heartist Creative Center: a space where creatives, curious minds, and communities can gather around art, exchange perspectives, and make room for the conversations that help us understand our world a little differently. Not just a place to watch films, but a place to think, feel, question, and encounter one another through them. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to Screen In Transit for continuing to build this space for film and community with us. 🎬 What can a film help us see about ourselves that we might otherwise overlook? #HeartsHeartistCreativeCenter #ScreenInTransit #FilmAndCommunity #CinemaAsReflection #CommunityThroughArt by @thescreenintransit

The filmmaker behind our special presentation, Cynthia Is A Fxxking Bitch, is Jenrola Lawore! Jenrola’s entire identity rests on the fact that she’s obsessed with films; watching them, making them and learning about them. Her love for film comes from a desire to express her philosophies to willing parties. ie. she thinks women are amazing and that is sewn into tapestry of every piece of media she puts out. She is a philosopher, she is a filmmaker, she’s an artist but best of all she’s a 21st century woman. Come catch Cynthia Is A Fxxking Bitch tomorrow in Lagos and Abuja! by @thescreenintransit

He works across narrative, fashion and commercials. His short films include Nine and A Day, Harmattan and Seatbelt. He is developing his debut feature. Come see Harmattan on the 24th of October in Lagos and Abuja, and 31st of October in Kaduna. Tickets for Abuja and Kaduna are available on our website. Link is in our bio. by @thescreenintransit
