@melveex ::: MelVee X (she/they) is a Black multidisciplinary artist and CEO of MVX STUDIOS - a hub for creativity and equitable artistic expression based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary, AB).

Their primary means of expression are spoken word poetry, burlesque performance and photography - what they call the MelVee trifecta. It is her vision and guiding principle to create the foundations for those of us who have been silenced to unapologetically tell our own stories from our perspectives.

MelVee has been a professional artist for seven years and has shared their he(ART) across Turtle Island (Canada). Some of their proudest artistic achievements include representing Calgary at the 2017 national slam competition at CFSW (now SpeakNorth), placing 5th in the country, curating and performing in We Gon Be Alright, a Black resistance cabaret at Arts Commons, the third largest performing arts centre in Canada, directing Black Kid Joy, a summer program inspiring and empowering Black youth through the arts and producing Radiant and Radical, a showcase celebrating the soul of Black art in Mohkinstsis.

The struggle is real, unapologetic and joyously resisted. ::::: photo @neopictorialist taken in Mohkinstsis, Treaty 7 Territory by @thescribesnest

The Scribes Nest would like to introduce: @minoltaaraya ::: Minolta Araya is an Eritrean-American artist born in Queens, NY. She recalls her earliest memories are of fireflies, block parties and grandma’s yelling ‘get in before the porch lights come on!’ She began creating very early through acting, dance and journaling— writing everything from short fiction stories and plays to poetry. At just 5 years old she won a scholarship to the Dance Theatre of Harlem and by age 8 she received publication for one of her pieces in children’s poetry anthology— ‘it was some nonesense about America being a Melting Pot’ (the artist).
Minolta moved to Southern Pines, NC as a teenager, where she began playing guitar. The South helped her to connect with nature and “plant roots”. Compelled by the unknown she travelled alone in a converted SUV camper up and down the East Coast of America with an acoustic guitar and small Minolta eventually found her way to Los Angeles, CA competing on America’s Next Top Model and ranking in the Top 20.
Following an underground Hip Hop Show, Minolta met producer Sebastian Pringle of Crystal Fighters. Her raw vocals, meshed well with his dance beats and they soon traveled to London to record multiple tracks. Her latest single “Runaway”was released with an accompanying music video from filmmaker Andrew Dyck and received a range of positive reviews; playing on indie and college radio stations worldwide.

Currently based in Los Angeles, Minolta Araya is writing, acting (SAG AFTRA) and traveling performing spoken word. She has been featured at The Lash Social in Hollywood, Flames V1 by PowrLA, Death Cat (A Punk Rock Show), The Zoo Fundraiser for Alexandria House, The Songwriting School of Los Angeles, Emerge Festival in London, and more. Minolta won first place in the Barcelona “PoENtry Slam” & first place in the International San Jose Poetry Slam held virtually in January 2023. Photo: @neopictorialist by @thescribesnest

@ashleyjjwhite ::: Ashley J.J. White has been writing since she was a little girl. Her first “publication” was a collection of short stories she had printed, laminated, and bound to gift her family as Christmas presents when she was eight.

Though she never stopped writing, she spent her twenties bouncing around at and/or planning and promoting rock concerts. Motherhood and aging bones eventually brought her back to her hometown of Calgary where she now works as Program Coordinator for the Writers’ Guild of Alberta.

She has always been a champion of the arts and a cheerleader of independent art especially; she is only now beginning to recognize the artist in herself.

She begun seriously submitting her creative writing in early 2020 and since has had 8 publications and has 3 forthcoming.

She is currently working on the second draft of her debut novel, Unconventional. @thescribesnest ::: 35mm film @neopictorialist by @thescribesnest
