I’m launching something new.
After 25 years working across environmental journalism, broadcasting, campaigns, COPs, communications, live events and some fairly wild attempts to make sustainability cut through, I’ve decided to put what I know on the table.
It’s called LANDED.
These will be small, live masterclasses for people with work, expertise, ideas and stories worth communicating in search of a breakthrough or looking to get a fresh perspective on media, climate and nature.
And the first one feels particularly timely.
HOW TO MAKE SUSTAINABILITY LAND IN A GODZILLA EL NIÑO
People ask me these questions all the time.
How can I cut through with my story?
Nobody seems interested. Why?
They’ve covered this before. Will they do a follow-up?
Is my story too complex?
Will they actually commission climate?
Is plastics, food or fashion now a side issue?
Could the right ambassador help my story fly?
Do I even need traditional media?
The climate is changing. The politics is changing. The media is changing. The audience is changing. And the old sustainability communications playbook simply won’t do.
So we’re going to shake it all out.

OH I DO LOVE A COVER STORY!
Ask any analogue journo - always a thrill to get a cover. Even in a world where AI is coming for us 🤖

Thank you @TheLondonStandard @suzannahLramsdale for entrusting this one to me.

As ever, enormous thanks to my expert interviewees #DrStephanieHare @turinginstitute #jasonmcewen @davidlagnado who helped me find a way into this monster of a subject. Few of whom seem to be on instagram in any meaningful way! Now that’s telling me something surely?

Out today.

Out, damned fakers!

Second-hand fashion has become one of the great joys of getting dressed: the hunt, the story, the unlikely treasure. And it doesn’t end with September! But the fakers have followed us into the resale wardrobe.

For my latest GREEN GAP for @marieclaireuk, I asked the experts how to outsmart counterfeits: @vinted, @vestiaireco, anti-counterfeiting specialist Alastair Gray at @intaglobal, and the brilliant @christopher.raeburn.

From labels and stitching to provenance, hardware, receipts, repairs and whether the story actually adds up: this is my Second-Hand Survival Guide.

WOW! What a brilliant evening previewing the amazing upcycled collection by @euniceolumide at @londonfashionweek's Future of Fashion event, celebrating Second Hand September. 💚

The collection celebrates the creativity of circular fashion, showcasing how donated clothing and waste materials can be transformed into desirable, individual designs. @trnairapparel

At a time of growing overconsumption, the findings from this year's Oxfam State of Style report are a powerful reminder of the impact of our clothing choices. The report found that producing just a single pair of jeans requires around 16,000 bottles of water. 💧

So, let this be your #SecondHandSeptember reminder to repair what you already have, shop second-hand, look at your wardrobe differently, and get creative with the clothes you own. ♻️

PODCAST TIME! got a commute this week? I’ve reframed and recorded my latest Substack as a podcast. It’s a chunky but bouncy listen on PETA, protest, the power of H&M and the strange place wool now occupies in fashion’s fibre wars.

@voguebusiness tells me in its weekend round robin that wool is accidentally SS27’s biggest talking point. Well I unwrap that ‘accident’ a little more.

I’ll defend PETA’s right to protest. But its call to abolish wool plays straight into fast fashion’s synthetic hands.

Fast Fashion’s Chokehold: PETA, Protest and the War on Wool is now up on The Siegle Has Landed. Listen while you fight the good fight.

This week has been nuts. Culminating (almost) with a last minute step in to chair the q&a of the wonderful film I saw last night. This week I stood with one of the bravest women I know, unwittingly grew a pumpkin (thought I’d sown courgettes). Launched my first LANDED course, did science, tracked El Niño, grappled with the grimness of mainstream fashion and much much more. by @theseagull

🌊 DECODING EL NIÑO FROM SOUTH KENSINGTON

For the Evening Standard’s Science & Technology special, I went looking for how London scientists are decoding the so-called ‘Godzilla’ El Niño brewing thousands of miles away in the Pacific.

That took me beneath leafy South Kensington into Imperial College London’s extraordinary Hydrodynamics Lab: 1.2 million litres of water, two wave basins, six flumes — and the ability to summon a North Sea storm in a basement.

Huge thanks to Dave De Ruyter, the endlessly curious lab manager; Oliver Millar, who conjured up that storm; Dr Yves Plancherel, who unravelled the extraordinary physics of El Niño; and Dr Adam Sykulski, who plotted around 500,000 real Pacific temperature readings especially for my piece.

Further out to sea, Anahita Laverack of Oshen showed me how fleets of tiny robot sailboats could transform ocean observation, while Emma Howard Boyd, who led the London Climate Resilience Review, brought it all home: early warning only matters if cities act on it.

And enormous thanks to Imperial’s Eleanor Green, who opened doors, connected dots and made an ambitious day of science reporting happen.

Oh, and Sir David Attenborough got to the lab before me. With a robotic plesiosaur. Obviously.

My piece is out part of Evening Standard Science & Technology special. Link in bio. 🌊

When I got the gig to go to @FawnBluffprivatelodge of course I thought I’d won some kind of journalistic lottery. I’m outdoorsy and particularly love to kayak plus - come on, not all adverse to sustainability in its most luxurious formats. But friends, I had zero idea. What is being built at Fawn Bluff by the Homalco people and French entrepreneur and serial ethical business creator (he calls these endeavours’bastards’) blew my mind.

So yes, for my latest piece in LUXX, I travelled into Homalco First Nation territory on the coast of British Columbia, where tourism is being used to reconnect people with land, wildlife, culture and Homalco knowledge. But I also found the most future-facing, resilient and healing model I have come across in a long time.

These are some of my own glimpses of the journey, alongside the finished piece. I have held off posting about this magical and rather transformative experience because I wanted the piece to go first. But now expect a deluge. Still to come: @chefbissell & @chefkwin the geniuses using Bute inlet as their larder, bears, sea lions and eagle (no juvenile brown death hawks - that’s an inside joke) and the picnic on a glacier. But for now the story of meeting Chief Darren Blaney and David Tuchbant.

Thank you to everyone who shared their time and knowledge with me. The full piece is in LUXX. And also to the wonderful @lisa.grainger for not being able to go herself and & @annececile @august28studio you Scrabble MINX. And my comrades @adamerace @chriswallace4 by @theseagull

We really do need to talk about the weather. 🌍

From Japan’s new word for “cruelly hot” to the developing “Godzilla” El Niño, what we call weather is increasingly inseparable from our changing climate.

For my latest piece for @service95, I spoke to the brilliant Professor Hayley Fowler about what’s happening, what comes next and why connecting the dots matters.

How do you talk about environmental issues without preaching, oversimplifying or making people feel powerless?

In episode 110 of Talking Rubbish, we are joined by environmental journalist and broadcaster Lucy Siegle to explore what she’s learned from more than 20 years communicating sustainability.

We discuss whether focusing on systemic change was really a mistake, why recycling can be a gateway to much bigger environmental issues, whether our obsession with plastic has gone too far, and why none of us needs to be perfectly green.
